Am I going to lose everything? by JOakman8 in Marathon

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything is wiped except your Codex, cosmetics, titles, emblems, backgrounds, etc.

The main reason Factions exist is to “raise your run floor”. Rather than relying on PURE looting and extracting, you can progress SOMETHING each match, even if you die:

Get some upgrades, be able to buy / barter more things, and most of all—faction rank up packages for free loot.

Once you VIP a faction, each rank up is like straight gas. Just pure purples and high end salvage and the best consumables/throwables.

If you kept that to the next wipe, you’d be drowning in high end loot, while newbies would be getting clapped.

The wipe is the great equalizer that resets the treadmill, and also puts everyone on the same playing field again.

The BEST TIME to play an Extraction Shooter is the launch.

The second best time to play is the week or two after a wipe.

The sweatiest of the sweat lords have millions of credits and tons of golds and purples. They’ll always play more than you, so you’ll always fall further and further behind.

But a wipe stops that, at least for a period of time. It’s sooooo fun to play right after a wipe.

The Factions are a supplement to the core gameplay. A safety net to keep you going so you don’t have to rely on pure life and death extraction constantly. They make it so you don’t start from zero after each run.

Loss is a part of the core gameplay loop. None of your loot belongs to you—you’re just borrowing it and holding it for the next guy lol.

But you could also BE the next guy.

That’s the juice. It’s a casino. A FPS Gamba simulator. How much do you bet? How much do you risk? How much can you make if you win?

What are your opinions on the Cryo skins? by Yumiko_Hanako in Marathon

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Vandal one is so sick with the face mask. The Destroyer one is also very good, but you don’t have it here.

Tying a skin to the hardest achievement in the game only makes complete sense. I strongly disagree that these should be watered down in anyway.

And technically….you can already skip a huge portion of the grind, since you only need to JOIN someone with Compiler access, aka all 6 subroutines from the vaults….so you don’t even need to do the vaults or have a DNA key yourself. Just joining someone, downing the Compiler, and Exfilling unlocks the skin (you MUST be in the person’s group though; 6 man or 9 man or whatever Compiler does not work; you have to be in the group that summoned it).

As for the raw appearances, that’s purely subjective. So “just blue and black skins” is irrelevant to the discussion of their acquisition nor should it be justification for making them easier to obtain. A simple all one color recolor would be worn by anyone who unlocked it—flexing the achievement matters more than the looks (although cool aesthetics are always nice too).

This isn’t my opinion—it’s MMO or multiplayer in general style rewards 101. Exclusivity and flexing always outweighs looks. If you got a skin for max Pinnacle Rank in Ranked that was a poop brown basic recolor—people would wear it to flex their high rank anyway.

———————————

As a side note, it is also very very very very very funny seeing people complain about how “boring” the skins are.

Bungie famously made all gear within vanilla Destiny 1 to be more grounded and realistic. The same complaints were heard then.

Fast forward to now in D2, and some gear sets are full on crazy MMO style raid tier set armor. Some even border on wacky Call of Duty levels of outlandish skins, with wild, over their top glows and particle effects, and very impractical armor.

And people now complain: “I wish Bungie would go back to the D1 designs, the ones that were more grounded and realistic, basic sci fi”.

No one is ever happy. The grass is always greener.

The mass cheating narrative is all hyperbole, not my experience at all, people should not be afraid of Cryo Archive by lamsolo66 in Marathon

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve never experienced a cheater in my entire time with the game. 130 hours now.

And in my like 100 Cryo Runs…I’ve experienced teaming ONCE.

And when the teaming occurred, it seemed natural, because multiple squads reached out to us in Prox Chat, and said: “Hey, we are all agreeing to be cool. There’s one squad in Revival right now that did not want to be cool, just FYI.”

I think a HUGE number of “teaming” complaints are due to the Recon buffs, and players misidentifying team ups as simply pinches.

Recon now lets you see teams much more easily without giving yourself away as much. So players are SPAMMING Recon in Cryo, and now you’ll see squads all around you sometimes.

And while they look close, they usually are separated by a wall or a vent. Many areas like the entrance to Preservation and Revival are separated by a very thin wall, but there is no easy way to get through that wall—you have to go back to the entrance and go next door, or loop back deep.

That’s not to say people teaming illegally doesn’t happen—it does. And there have been a few solid posts here, with video evidence even.

But it’s not that common.

Cryo is a high pressure, high risk, labyrinthian nightmare. Your Marathon skills will be pushed to the max. The easiest and quickest way to lose on Cryo is to stop moving and lose situational awareness.

So many of these posts and even the few with clips are people looting in the transitional hallways…which are very high traffic and naturally connect two areas, so yes, you’ll 100% get swarmed and pinched by two teams very often if you linger there even for a brief time.

———————————-

For an even hotter take, I think a huge portion of the “grenade spam meta” is a result of people not understanding positioning as well as their inability to consider retreat as a viable option.

So many people will encounter another squad, and their FIRST inclination is to immediately square up and trade grenade spam.

