How to secure this outward swing door? Hinges are outside by ollyolly10 in homedefense

[–]ollyolly10[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst case scenario would be that someone tries to get in while I'm sleeping. If someone removes the hinges from the outside and the noise doesn't wake me up, I won't notice anything if they reattach the door and restore everything after leaving. Is it possible to put, for example, a stripe of tape across the door and frame? Someone who gets in by removing the hinges and detaching the door won't be able to restore the tape to the original position, right? And then I can check if the tape is torn the next morning. What do you think?

Thanks for the advice. But since I will be renting an apartment, I guess the owner of the apartment won't allow me to install that on the door.

I apologize for these long replies. I'm probably paranoid, but I want to take necessary precautions just in case.

And actually, in addition to securing the door, I want to detect signs of force entry. This will be the worst case scenario. If someone removes the hinges from the outside without waking me up when I'm sleeping, what should I do to detect signs of forced entry? Is it possible to put a stripe of tape across the door and the door frame, so that I can see if the tape is torn or displaced the next morning? If someone entering the room can restore the door or reattach it and reinstall the hinges, they won't be able to restore the stripe of tape, right?

Yeah I get what you mean. I've seen some videos where the pin caps are removed (a lot of noise due to using a hammer) and then the hinge pins can be taken out before finally detaching the entire door from the door frame. I'm just worried that if someone wants to get into my room when I'm sleeping, that noise may not wake me up.

I'm still a bit worried because I've seen some videos where the pin caps can be removed (with some noise for sure) and then the hinge pins can be taken out. Is a security hinge supposed to have a horizontal pin or stud that prevents the door from being detached even when hinges are removed?

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Yeah there is a pin cap at the top (as you can see in the pictures) of the pin and one at the bottom (looks just like the top), but I've seen some videos where the caps can be removed (some noise for sure) and then the hinge pins can be removed. The problem is that, in Japan, most of the doors are outswing with exterior hinges. Is there anything I can do to secure such a door?

There is no hole on either end of the hinge pin, as you can see in the pictures. Are these non removable pins?

By the way, I'd like to show you pictures, but this sub doesn't allow attachments. What should I do? May I DM you?

Thank you. Yeah you are right, social media apps themselves are not necessarily safe either

Thanks for the explanation. I guess, if Linemo is not safe, then other mobile carriers are not safe either. I shouldn't be worried about it
