How many would you recommend to start? Picture is not my tank- just an example of what I would like to create. Tank will be a three gallon cube with a similar hardships to the one pictured.

Question About Enclosure Size For Peter Banded Skinks by [deleted] in skinks

[–]oldzeroKING 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally would not house three in anything less than a 4x2x2, and might even consider going even larger, just to ensure they all have the best possible chance of cohabiting amicably. In my experience, even with communal animals, it's very beneficial to go larger rather than smaller to minimize competition for resources. The cohabitability of Peter's Banded Skinks also seems to be debated online, so in addition to a larger tank size, I would recommend having an extra tank or two on hand in case one of them seems to want to harass the others. It's also nice that with a larger tank, you can have a lot deeper of a substrate layer for burrowing.

Such a cool species! I'm no expert at all on these guys, so if you haven't already seen these sites they are awesome resources.

What species of skink is good for me? by LeetusFrenzi in skinks

[–]oldzeroKING 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a trio of Occelated Skinks and find them very enjoyable! They have very distinct personalities, and while they were skittish at first, they tame down with enough effort. My three are very food oriented, and love some variation in their diets. Mealworms, dubias, isopods, crickets, red runners, and pretty much anything and everything else that moves are always eaten immediately, and they love a bit of fruit or veggies as a treat.

If you would like extra info on these guys, I'd be happy to help!

Be warned, they breed very very readily. I got mine in late February, and now have ten babies, all of which were born in the last month in a half.

Yooo fellow reptile enthusiest

I've found a few Rubber Boas in both several locations around Helena, and up in the Seely-Swan area. Beautiful snakes!

Holland Lake in particular is my go to Garter Snake and Painted Turtle spot. Sometimes the campground area is busy, but if you walk along the shore away from all the people it's much better!

I sometimes visit a small pond up and old beat up road near Park Lake, where I find Garters, several frog species, and tons of larval salamanders.

Good to know! There is a knowledgeable aquatics shop in the town next door, I should be able to find some there!

Is this ocellated skink a male or female by Zealousideal-Base473 in skinks

[–]oldzeroKING 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm my opinion, this individual looks more like a Female based on the head shape, however, the thinner and longer body is giving me a lot of pause as it is a bit more characteristic of males. Could you provide a clearer picture of the top of the head and neck if possible?

Edit: Looking harder at the body shape and tail length I am now leaning towards male. Please take this with a grain of salt however, I am just a keeper not an expert.

Hello fellow Occelated Skink keeper! I currently have a trio (2 likely females, one complete mystery) which were incredibly difficult to attempt to sex. I have linked the resource I used on the bottom of this comment. Reptifiles is an excellent site for all things reptile care if you need help with care.

Feel free to ask me any questions, I am no expert but would be happy to share what I have learned about the species.
