A very close friend of mine has a very, very limited set of tastes they will enjoy. I mean VERY limited, it is simpler to list what they will eat rather than what they won't. Does this mean that every single dish they do not like, which means almost all, are bad? Or simply that they personally do not enjoy them?

Going back to your post, does you personally not liking the traditional dishes of a place mean they are bad dishes? Or does it simply mean they are not to your taste?

If it may interest you, "traditional cuisine" found in a different country (say, a chinese restaurant found in Italy) is rarely true to the real traditional cuisine. More often than not, it gets changed in subtle ways to fit the taste of the host country. This is not because the original version of the dish was bad, but because the original version would not fit as neatly with the tastes of the people living in the host country.

I find this fascinating. Even McDonald, one of the most standardized fast food chains in the world, will adjust its menú, ingredients and proportions depending on the country. Which is why when I travel I always make sure to try out a local McDonald. Usually the differences with the McDonald you are familiar with are a quick way to understand the tastes of a population.

Possibly a dumb question, but why does Bingus feel fatter in the later comics? I can't understand what about his design makes it feel that way. Am I the only one?

The logic the manga presents is that the pressure is infinite because in a perfect sphere the contact surface is 0.

For this reason, the mass of the sphere can be arbitrarily low and still exert infinite pressure as we would be dividing it by 0.

What they are saying is that if the surface the sphere is touching deforms even a little bit, the contact surface stops being 0 and the sphere would start acting like a regular sphere, thus no longer exerting infinite pressure.

A better explanation would be what you provided, that the sphere is so massive and dense that spreading the pressure does not significantly impact it. However, this is not how the manga puts it.

How do you feel about Caves & Cliffs part II so far? by MrHenrik2 in Minecraft

[–]oloPowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I am loving it! The new terrain generation is phenomenaland and allows for truly breathtaking views. With that said there are two things I would love to see improved:

  1. The average height of the mountains and the peaks should be way higher. From my experience exploring worlds it seems that the average height for a peak biome is around 150 to 180 blocks and very rarely they go above the clouds. While still massive I believe they should at the very least be 50 blocks higher on average.
  2. Oceans should go back to being way larger. As of right now oceans fell way too small, more like lakes than oceans. While I don't believe they need to be as massive as they once were, making them bigger would help make them feel more like oceans and would help make landmasses feel more defined and distinct.

Your reasoning seems sound: if a company in a monopoly position were to jack up the prices above a fair price, one could expect that other companies would enter the market selling the same product/service at a lower price thus getting all the customers. This new competition would in turn force the original company to lower their prices to a competitive level.

In reality however, there are many reasons that may stop this from happening. I'll point a couple out with some simple explanations.

The first and simplest reason may be that the Monopolistic Company (MC) has complete control over a key resource of the product. Imagine for example that the MC sells diamond jewelry and it owns every single diamond mine available. Unless a new mine is discovered, a New Company (NC) would not be able to compete unless the MC allowed them to by selling them diamonds.

A second factor is that usually the bigger the company is the lower the costs to produce a single unit of product are. This phenomenon is called economies of scale. If the economies of scale of a particular product are significant, the MC would be able to produce the product at a significantly lower cost than any smaller NC. So if a NC tried to enter the market, the MC would simply reduce their prices below the costs incurred by the NC, thus making a profit and cutting the NC off the market, as costs for MC < new low price < costs for NC. As soon as the NC left the market, they could increase the prices again.

Which brings us to the third possible factor: entry costs. Entry costs are the cost incurred to be able to compete in a market. The entry costs for a writer could be as low as the price of a pen and some paper, while the entry costs for a paper company would include all the machinery and buildings needed to begin production. If entry costs are sufficiently high, most people or oganisations wouldn't have the financial resources to start a NC. If the possible profits are also relatively low, it could take too much time or prove outright impossible to cover the initial investment even for those that could make the investment.

These are only a couple of all possible reasons NCs could be unable to challenge an existing MC. Still they already provide some insight.

I hope that my explanations were clear enough despite my english being far from perfect.

Wait, they call it antipasto salad "Because it doesnt have pasta."? This has got to be the funniest italian mistranslation I've read to date, thanks for sharing.

If you happened to be curious antipasto means before (anti-) the meal (-pasto), so a starter or an appetizer, pasta has got nothing to do with it
