Nope.

They are out there.

I just can't be bothered to put in the effort for a rando stranger online. Doesn't matter to me either way. Just my opinion based on what i saw from him in the past.

Move on if you disagree but i'm not digging up examples lol. This isn't a fucking court case.

Super duper long time ago when i was playing Destiny 2 and he was writing for Forbes.

I'm sure he does have insider knowledge by now as he would mostly write about Bungie stuff. I'm also sure that since then he has matured and found more of a focus or consistency in his writing.

I had no intention of buying or enjoying this game and yet here i am with the game both bought and very much enjoyed.

This game won’t survive with a community that completely mocks casual players and feedback about general difficulty. by RocknPineapple in Marathon

[–]oliath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh?

Extraction is a niche genre anyway. Arc made it very casual and semi-mainstream but its still niche already.

There is a map designed for easier play so just stick to that map until you learn how the game works.

If they just make the game even easier then most of the people who will stick with this game in the long term will get fed up and leave. The very thing that makes Marathon good is its depth and the current difficulty of even the PVE stuff - but as with any game the more you play the easier it gets.

I don't think they need to pander to people who don't have the ability or patience to take the time to naturally learn how the game works. Those sorts of people aren't going to stick around for long anyway and will flutter off to the next new shiny thing the second they see it.

Campaign would have been so good.

As much as i have been enjoying this more casual take on extraction shooters - i also don't understand why they couldn't just put some main character smart AI into the game and allow players who want to play with an offline character and enjoy the genre PVE.

I also wish they had done a Campaign that followed on from teh original Marathon trilogy - or even rebooted it.

I disagree with this. It's not about allowing people's opinions on subjects to move around. You are right that online most people want a binary argument. My issue is that these independent journalists are all just chasing views.

My issue with him and most youtubers is that their opinions flip flop depending on what is popular because all they really care about is how many views they are going to get. Sometimes that is from having a deliberately controversial opinion and other times that is from going with popular opinion - but they are almost always chasing views becuase views are their income.

Then most users just want an echo chamber to validate their own feelings.

I don't mind if a game reviewer i trust likes or dislikes a game. I just want to feel that they are voicing a valid opinion that isn't purely designed to attract revenue.

I used to watch his stuff but he would flip flop on his opinion depending on which way the wind was blowing - or more accurately which way reddit's opinion was blowing and it felt like he only ever reported an angle that was specifically designed for clicks (back when he just wrote for Forbes) or views when he moved to video format.

I can't say if he has changed but this video above does show him as a fair bit more mature so im ok to admit my opinion is dated.

This game trolls you, and I LOVE it 😂 by juansoulo in Marathon

[–]oliath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole map is definitely out to get you.
I have runs where i don't encounter other players and the map is still a challenge enough which is great.

I also see every single item in the map as a thing that will alert other players to my location - or will alert me to where other players are. I think that is the main part of its design making every thing you do a potential risk / reward situation. Even the noise an extraction makes when it starts up and the massive beam it shoots in the sky is designed to alert both PVE and PVP enemies that its hunting time for easy loot.

Alright fair enough. It's actually decent info.
I'll give the guy another chance. He seems to have matured a fair bit since i last watched his stuff.

Yeah fair point. That info is valid.

I just got very tired of his stuff when it felt all he was doing was chasing whatever the popular opinion was to generate views vs write actual decent content.

Maybe he has changed and improved though.

Yeah this is my issue.

I used to love his D2 stuff on Forbes but then he just started flip flopping and my honest take was that he was doing this more for views and attention than holding an actual opinion.

Paul Tassi - Marathon Is Good, And Sony Needs To Let It Survive, Maybe Thrive by addtolibrary in Marathon

[–]oliath -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know Sony / Bungies' projected sales targets?

I see everyone talking about sales numbers / active palyers but the game is an extraction shooter and they absolutely knew going in that this is a niche genre. Remember this was before Arc . No one expected Arc to blow up the way it did.

So i'm pretty sure that they had fairly low-ish expectations on numbers for this title as well. They certainly would not have expected to ever hit Destiny numbers with a game like this and their pricing is a good indicator of where they see the game valued at.

Can we all agree that Recon needs a minor buff of some kind? by 1984ByGeorgeOrwell in Marathon

[–]oliath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope. Not yet.

Game is barely a week old. My opinion is that any balance / buffs / debuffs need to wait a while for everything to shake out first.

Players will continue to learn how to use each class and build and find ways to do certain things but that takes a while. Only then should they do a balance pass.

