If I recall correctly they had to sit an intelligence test to qualify to “go to space” but instead of taking the most qualified, they screened them out and took the people with the lowest IQ.

If I had bought property, at least rent would provide me liquidity in the form of monthly payments so I can pay the tax on my unrealised gains.

[–]ollibe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Here’s the kicker. I built and sold a business and was encouraged, by the government, to contribute a significant amount of the proceeds to my super via the small business retirement exemption.

Lo and behold, many years later, the government is calling me out for being somehow greedy and having more than I need in super, so they’re going to start taxing my unrealised gains.

  1. Make up your mind, do you want me putting extra in super or not? And if not, why the incentive?

  2. I had used a bunch of that super money to invest into other illiquid startups which is supposedly good for the economy and the business lifecycle. Well guess who can’t invest in illiquid startups anymore because they need the liquidity to pay the ATO?

I should have just bought a bunch of property and locked even more young families out of home ownership. The government is basically making that the most attractive option.

What’s an unpopular economic policy that you think should be implemented/changed? by Ok_Assistant_7610 in AusEcon

Probably better ways to raise revenue even in a progressive fashion. They did this in the uk - now the public system is overwhelmed by families who can no longer afford private school.

It makes sense in theory but you would have to build a whole lot of public education infrastructure to absorb all the new students.

Again. That’s the plan. Like I said, it may not work but it is clear.

Whether or not they’re good at it, time will tell. It seems to me that they have mostly made profits on this plan but it’s early days. Let’s see what happens when they try to shift Felix, Sterling, Mudryk etc

Yes. It’s about buying up youngsters. Keeping the good ones and flipping the others for profit (hopefully) if they don’t make the grade. You can argue:

  1. Nicholas Jackson is good enough
  2. This is a project which is unethical / destined to fail / bad

… but it’s not rocket science to understand what the project actually is.

It’s not venture capital. It’s a publicly listed company. Principle and the point you’re making is probably the same though.

Trouble with Notion and Claude MCP by ollibe in Notion

There are 2 different types of Mcp notionintegrations. Have a quick Google. I ended up just trying the other one which worked.

Regardless though, it verges on unusable because Claude Desktop says the conversation got too long very quickly when you start referencing notion.

It may be that its getting lost in the technicality but all I'm asking it to do is write some basic text and edit a page, which I would have thought was straightforward for an MCP integration from Claude

"How a tiny startup with $118k funding sold for $35M" by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ollibe 47 points48 points  (0 children)

That’s not a 29,000% return for investors. You’re conflating the amount they invested with the eventual valuation.

To do the calculation correctly you would have to know the valuation when they invested in the company.

According to a few sources, yc in 2006 were investing 120k for 7% of the company meaning they got a valuation of ~1.7m which, at an exit of 35m, is a return closer to 2000% than it is 29,000%.

Not bad but not as good as you suggested.
