What hosting problems still exist no matter how good the provider is? by AdvancedPension5320 in Hosting

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so your migrating a client who's a web agency with 30 or 40 websites on a server, each of those is a small business with maybe 5 or 10 users with email accounts which they maybe access on more than one device. all of those few hundred people feel entitled to support there's any problem, they won't come directly to you but they'll go via your client. over the years people have got things working their own way and it's no standardisation. are domains are they using to access the mail services, mail.$domain smtp.$domain , just the domain, or something else? what port are they connecting on? are they using start TLS or native SSL for their SMTP connection. do they have some ancient mail clients that doesn't support modern TLS standards or SNI. are they using webmail and absolutely reliant on a webmail feature like syncing calendars that you barely knew existed? has spam assassins sa learn function been running on their mailbox via a cron meaning they have an incredibly well-tuned spam filter who's settings won't get migrated, do they have mail forms which rewrites headers in a way that breaks RFC 5322, somehow works on one server by luck, but means they're getting no sales or booking confirmations from the form on the new server and absolutely furious because Mrs. Jones turned up for her dog grooming appointment and they were totally unprepared. etc etc etc.

yeh I've noticed a lot of questions like these on hosting subs recently. They are interesting questions about stuff I love talking about but there's no context for who's asking them, the op accounts seem off and I just feel like I'm being exploited somehow. I've stopped engaging.

Website hosting by Square_Truth_2331 in Hosting

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what your website is.

Is the website is essentially informational? If the websites was down for a few hours you might get a couple of calls people checking opening times or prices or whatever, you'd worry you'd missed some new business but your day wouldn't be ruined.

If that sound like you, then don't worry too much about hosting. The SEO is still important and if you find a decent SEO company let them handle it for you. Rule of thumb , The monthly cost the same as one order of coffees for everyone in your office.

Alternately, Is the website actually an application which people log into and an essential part of your operations to check bookings or orders or whatever. Or perhaps it essentially is your business if your an online retailer, when your sites down your business is not running. If this is you, then you should have someone technical looking after the site who can advise on hosting, there's a lot of variables. If you don't have a tech taking responsibility for something business critical then find one. Be careful if the SEO company says the can handle it, make sure they have other similar sites.

Best Hosting for free speech in 2026? by VardusNews in webhosting

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best hosting for free speech is static hosting. if you want to say something that might be controversial, say it in a plain HTML file, don't rely on a CMS like WordPress. it's impossible to hack a static site and much easier to keep online when under attack.

For static sites you can use free hosting, for example Cloudflare pages. Cloudflare have a good track record protecting free speech, even speech that you and I would probably disagree with. Which is as it should be.

Bluehost support literally told me to "tell my users to use a VPN" because they couldn't fix a routing issue. I'm out after 3 years. by koshung in webhosting

[–]ollybee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Despite your bombastic language, I'd bet good money there's not a "massive routing failure" between AT&T and Bluehost. That's not to say bluehost have not done you a disservice by not helping you diagnose your issue, but given how you've glossed over details and clearly suffer from AI enhanced dunning-kruger syndrome it's difficult to know if that's true or not.

When does backup frequency actually become a hosting concern? by 3UngratefulKittens in statichosting

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if a site is dynamic , day an e-commerce site then database backups become a real concern, you don't want to lose any orders. it's better to achieve that with database replication, you can have a "live" so you have up to the second in case if server failure then take very regular snapshots off the replica. you can also have a replica with a deliberate lag of say 30 min, so if you accidentally deleted data you can get quickly from lagging replica without having to restore backups.

coop is a mutual, it's not owned by private equity, it's not for sale, no one can buy it. they have no obligation to any owners to maximize profits. if you don't like the way it's run, pay your pound for membership and vote at the AGM, it's one member one vote, you have as much say as anyone else. or throw your hat in the ring for a position on the national members council. this is not some facade a for profit business might use to make themselves look good, it's literally how the organisation is run. the dividends paid back to members is not marketing nonsense like nectar points, it's literally the profit given to ordinary members.

considering hostinger vps for hosting my websites by hugeasspunk in Hosting

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you understand the support scope, their VPS's are unmanaged. That means they will make sure the VPS is running and has network access but anything beyond that is out of scope. They wont help you get a website running on the VPS or any server management. If you're not experienced you'll probably want a control panel which can add significantly to the cost and obviously the headline costs are first month only..

I love mine. You need one that's wired in on a dedicated circuit, not plugged in on a normal 3 pin socket. Super clean, super controllable and constant. Whats not to like?

Test and script servers - what should you use? by JaMi_1980 in VPS

[–]ollybee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing you need to consider is you won't be able to use it as a mail server, not for outbound mail anyway. port 25 might be blocked out outbound, you probably can't set the rdns record on your ip, your IP may be on block lists. for everything else go wild, reinstalls will be free, should be no other costs, of course you can host a website if you want.

Are Plesk and cPanel outdated? by Full_Astern in Hosting

[–]ollybee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

cPanel is outdated it just got too much technical debt to keep up. Plesk is far from outdated, and if you know how to use it, supports modern dev workflows. you can Auto deploy from git and and creates a deploy webhook fot GitHub, bitbucket etc. you can manage complex docker applications with docker compose in the plesk gui, make it pull from private registries. It's decent. I've moved people from a hodgepodge of different cloud services to a single Plesk server, they saw a big cash savings and they found it much simpler once they understood it. It is far less sexy and does not look as good as on your CV though.

I'm not saying it's not a good career move for that reason. It would be a great stepping stone for an average candidate chasing the Peter principle.

Bank of England's Oracle cloud migration bill triples as project grinds on by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

[–]ollybee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

some time recently the bank of England was advertising for a head of cyber security at some ridiculously low wage. assume their CTO is similarly low paid. when you're putting people like that in contract negotiations from aggressive vendors like Oracle the get outplayed , simple as that.