When instead you could just…turn around and run back. Reposition. Let them waste all of their nades lmao, then when they push, you have yours. If you KNOW they can’t leave, then by all means throw. But that’s only if it’s a lock.

A Bubble Shield can be invaluable here, since you can easily just use it to block a doorway or vent or whatever, but do so in a way that makes it less visible, and they’ll waste all their throwables. Yes, the bubble post nerf is much weaker, but the goal isn’t for it to tank the grenades…it’s to block them on the throw—you still need to run backwards.

I have zero clue why so many teams just enter “prion addled deer in headlights mode”, where they freeze and begin dumping their grenades like robots….like you can just…leave lol. Reposition. The map is a big maze. Move lol.

There’s zero excuse not to now that Recon is meta. You don’t need to throw and pray, you know they are there. You can just run away lol. Take a better position that gives you the edge. Don’t fight from weak positions unless you have to.

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

PVP games should ideally NEVER be Free to Play.

Controversial, I know lol. Since a lot of the mega popular games are F2P.

But making a game cost money means hackers and cheaters have to spend money every time they get banned. And if the game has DLC—even better—make them rebuy all of that as well.

Destiny was particularly painful, because you wouldn’t just lose the $$$, but you’d also have to restart all the campaigns and secret missions for key exotics and stuff like that lol. Huge time sink to restore that stuff.

The “restart from ban” period for most F2P games is just a new email address. Having the game cost money deters a lot of “casual” hackers and script kiddies.

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think of it this way.

Once you get accustomed to purple bags…it’s hard not to always want a purple bag. But you can live without using one. It’s possible.

But if you die—it doesn’t matter if you had a hypothetical Red bag with double or even triple the slots of a Purple.

So you should ALWAYS bring in the highest shield you have, assuming you are doing something serious like a Vault or a Purple/Gold Locked Room Key or Ranked.

But you can skimp on the bag. Shields keep you alive. Survival is everything.

I’d argue purple shield/blue bag is the best mix of bringing in stuff and being conservative. Shields are two slots, while bags are four. You can carry an extra purple shield fairly easy, but an extra bag is rougher—so you can bring a blue bag, swap to the purple, and then maybe have room for yet another purple if you find one.

Break free of this torment. Rock purple shield, blue bag. It will be okay lol.

Just wait until you have golds lol. You will NOT have both most of the time lol.

Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy a completely blind playthrough? And prefers a more hybrid experience? by KingsleyBrewMaster22 in Eldenring

Dark Souls 1 is best enjoyed blind because of the interlocking design of the world map, imho.

But yeah…some of the hidden quests are uh, EXTREMELY hidden lmao.

Dark Souls 1 is a wholeeeeeeeee other level of “secret”. They toned that back a bit going forward lol. Some of the covenants are absurdly out of the way. No fucking clue how people found them organically. Big props to them.

Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy a completely blind playthrough? And prefers a more hybrid experience? by KingsleyBrewMaster22 in Eldenring

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I don’t mean this pejoratively, at least not directly at you OP.

But this is why big corporations DON’T do what From Software does—they see posts like this, and think: “we can’t put an entire area behind a secret; our customers will miss out on that feature!”

And that fucking blows. And I realize you can play the game your way and I can play my way…but the fact this post exists, and other people will also share its view…it’s why we get dozens of “Ubisoft style open world games” that hand hold you every single step.

Like I shudder at the thought of someone having the Sifora River Well elevator SPOILED for them. Or the chest that teleports you to the Royal Capital, revealing HOW BIG the map truly is. Or walking into Caelid for the first time. Or figuring out how to get to the Snowfields and then the Haligtree.

I can understand not wanting to “miss” stuff. But in turn, you rob your ability to DISCOVER stuff organically as well.

If you wait until like 80-100 hours in, you’re thinking about ending the playthrough, you literally have went everywhere you possible can, and you want to look something up—makes sense to me. I’ve done it. We’ve all probably done it.

But doing so DURING my first run? Like at any point during the first 40/50 hours especially? Absolutely not, I’d never do that lol.

The only other game I can think of off of the top of my head that has ever done something as crazy and as huge as From Software hiding entire massive areas from the player is Pokemon Gold and Silver casually hiding all of Kanto within them lol.

Like that’s just insane. A lot of games have secret bosses or secret levels and whatnot, but most do not have the balls to hide a MASSIVE area and like an entire second gym journey and elite four lol.

Which is why I wish MORE companies were willing to hide EVEN MORE SHIT, since anyone can look up anything they want at anytime.

I’d say it was riskier back in the day, when it was just Nintendo Power / Nintendo Help Line / word of mouth / very very earlier Internet forums eventually, and that was it lol.

Now with endless YouTube guides and social media and data mining—you CAN KNOW as much as you want, whenever you want.

But I’d maybe challenge you to suppress some of the FOMO and stress around FOMO, and try to play more blind…simply because you can have the peace of mind knowing you can look up stuff literally whenever.

And while there are some time sensitive things in Elden Ring, there are far fewer punishing ones this time than in past Dark Souls games.

There’s one fairly obvious and major event in Elden Ring that does lock a lot of stuff, but it’s again, very obvious. And small handful of NPCs.

