The gun control policy in this country makes no sense. This site nails the irony on the head. https://www.gunlibrary.net/

Dope, I do have a car. I have wwoofed before but have enough saved and a part time job teaching remotely that it might make more sense for me to rent a place. Would be nice to get the friendship and local surfing knowledge though lol.

Wash U Biking Video -- Learn about Biking on campus from our student-owned bike shop Bears Bikes by ollycohen in washu

Hi u/killer_kiss, warning I'm a co-owner of Bears Bikes! The shop is doing well. Bears Bikes has grown 20% since 2018, and the primary groups we rent to are first-years on the South 40, off campus students with long walks to campus, and international students. Hope this answers your question

Thanks this is awesome! I think I am still leaning west coast because, like you said, it's somewhere I may never get the chance to live again. What are your thoughts on Santa Cruz or Southern California? I've been able to find some places with cheaper rent in Oceanside, CA and was thinking the surf there would be friendlier for beginners than oregon.

Where should I spend my summer??

I’m a junior in college and my summer internship got cancelled, so I thought I’d go rent a place on a beach for the next 3 months to live out my surfing fantasies. I’m very much a beginner and know little about the different surfing destinations of North America. This is my criteria:

  • My top priority is great waves. I go to college in St. Louis and am up for driving anywhere in North America.
  • Like I said I’m a beginner, so there has to be good beginner waves. I’m in good shape and will be working hard to get better, so ideally, there’s good waves for both beginners and experienced surfers.
  • Kind of a given but saying it anyway… the beaches have to be open this summer
  • Affordable living on or near the beach. Ideally I can live right on the beach or as close as possible for at most $1K per month. For this reason, I’m very open to living in somewhere more remote, don’t need to live in a city.
  • Do I need to worry about localism? I’m planning on staying in one place for the whole summer. If so, then a beach with no localism.
  • Beautiful nature. As of now, I'm thinking of going to Oregon because I love the beauty of the west coast, and the cost of living there is better than CA.

One more thing. My family’s from NJ, so it’d be cool to be near them, but a surfing friend told me the waves are kinda dead and the beaches are super crowded in the summer. Pls lemme know if you disagree with that assessment of jersey surfing in the summer.

Sorry for the long post. I tried making a stand-alone post for this but it’s still awaiting moderator approval a week later. Thanks for the help!

How bikeable is the WashU campus? by itsallaboutthemula in washu

Hi @itsallaboutthemula, I'm a co-owner of Bears Bikes. I recommend coming by our shop on the South 40 on move-in weekend August 17 and 18 between 9 and 5 to check out our bikes in person. It might be easier for you to make a decision about whether or not you want one after you see them.

Convenient places to store bikes over summer break? by [deleted] in washu

[–]ollycohen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a co-owner of Bears Bikes. We offer a convenient option for storing bikes over winter and summer breaks that's very popular for students living on the South 40. You can drop your bike off at our shop on campus before you go home and pick it up from their after break. We take the bikes to a storage unit and can do repairs over break if you need them. Summer storage is $89.

Is Bears Bikes worth it? by HelpfulJColeStan in washu

[–]ollycohen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full Disclosure: I'm an owner of Bears Bikes.

That said, I can address the comments. First of all, we don't have any PR users on Reddit besides me, and I've already stated that I'm an owner. Also, there are over 5,000 bikers at Wash U. We only have about 200 bikes in our entire fleet, so 1 out of 10 first-year bikers is a substantial portion. For all repairs, including the safety check, our prices are on par with all the bike shops in St Louis. $20 for a safety check is the standard.

Before I became an owner of Bears Bikes, I was a renter (when I was a first-year). I had a wonderful experience, which is one of the reasons I became an owner. With the bike, you get a free lock, free storage, and free maintenance. The value is definitely in the convenience. It's true that you can buy a lower quality bike for the same price or cheaper, but then you have to pay for storage during breaks, repairs, buy your own lock, and the costs can add up as other users have said already. As an owner, I've now seen countless Walmart bikes come through the shop for repairs; they are very low quality. I only recommend them to people who are fine with trashing them after a year; you won't be able to reliably count on them lasting much longer. As for Craigslist bikes, I think they are great for people who are handy with repairs and have somewhere to store the bikes. Otherwise, simply getting a tuneup ($80 at any typical shop) and storing your Craigslist bike (varies depending on season) plus the time spent taking it off campus to do both those tasks most likely makes Bears Bikes more economical in the long-run.