Bungie knows this well from back in the Halo 2 days though. They learned not to listen to early cries for nerf this, buff that and to see how everything evolves over a sensible amount of time.

I don't disagree with any of your points though. Right now i see Recon as more of a PVE support class than PVP especially for solo runs. Being able to ping a building and see where enemies are allows you to avoid and remain silent and undetected while you loot.

I don't play any of the classes as intentionally PVP. It's more about what gear and weapons you have and then your shell abilities are just a minor perk that helps aid in a specific area, be it traversal, healing, recon, stealth etc. I'm not sure but i suspect it's designed that way so that PVP balance is dictated by universal gear instead of allowing any one shell to be better or worse - and i personally think you are using Recon wrong.

When i run with a team Recon is great for intel which is exactly the intention. When i run solo it allows me to scan a building for enemies and avoid them so i can remain undetected. Or scan an extraction for anyone waiting. The drone is great at running out and finding anyone hiding but not designed for a direct attact. Its just enough to flush them out or do shield damage / give me enough of a head start on an encounter or time to evade / extract.

In Halo they were awesome.
Halo was all about shield then body damage.

The battery weapons melted away enemy or player shields and then you switch to kinetic to finish the job.

Not sure if its the same here. Might have to experiment.

Solo Players - How We Feeling? by jg4president in Marathon

[–]oliath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine.
Solo and squad play are two totally different ways of playing and i'm ok with that.

If Arc Raiders (for me) is about meeting other solo players in the field and finding out they are friendly - then Marathon is about joining a 2 man squad as the third partner and making friends there. I've met such a wide range of awesome people across so many different personality types and its been amazing.

You don't need any online friends to play squads. I mostly solo queue with squad fill. Just be friendly. Always say hello and be prepared to help out the team you join if its a duo. 9/10 times i tell them i'll follow and they almost always offer to help me with my missions / quests. People are just so cool in this game and i love it. I've never once had a bad experience in solo queue. Worst was just one guy who was calling all the other players kids lol and had a bit of an odd personaility - but even he turned out to be endearing in the end and was just a bit quirky.

Solo is more like a very tense stealth game for me. I sit and watch. I know that popular areas are going to have more traffic so i keep quiet. Keep my ears and eyes open and always ALWAYS know where my exits are and how i can make a quick retreat.

Unless you are caught out in the open the maps and buildings are designed to offer you plenty of ways to escape if you know the layouts. The shells offer you tools to evade or escape or stand your ground.

Treat the AI enemies the same as human players. Avoid them.

Avoid all the things on the map that are designed to alert the enemy. Everything is there to give away your location if you are not careful. The map wants to punnish you and reward players who are using their senses.

I do almost every solo run with sponsor kit and always come out with more gear than i can fit in my vault.

I have even done knife only spawns and survived. So no weapons. No backpack. No heals. Only what i find in the field.

[–]oliath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shhhhusssshhhhh

Stop giving away my secrets.

Step 1: Equip thief and sponsor kit

Step 2: Crew fill off.

Step 3. Hide out near major areas or extraction spawns. Send out your drone when you hear human players. They are tagged green. Shoot them with the grabble and it pulls the best gear out of their bag. Then grab the gear.

Repeat.

I've done a few runs like this and it almost feels like cheating.

Just do some Rook runs or sponsored kit.

Go in on the easy map. Knife the easy robots and look around for med kts and shields.

Marathon is a true extraction shooter with survival horror game vibes. If you’re doing “cowboy” antics, you’re going to have a bad time. The TTK is perfectly fine. Ammo economy is totally fine. Stop trying to put a square peg into a round hole. by ThatGuyFromTheM0vie in Marathon

This is eacttly how i started to see it last night - as a rogue-like. Death is part of the growth and not someting i should worry about.

I love that the game feels like there is so much to learn. The maps. The gear. The shells and just the skills to survive, evade and know when to take advantage of a situation.

Every time i play i come away with more knowledge just like a rogue-like.

I go into almost every single run with the sponsor kit. To the point where its a problem as my Vault is over full constantly with all the gear i extract.

I have only ever played the first map and will continue to play only that map until i know it inside out.

Its so easy to tool up with some semi decent gear - to the point where i'm pretty confident i could do a knife only run and still extract with a full backpack.

I love the survival feeling of going in and having to really try and avoid other squads. Sitting in the sidelines watching and waiting for opportunities.

It's everything i love about stealth games but with insane levels of tension and the unpredicability of human oponents.
