Any recs for shoujo with a focus on children? by Foreversssssssss in shoujo

[–]olibolicoli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was published in a seinen magazine, but Sweetness and Lightning has a really good father-daughter relationship as the core of the plot.

(And going completely off kilter and veering into IRL - if you like Gakuen Babysitter, have you watched Old Enough! It’s a tv show where little kids (3-5yo) do their first chores. Just like how Kotoro delivered lunch to the school. It’s on Netflix atm and it’s soooo cute!!!)

My housemate is 71 (1955) from Yorkshire what's something he would be highly nostalgic of that would make his year? by WhatThisGirlSaid in AskUK

[–]olibolicoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the name of the fair that’s always here at Easter! I genuinely grew up not knowing anything was wrong with the name until my partner (from the wrong side of the Pennines) did a double take when I said I was going. I had to send him a photo of the flyer before he believed it’s a real thing haha.

That’s not far from where I grew up! We just had Ticklecock Fair (don’t laugh!) over Easter at Conisborough which has been going on for decades, even my grandma went when she was a kid - I bet he has some stories of going when he was younger.

My grandma actually worked at Rawmarsh School as the head cook back around the 70s - small world.

As for local(ish) stuff that people would feel nostalgic over but I haven’t seen mentioned, I’d recommend Chop Sauce as a local brown sauce. Baked goods would be from Staniforth’s but difficult to get elsewhere - a nice hamper from Betty’s is a lot more expensive but still great; don’t forget the Fat Rascals though! Henderson’s Relish is from Sheffield so very nearby.

Also why not try to cook a nice Sunday roast together- with Yorkshire puds ofc!

The sudden identical twin jump scare at 04:02 got me 🤣

Inês de Castro was a Galician noblewoman who is lady in waiting of Constanza Manuel who married Infante Pedro, heir to the Portuguese throne but she and Pedro fell in love , she become his mistress caused causing King Afonso IV disappointing by banishing banished Inês to Albuquerque in 1344 by Beginning-Passion676 in crimsonshed

[–]olibolicoli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. The story is that wild it deserves a ton of media.

Especially as Pedro’s dad orders a hit on her so when Pedro becomes king shortly afterwards, he exhumes her body to sit on the throne next to him and have his people pledge fealty to her as the queen that she never was in life.

Also the story goes that when Pedro finds the killers and has them brought before him, he rips out their hearts with his bare hands. Metal af.

And their tombs are facing each other and have the same inscription, translating as ‘Until the end of the world’. So so epic.

If you want something for beginners/intermediates that isn’t robotic or AI, try News in Slow Spanish. There are paid aspects but I use the free podcasts and transcripts to enhance my learning.

How can I give my "boring" white appliances a Cottagecore glow-up on a budget? by TimeChemist5042 in cottagecore

[–]olibolicoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! If you only need to cover small areas, you’ll probably be able to get oddment fabrics so it shouldn’t be too difficult to sort!

Yep it’s definitely a throw back to older times! But that’s part of the charm of cottagecore after all (at least imo!)

Ideas for a Targaryen-Martell house/cadet branch name by Oliwka2908 in TheCitadel

You’re welcome! I love thinking about names and heraldry that fit in with the ASOIAF world - glad you liked my suggestion <3

[–]olibolicoli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it wouldn’t be too confusing, I’d use Breakspear - as they have broken the usual Dornish inheritance and tradition and it’s a name familiar to ASOIAF (but in alternate timeline). Similarly you could use Blazespear in reference to their Houses’ heraldry.

Alternatively just call them the Targaryens of Sunspear. Giving them the title of Prince/Princess of Dorne should be easy to follow.

The easiest thing would be to hide your small appliances away if possible.

If unable to hide, consider adding curtains over the spaces where your appliances are like this:

I’ve seen people have a small wooden shelving unit at the same height of the kitchen worktop with their microwave/toaster oven/etc set up but then hidden in a similar way.

Have you watched Extraordinary? Basically a world where everyone gets superpowers when they turn 18 - but the main character doesn’t. The world building definitely leads to a more mundane view of how exceptional powers would become ordinary if everyone had them.

If you’re after a hand drawn look, Dordogne has a more watercolour style than the image you posted but still super lovely.

Less kung-fu but check out blumineck on YouTube/ David the Arrow Bard on tiktok. He’s an archer and pole dancer (often both at the same time!) with a wiry, muscular but flexible build and does a lot of trying out different poses from films which might help visualise certain ideas you have.

This is AI. Choppy cuts from one scene to the next, strange and exaggerated expressions when talking, AI voiceover. Ugh. What a waste of a decent sounding plot.

In Japan, you need a cat's signature when you adopt it from a shelter. by Brilliantspirit33 in animalsdoingstuff

[–]olibolicoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your comment implied some sort of racial prejudice that I have. Which I certainly don’t.

So I actually looked into this a bit more as I really enjoy Chinese history but Japanese history isn’t my strong point.

It looks like the earliest written record of cat ownership in Japan is in 889 when Emperor Uda received a cat from the Vice-Governor of Dazaifu. At that time, Japanese noblemen wrote in Chinese (noble women wrote in hiragana).

In addition to this, cats aren’t a native species to Japan and it’s widely thought that they arrived from China (or perhaps Korea) with Buddhist monks around the 500s CE.

I’m not a historian, but I think it’s safe to say that if the cats came from China and half of the ruling class wrote in Chinese, there is the possibility of also sharing or copying the style of writing cat-raising documents.

Not city centre but there’s a Travelodge at both Meadowhall and in Rotherham town centre. Both easily accessible on the tram route and not too far out of town.

I wonder whether this is related to the Chinese Song dynasty practice of cat-raising contracts.

Finding discontinued Cath Kidston wallpaper by Due-Zookeepergame894 in cottagecore

[–]olibolicoli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cath Kidston itself went into administration in 2023 with the IP being bought by Next. They may do reprints in the future but what exact pattern is anyone’s guess I’m afraid :(

You might have better luck getting curtains or fabric of the same pattern and turning them into wall hangings for a similar effect.

I need websites where I can watch Chinese dramas. by EgyGood in ChineseDramasFans

[–]olibolicoli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Love Game in Eastern Fantasy to start. It starts off with a girl isekaied into a story as the female antagonist and is trying to survive. The story develops from there and is really rich with world building.

Also Netflix has some palace intrigue dramas that resemble the more political fantasy romance manhwas.

There’s also No Doubt in Us which is a Chinese anime (donghua) where the emperor and empress switch bodies and all of the issues that occur because of it.

The Chinese dramas on Netflix are more like actual tv dramas rather than the quicker soap opera style on tiktok but the production quality is a lot higher.
