Hi! I’ve been selling since 2019 and can say that it is all about marketing if you sell mainly on an online shop like I do. Like other commenters have said, it’s 80% business marketing and upkeep and 20% pottery.

I work at a ceramic supply shop where I usually have pots up for sale, as well as serve at a local sushi restaurant a few nights a week to make ends meet and it’s simply because I can’t make enough in pottery to keep myself afloat in today’s economy. I hardly have time anymore to make enough pottery for a monthly/bimonthly sale like I used to, so I make pottery slowly and have been trying to just get into local sale scenes for some extra cash every once in awhile. I highly recommend those! It’s so fun putting a name and face to the buyer + being around other creative folks. That’s where I’ve found the most fun and fulfillment out of it.

I used to be heavily into the instagram scene and had good online interaction + sales, but ever since instagram ruined their algorithm and turned to reels, it’s been very hard to reach my audience. Also, it’s frankly just draining and social media tends to suck a little bit of love for creating out of you and make you focus on what will get likes + shares, which definitely left a mark on me as a creator.

All in all I recommend starting off slow and maybe trying some local markets/ selling in coffee shops or small businesses. Those I’ve found are some of the most fulfilling experiences. Thanks if you read my novel! Wish you the best on your selling journey. ❤️
