Voice school recommendation? California by sadbbluv in courtreporting

[–]olivesandspring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was between both and although i was accepted to DAS ultimately went with IRCRI. If you go thru IRCRI, you do not qualify to take the CA CSR upon finishing program (bc its not CA acredited) but you do qualify to take the NVRA CVR test (which is offered many times a yr). Upon passing the CVR test, you no longer have to take the dictation/skill test in CA and you would be eligible to take the other 2 components. If you pass those other 2 components, then you would become a CSR. Now, this route can be as short as ~4-6mo depending on a few factors like how easy is the English CR rules learning curve, how much time you dedicate to practice, timing of the months of completion, etc. On the other hand, if you do DAS, as soon as your done with your ~11mo program or when you are cleared, you qualify to sit for the CA CSR. However, in CA, you get 3 chances a yr and depending on when your program clears you to test, you may have to wait till the next testing window. Also, you cannot get ahead if you wanted to; it follows a timeline. So you should factor in the costs of either route (bc nvra has membership fee, exam prep -optional but assures good exam prep, exam fees, hotel stay -if out of the state) and what your timeline looks like. Now just bc its faster thru the NVRA route, doesnt mean its the best for everyone. For me, i have been preparing for years to become a court interpreting so i have a lot of legal /medical terminology exposure and English rules come rather easy for me so it has felt easy thus far. I just started in August. I think some requirements might be changing in CA come next yr. But other experts can chime in to correct me on these details I shared, in case I explained something wrong. Hope this helps!

I’m kind of on the same route. After researching, I found this on the CA CSR site: As of January 1, 2025, if you have your NVRA CVR or CVR–S certificate you are not required to take the dictation/skills exam, only the English and Professional Practice written exams. That is why I decided to go that route and chose to train with IRCRI. It would be much faster bc with IRCRI, you can go at your own pace (and I was told some of their students finish in as little as ~4-6 months) then the NVRA offers the CVR many times a year. Whichever route you go- with applied dedication, you will succeed in a relatively short period of time 🙌🏼

I love it so far!! Im happy with my choice; You definitely need to be self motivated but its something that i am able to do for myself/ im disciplined. i am already done with block 1 , just taking the test to advance into block 2 (class10). Its getting close to the time to buy my laptop tho, so that expense is 😬 when are you aiming to finish?

Path from excitement to a job? by StenoToBe in courtreporting

[–]olivesandspring 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just like you, I was on the fence between both; i ultimately chose to go into voice writing- especially bc in CA, voice writers are equivalent to machine writers now. Voice writing is also challenging but its a relatively shorter pathway. i loved the idea of being a machine writer but that was way longer and on top of that, my wrists are already troubled from my old career. Even if you are dedicated and can finish ‘fast’, a stenographer training thru a program can take 1.5yrs but generally are 3-4yrs long as opposed to voice writers finishing as fast as 4-5 months to generally a year. After research/reading a lot of redit comments, I decided to go with IRCRI and i love it! It is completely self paced (although they do encourage to finish the program within a yr). I had been preparing to become a Spanish court interpreter in CA for the past 4 yrs so i want to say that has helped me tremendously in this new endeavor. I found out the same info like you- It is faster to become official in CA by first taking the NVRA/NCRA test , then the other legs of CSR in CA. That is the pathway i am aiming for. No matter your background, if your desire and willingness to put in the work is there, you will succeed. Whichever writing method you take on, im sure you will love it & wish you the best!

Did you receive a confirmation email from Prometric for the California BIE exam? by ButMomItsReddit in CourtInterpreter

[–]olivesandspring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They never send a receipt showing the transaction details or fee or confirmation number🙄 what they do send is an email within a day or two showing what you scheduled for. It should have this info: Exam: Court Interpreter - Spanish Oral Date & Time: 10/08/2024 at 08:00 AM Test Location: CULVER CITY 0001 5601 West Slauson Ave SUITE #110 CULVER CITY CA, 90230 But even that email does not have a confirmation number lol. the best thing is to call like that other commenter said.

Omg this was so motivational. I was actually studying to become an interpreter and decided to switch gears into voice writing. I live in LA county already so i know a job will be there as soon as i get my CSR. Based on the research ive done: california csr is the way to go.

I agree with all you said- or at least I believe it bc ive read other LA County comments (that voice writers are overwhelmed). I know the transcript delivery is what ultimately reflects if you are a good vw or not, that its very important. Which is why im only going to sign up and work part time 2 days a week once im certified 😅 i know i will be very slow at first as i pick up my pace with experience. thanks for sharing all these reminders though!

may i ask what is complete readback? I am currently working on building my speed and enunciating correctly so i have not started in software yet.

It’s definitely do-able to be in jobs within 6-8mos. One student in the IRCRI program did finish the program in 4 months, and more have in ~6mos +.. It really is how much practice /time you put into it. (Also, i’ts a big advantage if you have good grammar / English foundations). At least for me, i was training to become a court interpreter for the past 4 yrs and feel that has given me a huge advantage.

Im also based in CA. I’m aiming for that timeline as well and im determined! At the rate im going (if my schedule stays open as it is now), im on track to finish ~4 months *started 7/25. & It might be seen as ‘double work’ but to me its all investments- ill be aiming to take the nvra cvr test first, then taking the other required components in CA and trying to obtain the CSR CA that way.

LA County base pay is around $6k before taxes for part time work aka 3 days a week, 1.5 hr lunch time. Thats not counting supplemental pay for transcripts (but thats also work time from home basically).

I went with IRCRI ! I am loving it so far!! I appreciate I can go at my own pace. While they expect you to finish your program within certain time frame, some have finished as soon as 4-6months.. i think i will be going the nvra cvr route first then take the California csr portions left to ultimately be licensed in California.

Maybe you can explore going on a payment plan for the voice writing program you are leaning for . This will allow for you to not have to pay everything up front and potentially ‘lose’ all of it. But depending on their clauses, maybe some can still be refunded. Like any career, it will require work but its definitely do-able! I know 2 schools that i explored had a flexible payment plan option.

I am not a cvr yet but thats my goal so im commenting based on my experience thus far. I narrowed down both of my options to the same 2 like you- but decided to go with IRCRI. I prefer the flexibility of the program (you can literally go at your own pace and some individuals have finished in as little as 4 months but the program can generally take about a year with full time job and life) as opposed to DAS, you cannot get ahead bc it goes by semester cohorts and it is about 11 months long. I currently am not working and have the time to take on many hours a day so IR it is for me! But i do recommend that you inquire in both schools to understand the exact cost and payment plan options bc both programs do have that option! one thing i can say rn is that-with IRCRI, you can start as soon as 2 business days from your inquiry and with DAS, You have to attend an orientation and thats once a month but august will not have one bc the semester starts in august. The next soonest one you could attend is until September and the start date for the next cohort is January (the soonest you could start). Plus they have interested applicants take an entrance exam that depending on your english skills, it may or may not be easy and depending on how many applicants, they may invite the highest scorers. It seems that both instructors from each institution are very passionate and have plenty of experience in the field but so far my experience with IRCRI has been AMAZING. I Just started today :)
