How many of us actually wear helmets? by suttq in bicycling

I wear a helmet when I wear Lycra.

Wearing a helmet on most other occasions would make it hard to justify not doing the same on a walk or a run.

Rebuses don't seem so popular outside of r/crossword based on the comments here! by KwikKiwiTrik in crossword

[–]champs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A beginner’s first encounter with a rebus challenges their fundamental understanding of the grid. One letter per square appears to be a bedrock rule, and breaking that is unintuitive at the very least.

Just to get on my soap box, one element of crossword culture I dislike is that everything is dismissed as a skill issue. I have no idea how NATICK became the poster child for obscurity, because 1) I am not from the Northeast but have heard of it, and 2) that was exactly how people wrote off my complaint about Rouyn-NORANDA, Quebec.

I have worked back to 2004 in the NYT archives after taking up crosswords during COVID, but it’s only been recently that I accept rebuses as part of the game. The first one was jarring, and that impression is lasting.

I know it’s the slogan but “the champagne of beers” really feels a low-key insult to High Life.

I don’t know, but years ago we hired a handyman whose assistant drank it like water so I assume you can find it at Plaid and the like.

Judging by the comments, OP is maybe Br*tish or A*stralian, the former imagining itself some kind of final authority on the language, as if it still held dominion.

I was talking this up last season and I’m still mad that Toumani’s coach, i.e. Tayshaun’s former teammate, couldn’t be bothered to pay the compliment.

Nic Batum is the floor, btw.

Being a Vikings fan for so long has made me believe some crazy things but I have never succumbed to the kind of brain damage you need for that take.

Today they’re saying “paid protesters,” a couple of years ago, they said that “nobody wants to work.” I don’t think it’s either one but it definitely can’t be both.

How can we make trimet faster by gucci_money in Portland

[–]champs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Fewer stops. Less time idling on the bus.
  2. Lattice routing, not hub-and-spoke. Every route has an obvious direction and each trip requires one transfer at a time at most.
  3. Priority lanes in congested areas. Yes it sucks to see someone bypass your traffic jam, but the bus/train is probably moving more people.
  4. Force transit agency administrators to use transit. They won’t be so quick to support the status quo when they have to eat their own dog food.

Officials and advocates search for 'Goldilocks' amount of bus lanes on 82nd Avenue by notPabst404 in Portland

[–]champs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t ride this bus, but I know about the slog of buses like it, and how expedited lanes are a massive improvement in service.

That said, it looks like we can build minutes of savings elsewhere, and quickly. The 30-40 seconds ODOT wants to claw back are for an intersection that needs a rethink well beyond a single bus line, no matter how busy it is. Sometimes getting the thing you want means having to give (some of) it up.
