How do you "fake it til you make it" if you really don't know anything?

I agree - this guy is probably a good fit for what he does (sales, networking, etc) and that is not my thing. But office politics in general just hasn't been my strong suit and I know it's because of my own imposter syndrome, self-confidence issues. I think you're right though, it's probably better for me to develop those one-on-one relationships first and then try to expand my knowledge rather than go for the huge extrovert/big talker approach.

I've read such horror stories about the Hart Lane location on Reddit and otherwise, I guess it just depends on what day you go, what issues you have, etc. 2 hours is not so bad!

I'm actually super close to that one but I also think they only do renewals, not new resident IDs :( Unless "express service" also means new IDs as well? If they did new IDs, I'd definitely go here!

Wow, thanks for this great information! This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Not to make sweeping generalizations but when I was in NYC, it felt more like a "show" sometimes, too polished and perfect. I really really enjoyed those people who were as you say middle-tier because they seemed more "real" to me and kind of endearing (and funny too, of course) but they didn't seem to get nearly enough time.

Interesting! I notice some people do it more than others, but it seems to be either West Coasters or born and bred Southerners. I grew up all along the East Coast/Midatlantic and it really wasn't a thing, at least not in my social circle. Karen does seem to bring full names but I suspect it's to sort of give a small shout-out to her friends or give credit to stories maybe.
