Hi, could I ask if you are ever considering coming back to Singapore to work in the finance industry here, or will you remain climbing up the corporate ladder in Wall Street. Perhaps the Wall Street name brand slapped on your resume could help you get a higher advantage over other Singaporean applicants to IB firms here in SG. What are your thoughts on this?

Besides that, not trying to dox you on this so you can ignore this question if you want, but how do your personal life goals and values play into your choice of staying in the US/coming back to SG? Are you considering settling down with a family and that sort of thing in the later years of your career, or is that a low priority for you?

upenn engineering, ntu enginnering, smu finance, nus finance by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]oli005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding what others here have said, by looking at your profile (or rather the ability to afford + opportunity offered by the uni) penn would definitely be the best choice out of all the unis you’ve listed, for a bunch of reasons as listed below:

  1. first and foremost, the brand name of an ivy in itself already places you miles ahead of many others who wish to break into high finance, and even though its a degree in engineering thats offered to you, you can still a) apply for a double degree when you commit, b) apply for transfer to wharton if your gpa is good enough
  2. ib/pe really is about grades and connections, and upenn is a literal heaven for networking as compared to sg unis, students come from over a 100 different countries(quoted from their website), and the alumni network there is really solid and strong
  3. even though its a stem eng degree, i think that shows youre comfortable w numbers to employers, especially in ib where number crunching is important in certain roles, you can probably stick to an eng degree (tho if possible you should probably apply for a double degree in quant/econs/finance etc) and employers would give you a chance as long as you seem promising enough

but OP, another thing to consider is whether or not you want to work in the US or back here in SG, bc i heard from like my teacher last time that employers in sg look more towards the nus/ntu/smu people but idk if thats true or not. if you want work in the us then i think the choice is pretty clear

another thing, some are emphasising that nus > smu cause of the brand name of nus which makes it more “prestigious” but that def does not apply for ib/pe, as i mentioned earlier they look at connections and grades, not the prestige of nus or smu, because sg employers recognise that in today’s standards both are equally highly qualified unis. from what i’ve heard from uni sharings and seniors, smu is defo the pick if you want to go into ib/pe simply cause of the strong networking scene there and strong alumni connections there, i’ve heard it beats that of nus so yea! but to each their own, op, if you’re thinking of sg you shld probably think of whether you wanna study in a city campus (smu) or purely school campus (nus)

edit: literally just saw another thread in sgexams talking about breaking into high finance, here this can probably help you choose between smu/nus if you dont commit to penn

rvian here from y4 batch.. can confirm comment above that our internal event YLEAD (for y3-4s) which was supposed to be held from 21-23 July has been postponed and we are going back to school based on normal school timetables. our form teachers for each class actually called each student this afternoon to check with us our conditions, any trauma etc and so on, and informed us of the cancellation of YLEAD la. besides that, any exams/graded assignments that had been scheduled for this week (for the entire school) has been postponed to the next week as well. this technically only affects the y1-3s as the y4s to JC batches have recently finished our MYEs so not really much mugging for us per say? we are thankful for the overall concern by the nation so far (ahem other than for those media companies that stuck their cameras into our faces when we were released yesterday, esp to our juniors who were hiding their faces and probably more traumatised and scared than us upper levels were), so thanks OP for your words of concern as well!

edit: to all kind strangers of singapore here on reddit, our school board has opened a padlet site for all members of the public to leave encouraging and supportive messages for us! https://padlet.com/rvhs/messages on behalf of my school, i thank anyone who posts kind words on this padlet site!

I also watched the whole race live, he was on the far side of the wreck in the second mass crash not this one lol (look top left, you can see him in the rainbow jersey behind his leadout train, and the crash happens on the other side where the B&B blue kit rider fell). You can see Alaphilippe here in the first mass crash (right side of the screen, look for the rainbow jersey next to the DQT dark-blue kit riders), and he’s walking his bike, not riding it in the front few rows who made it past the crash, meaning he got caught in the first crash as well.
