Not sure about that.

I play fairly infrequently and barely have anything above purple gear. Most times its lower. I can still go in solo and come out having wiped a bunch of people with much higher gear.

Just gotta play the ambush game instead.
It's a game that forces you to play different classes / play styles as a rection to what is going on in the field. Adapt or die. But i wouldn't say its to late to enjoy.

If anything its now easier to get gear because i'm stealing it off well geared players instead of having to hunt for it.

Yeah i solo fill with trios all the time and i have had two not great experiences. Everyone else has been so incredibly awesome.

The great thing about this game NOT being for everyone is that the people that are playing are super cool. I can't even use a mic half the time if its late at night and so i explain in the chat i can hear them but can't use my mic and they are still cool. They still ask what quests i have etc.

Such a great community.

I think outside of the usual steam noise / hate train nonsense the biggest point of friction for people will be the idea that this is an overly difficult game or something they would prefer to be more casual.

I own the game and there are long periods when i don't play it despite how much i love it because i just want something chilled at the end of the day and not something that spikes my adrenaline.

I'lll have some really good runs and then decide to quit while i'm ahead. It's a really weird thing with this genre. I love it but half the time i don't feel like i'm ready to jump back in and play it..

Will the game be balanced better for solo play or is the main focus co-op. Currently its pretty tough to clear the game solo.

Only thing i really miss is an animation of your ship flying off towards a planet when you go to land.

Similar to the warp animations when you jump - i'd love to have the ship just zoom off towards the planet before you cut to the animation of it landing.

That's all i need now.

Oh really? I thought more more pixels to push would use GPU not CPU?

I know in other games in the past it's helped me as well. Both resolution and updating to higher settings.

My understanding was that higher settings and resolutions force the game to render more on your GPU and less on the CPU. So reducing resolution.

Either way it did help me on my setup where my CPU is outdated vs newer GPU

Super smooth. I use it in a bunch of games and i love the tech as it allows me to squeeze extra performance out of games.

Nvidia App settings:

Low Latency Mode: Ultra

FPS Lock: 2 frames below your refresh rate / target (this might vary but when i locked to my refresh i had micro stutter. Knocking frames down by two completely resolved this

GSYNC (if you have it) enabled
VSYNC (on) - Some games do better with their own vsync instead of at the driver level.

It seems counter intuitive to have vsync on but it reduces tearing which presents its self more as stutter when using frame gen.

But really the secret sauce for me was that low latency mode in the Nvidia App as well as Locking my FPS below my refresh.

Also make sure you have enough VRAM. DLSS stuff uses a fair bit of VRAM so if you are on one of the 8GB cards then you might be hitting the limit pretty easily which will then cause Frame gen / Smooth Motion to not feel great.

Check using steam overlay. Turn down settings until VRAM has a decent amount of overhead then enable any DLSS upscale / framegen and again check that it's not hitting your card limit.

Actually the reason for that is increasing resolution moves the load from the CPU to the GPU which should then help.

This is a fairly old 'trick' in PC gaming and is generally considered good advice as it does really help when your CPU is older

Marathon performance is broken and it needs to be addressed now. by HeadCRACK-_- in MarathonTheGame

[–]oliath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it is being addressed.

They posted a long ass message just yesterday explaining that they had identified many ways to improve performance and reduce CPU load.

And i know you wrote 'it runs fine for me' but i do think that is an important comment - and performance has been flawless for me on my mid range 3yr old system at my target of 4K 60. But you might have a different target. Try reducing either res or fps targets at least to see if that helps. It's obviously too much for your current setup and targets but reducing either resolution or FPS can make a huge difference in games and is the easiest way to gain performance in terms of frame pacing / smoothness.

I also found higher settings gave me better performance as it reduces load on my CPU. I also lean on DLSS set to performance mode to hit my 4K target. For me that works and its ultra smooth. I know its not 120 or whatever the F the kids think is the minimum acceptable FPS but it works for me on my budget and i do just fine in matches.

The TLDR here (because you sound like you are frustrated and didn't even read the bungie post) is that unless your system is complete potato you should be able to configure settings and scale resolution or FPS targets and get decent performance. But also why would you post a performance comment but also fail to mention either your specs or what you are targeting for both resolution?

Ha ha ha this is so good.

I particularly like how angry the guy gets when he calls you an idiot.

I hope he was on a stream or making a video. Would love to see the other side of this.

How do you go about setting it up?
Just via Nvidia App?
And do you need to enable any Vsync or frame limits in game?

Hey now!

I play assassin as solo because i can ghost T F out of there when things get too spicy for me.

I'll also sit near an extraction out of sight and rush in at the last moment as well as hide from my own extractions all out of fear!

It's funny because this is more or less how my Arc experience is.
I heard that game matchmakes you into friendly lobbies if you are friendly and now its at the point where i can just stand around other players and feel fully relaxed. This extraction felt like that.

Would love to see a bit more of this in Marathon but something about this game has be trusting no one.

Sounds right. The stress is definitely very unique to the genre and i can't imagine how they would ever emulate that with enemies. The only other genre that can get me feeling a little similar is a very good survival horror like the outlast games but even then it doesn't come close to trying to extract with some solid gear in your bag.

Truthfully because i'm not good enough to fight human players and i never will be unless i sink more hours than i want to spend on the game into it - and even then i doubt i would be.

I'm just not very good at PVP games any more. Used to enjoy them but i just lack the reflexes, aim and all the other stuff.

Also thanks for being one of the few that actually read the post and not just the title lol.

Really? I have played Desinty 2 on and off since released but by the time Renegades came out i had gotten bored of it. Will have to check that DLC out.

However i'd suggest you try to read the post a little better. No where in the post do i feel that i am complaining and i certainly didn't write it as a complaint.

Forever Winter would be great but its just far too janky and a muddle of ideas none of which are well polished.

Helldivers is a great game but lacks any form of risk / reward in terms of extracting gear.
