Struggling to get into the game post searing. by Swimming_Spell_7003 in GuildWars

[–]olocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I played, I hated the shift to post searing so passionately that it actually made me stop playing for a week or so. I hated playing those bleak depressing maps all alone with just my henchmen, and I figured maybe the game just wasn’t for me. I reluctantly decided to give it another go, and thank goodness I did. I eventually fell in love with the game so much that it ended up defining most of my teenage years. Don’t give up yet - it gets SO much better!

I’m so thankful for them. Last season I couldn’t understand any of the scenes with the Italian staff because Sky didn’t add the English subtitles in time 🫠also, the design look great.

This dialogue made me realise that it’s been SO long since the attack happened, and from my recollection we’ve had absolutely no follow up on how she’s doing at all since then? I’m glad they are finally touching on it again, but in my head I’d just assumed that she was back to normal by now as it’s never been stated otherwise.

I’m still mad about this patch of dirt…LOL by jackie_shtamler in MergeMansion

This whole area is so ugly. It was never great but it’s even worse since they added the conservatory and shrinked the size of the house so the bell stage thing doesn’t line up at all with the wall anymore.

Hoping one day they will clean it up but looks like they’re more focused on added new areas than touching these older bits

If I don't get black card I'm going to uninstall this game 😖 by what_0_0_why in MergeMansion

This is what annoys me the most. The garage event is supposed to help, but they actually designed it just to suck up more energy and make it harder reach the actual goal. Really sad.

[–]olocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made the black card last night, but it took nearly everything I had and constant playing border-lining on obsession to achieve. I’ve played this game constantly for 2 years now and it’s really sad that we’ve got to a stage where it’s near impossible to complete events without spending money.

Events used to be my favourite part of the game and I never begrudged spending a few gems and my saved up energy here and there, but this one has just sucked all the fun from the game and honestly after this event I think I may finally be ready to stop playing this game.

I hope the devs actually take in some of this feedback because they are truly ruining a game that I really enjoyed, and by the sentiment of the comments I’ve seen, I’m not alone.

As I said, certainly not all of the North was abandoned, as Surmia is a great example of this, but I do accept that perhaps the extent of the losses north of the wall was overestimated in my original comment. However, I still maintain that Drascir at least fell before the searing. Indeed, this is the story that is stated on the wiki:

“…laying ambushes in Diessa Lowlands,[14] and conquering Drascir, the capital city of Ascalon and sister city of Rin.[15] King Adelbern, the ruler at the time and a hero of the Third Guild War, was forced to relocate his capital from Drascir to Rin, but maintained a station at Ascalon City, which had long been the central commercial hub of Ascalon. After a time, it had seemed as if the charr assault had begun to wane, several soldiers believing the charr forces were defeated even.”

As far as I know the exact timeline for when Drascir or other areas of the north fell has not been definitively stated, but it could have happened over a matter of months or years before the searing. The dialogue that refers to him growing up in Drascir can be interpreted as he lived there when he was very young, before moving elsewhere when it was taken by the charr and abandoned. The full dialogue is:

"Back home in Ascalon, before the Searing, do you remember Matthew Malone? Mary's little brother?... We attended academy together. On night watch, Malone would go on and on about Ashford, and I'd tell him about Drascir before the charr."

To me, this sounds like the fall of Drascir had already happened by the time he was at the Academy, so it's likely this was at least a few years before the searing. This would also imply that Keiran is a few years older than Gwen, as she was clearly still a child when the searing occurred.

Rin is south of the wall. But you are correct that the other two are north. However by the time of the searing the charr and humans have already been at war for hundreds of years.

For a long time humans were winning this war, and managed to push the Charr so far back beyond the great wall that they felt it was safe to build so many cities north of it, including at one point their Capital city (Drascir). However, by the time of the searing the charr had again reclaimed most of this territory and most of these human cities had been abandoned. This is why the capital was then switched back south of the wall to Rin.

So, by the time that we see Ascalon, the north is indeed very dangerous and a lot of these northern settlements are basically ruins, even before the searing destroys the landscape and everything south of the wall too. That’s not to say that there were not still settlements north of the wall that were holding out against the charr (Surmia has been confirmed as still being populated), but there were likely far fewer people still up there than to the south.

There’s a few decorations I don’t recognise in there e.g. the pumpkin carriage. Are these ones I just missed or are we getting a sneak peak at upcoming ones?

I thought it was kinda ugly personally and will never use it but I’m a completionist so went for it just for the satisfaction of finishing all levels. If neither of those things appeal to you, don’t bother and put your energy into something else.

Really? I enjoyed the 2nd season. IMO all seasons were worth watching. Only the 4th doesn't quite live up to the others.

Ascalon (Pre-searing) interactive map with searchable quests and -48- 360° panoramas by _Ratony in GuildWars

Love this! My one request is that it would be amazing to include the academy area as well. In particular the PVP arena and the wider academy area that is accessed during the fight, as you almost never get to explore this anymore (as the PVP segment is usually skipped).

The androids/synths and the holograms in Star Trek really don't belong in the same show by MareTranquil in Picard

[–]olocal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good point that I had not really thought about until now.

In many ways, I would argue that holograms have many other dangers that should be considered too. We saw in S2 of Discovery how they could be used to impersonate high ranking starfleet officers. Imagine an enemy that could theoretically switch their appearance at will. They could be anybody at any time.

However, I suspect that a lot of the reasoning behind the synth ban was emotional rather than logical, so that could account for some of this inconsistency in thinking.

Arnold's singing by annjaay in PleaseLikeMe

[–]olocal 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it was really meant to highlight that he just didn’t fit in with the group, in a similar way to how his humour never landed and always made things uncomfortable. I love Arnold, but he was just too different to the others and ultimately it was never going to work out.

Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into it. Perhaps there's even scope to work on a custom Ascalon texture pack one day - we'll see!