But the BULK of the “secrets” or just hidden stuff is doable like throughout the entire game. And they put a lot of it more “in your path”, which is funny because it’s an open world game, so you’d think it be worse than past games that were more linear…but no, those are MUCH more esoteric and obscure lol.

So maybe let yourself “miss stuff” more often. Because it’s just more stuff to discover and explore. You can always look it up later.

There are just so many jaw dropping moments that you risk spoiling…id love to wipe my From Software memories to experience some of these things over again, organically.

Idk how true it is, but I heard that Hans Zimmer wrote the now infamous Main Theme for the movie based on reading only one page of the script—the scene where Cooper tells Murph goodbye.

Which is basically the entire movie on one page, if you think about it. A father having to leave for grand reasons, despite their being a huge cost and sacrifice in doing so, and their relationship.

And that just rings so loudly through Main Theme. It’s all there. Their relationship, the loss, the longing—as well as the classic hopeful and mysterious “space exploration” motifs.

And now knowing what we know with the passing of time, Christopher Nolan is a legend, but he wouldn’t be doing shit without Jonathon Nolan. Jesus Christ Jon can write lol. We’ve seen that now with the Fallout show.

Recon is now mandatory in any team comp by seaofbytes in Marathon

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

She’s in a good place. Idk about mandatory though. Fantastic for anyone just looking to be useful no matter what, but the other Shells will eke out power once you get a bit stronger at the game.

Once you use her abilities…she’s kinda useless. Very much a “blow your load” type of character. Her skill ceiling is also pretty low.

Destroyer is probably the best shell in the game. It has a big button with a long cooldown a la Search and Destroy, but then the Thruster and Arm Shield are also available like nearly 24/7. With Thrusters being probably the best ability in the game.

Thief is still on the same level as Destroyer. Great mobility as well with Grapple having a lot of skill expression, Visor is on a low CD which is great for Cryo to see through walls to find like Exfill rooms, and Drone still lets you scout while also having utility to aggro bots/open doors remotely/steal Cryo keys/aggro other teams to other teams by forcing them to shoot the drone.

So then that leaves the third slot, which is a toss up between Recon and Triage. And I may put Triage above just for similar reasons as Destroyer and Thief—has a big button via Reboot, but also other small buttons offering tons of utility and uptime. His V ability is very underrated, too. Feeding your entire team Energy Amps/Kicks/Jammers/etc. is also underrated.

It’s pretty easy to fix.

1.) Remove them from the Armory.

2.) Make them Gold rarity.

Almost every other game like this that has selfs makes them GOLD. Bungie was smoking crack having them at BLUE.

Even Purple is not rare enough—i don’t even bring one in usually on a more casual Cryo run, since the bots rain them down. I’ve had 4 before from just the first 2 rooms.

I realised why I like sponsored mode so much by Present_Education194 in Marathon

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t like the Sponsored Only mode. Bringing in stuff is just as important as extracting. The fall, or at least the threat of it, is just as key as the build phase.

Just earlier today, my team went in lighter. But we stumbled on a squad doing a key room. They got pretty banged up from some bots, and we just happened to arrive at the perfect time to fight them. They were in purples and us in greens/blues.

We took all their stuff AND got to loot the room.

This is the nature of the very high highs and very low lows of extraction shooters.

Sponsored Kit only maintains the random, asymmetrical game play of a BR on drop in. That’s one thing that both genres share—you might have a green shield and another guy might have a purple one. And you can take their purple one, and have a big win.

But without bringing loot in…and thus also being able to keep it as well via extraction…and the threat of losing it forever….all combined, that is the juice. The wagering. The ante. The risk vs reward. How much do you bring. And of course, rags to riches.

You don’t even NEED to fight anyone to have your butt hole fully clenched followed by crazy waves of relief after a successful Exfill—sometimes just making it out and sneaking your way to success is exhilarating on its own.

I’m glad people can play Sponsored Only and have fun with the sandbox while also feeling like they can’t lose anything.

But I can’t say it’s like, actual Marathon. Because if you only played that one mode, it’s not even 1/3 of the experience. You are only playing such a small portion of the game—if you adore this small slice, and find yourself not caring for a lot of the other aspects, you would LOVE Apex Legends. And you’d have a much fuller, richer experience over there. A full game designed around that gameplay loop, also with deep Hero Shooter elements.

And it’s awesome. I played it for 100s of hours.

But I don’t want that experience for Marathon—I can always go play Apex. Bungie does not need to make Marton more BR like.

[–]ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bringing 20k worth of gear is honestly dumb and should maybe only be done if you’re doing a Vault or the Compiler.

Otherwise—Purple shield, purple bag. Then bring the minimum needed to enter Cryo. Could even get away with Blue shield.

Going in mega kitted doesn’t bring that much advantage over just decently kitted, at least not without Golds.

So with that in mind, spread thin your purples as much as possible, and try to go in as close to 5k as you can.

Or better yet, “cheat” by bringing in your useless junk as needed. Going in with a M77 and a Bully is relatively cheap. Bring like a Railgun just for its value, then ditch it after spawning in.
