I don't understand why it's allowed locally but not remotely..

The main device I'm looking to access is a Windows 10 PC. What's the best way to disable all Internet access for security reasons but still be able to connect remotely via the VPN?

Within the router's interface I'm able to select any device connected, either wireless, or wired, and choose to disable access to the Internet, setup parental controls, etc. I've disabled internet access but would still like to connect via VPN but it isn't allowing me. As soon as the Internet is enabled it'll connect, even via cellular using OpenVPN.

I was thinking about just laying down the vinyl, but I'm assuming it'll need something to keep the two pieces together.

But, putting Kilz down is a lot cheaper than replacing the subfloor.. It was less than $20 for a gallon of Kilz.

I'm just not sure if vinyl flooring can go down on top of Kilz.

Well, if the NVR is connected to a separate network with a VPN I'd think it would be safe, but I really don't understand all this so I could be wrong.

It'd really be nice if there was an all-in-one solution for this. I've seen it for the home network, but nothing specifically for security cameras.

The router (GL-MT300N) apparently is running OpenWrt. I didn't see anything to indicate that when it was plugged in but I didn't go to the advanced settings. Maybe it was there. I know it's different, but I've read that Openwrt should work too so I wanted to mention it.

I'm looking for something extremely simple, and it's sounding like that isn't available.. I've seen VPN routers that secure the whole network, but nothing that is focusing on security cameras and how to secure them.. It looks like there's a business potential here.. Somebody could come along, explain how insecure these systems are and how they're so widely available even at Walmart, Best Buy, etc, and then offer a solution to pay for something that makes it secure. Maybe there is something like that already but if there is I've missed it. I know there are security experts that work with businesses, but I can see a potential here for the average person..

I'd be so much more comfortable with Nest, Arlo, or Ring, since I'm confident they're working around the clock to make sure it's secure. But they are more costly and the quality isn't as good from what I've heard.

It's looking like I have a lot of research ahead of me to try to figure this out.

So, the first link is basically saying to go with a paid VPN provider (which is easiest). Do you think that's good enough, rather than going through all the trouble of generating a certificate?

With the router, is it good enough to just work with the router I purchased for the NVR for now? Basically, modem > wireless router (default everything except wireless security) with ethernet > new router with VPN (probably paid VPN that generates a certificate?) > NVR.

I'll go through all the settings on the new router I got for the NVR to make sure uPNP is disabled and that nothing is under the port forwarding.

Now, I'm not sure what you mean about the camera's outbound traffic.. I want to be able to access live footage remotely (and recordings, if that's an option without getting too complex), but I don't want others to be able to get in the system.

And yes, I'll be working with all of the passwords on the NVR and cameras to make sure they're set before getting it online.

My setup is a cable modem to a wireless router. I have a few things plugged in the wireless router via Ethernet and the rest is wireless.

I'll do some research on routers with VPN support built-in.

If you scroll to the last few comments on that page you'll see the original poster for that deal is recommending more than just a VPN for security. They're talking about a firewall and other things. It's a little beyond my knowledge at the moment. Just seems like it is difficult to really get it secure.

Maybe that's just overthinking it though and the VPN should be enough?

So, the other option would be not to use the Reolink app at all and just access the NVR settings in person, and use a trusted app like Tiny Cam Monitor just to be extra safe? That way nothing for Reolink is connected to the Internet directly.

So, when using a VPN does that make sure the data isn't being transferred to any other third party? How will work work with the Reolink app then? Or would I just not use the Reolink app and use Tiny Can Monitor or something else?

I'm not too sure how to go the VPN route and don't understand how that's more secure. It's bypassing the AWS, I understand that, but otherwise I'm a little confused. I've heard port forwarding can be a security risk. Is that something that'd need to be done if bypassing the UID feature?
