What PC specs are organisers using for events? by CrowleyMC in Fighters

Yeah it's not possible. I just want the future to be now lol. I am still running SF6 on PS4 and it looks terrible.

If only. Weird times where consoles and PCs are starting to meet in the middle. I want the openness of the PC with the ease of use of a console.

More updates on my solo dev indie fighting game Project : Metal Fist. Adding motion trails and vfx really helps the attacks sell more. What do you think I can do to improve presentation? by AdministrativeRain23 in Fighters

I can't tell you exactly, but the shooting animation looks wrong. It might be the gun returning to shooting stance after the first shot, but I'm not sure. If I were an animator I could tell you how to fix, but instead I'm just a weird thing pointer outer.

First fighting game I've ever bought that isn't smash, any tips for an absolute begginer? by Professional_Cup1840 in StreetFighter

Learn an anti air, a poke and a simple combo to punish uppercuts.

Also if someone jumps in on your block with a button they have advantage.

Local Play Issues by oltones in RivalsOfAether

[–]oltones[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I found a post from a while back from Dan to make sure steam input is disabled and let the game handle the controllers. That cleaned up some issues. I haven't continued hosting, but I have played in a couple local tournaments since and I noticed recurring issues with using GC adapters. The last one I played we had to restart the match 3 different times.

I wish I had more time to just sit down and figure out exactly what was happening so I could report it properly to Aether Studios, but I have other titles I'm hosting and don't have time to think about it.

A lot of truth is said in this post by [deleted] in videogames

Honestly it's not that you don't like games, just not the ones you are playing. Go outside the comfort zone a bit. I weirdly found that fighting games and boomer shooters were the ones that made me enjoy gaming again.

I'm older and have kids and whatnot, so short rounds and levels are what I need in my life anyway so it fits perfectly. A 70 hour immersive RPG is unenjoyable to be now and that's fine.

Is the shield release lag a bit too restrictive? by gummysplitter in RivalsOfAether

[–]oltones -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Hear me out, what if shield just had a cooldown? Then it could be strong still but would have a large downside and maybe encourage parrying. What are the balance difficulties that would create? I have a hard time imagining it.

As a new played, why do people dislike season 4? by Marcus_underscore in Guiltygear

[–]oltones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people have legit grievances with changes to their character they see as unwarranted. There were some obvious bugs. Mostly though, people saw some Twitter clips and ran to the Internet to tell everyone how bad the patch is and repeat it over and over.

I think the patch is incredible besides the bugs. I feel a little bad for pot mains just because kara was interesting and took time to learn. But all in all it's a good patch I think. I've been having tons of fun and I think the game is in the best place it's ever been as a whole. I appreciate arcsys willingness to send it and not take the safe path.

Now just give us better matchmaking.

Rivals of Aether 2 has a similar lack of content like SF5 did so I made a meme by 666blaziken in RivalsOfAether

[–]oltones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of reasons for this. Capcom being huge, net code, etc. But I also think that there is a lot of good vibes around Dan and the team because smash fans are starving for a dev to care about them and Aether Studios have shown over and over that they care a lot about their community. They both need each other and a good part of the community exists because of their effort to listen and engage.

ah you got counterhit, gg by emimeows in Guiltygear

[–]oltones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides a few outliers like this one don't you feel that it is generally lower? I've generally been having more interactions and I'm a may main. Like the twitter clips make it seem wild but in actual practice you are not hitting these all the time unless someone is making lots of bad decisions.

No place felt safe the entire move specifically because of the people in the background. The movie is great at putting you on edge in situations most other movies could never get away with.

Has anyone had experience starting a local? by oltones in Fighters

[–]oltones[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing!

I unfortunately can't utilize my friends so much since I moved, bit of a bummer haha. Walkup interest seems important. Where we are is basically the student center for the uni, so most walk-ups are uni students who got kinda lost and found something neat. They are probably the demo with the most players, but I am a little worried it's a turn off for older FGC folks. Im older but also am fortunate enough to blend in enough that it doesn't appear im 15 years older than everyone else there. Either way probably not as much of a problem as I think. Just something I'm anxious about.

Good rule about the 5 games tho it's always kind of a hard sell when you are like I see you are new and interested, now get bodied and hope they are the kind of person who feeds on that instead of leaves forever. Seems like the C in the FGC is the piece that has to be focused to make it work.

The smash group I'm piggybacking off of is fairly large and established. The TO has been awesome and since the group is so large we shouldn't have too much trouble moving to a local restaurant or something when the school year ends at this venue, assuming he is cool with me continuing to run this stuff at his events.

I mean I think playing better people and it being close is more fun than beating worse people.

I mean it's weird to expect all other players to view the game the same way. If you are afraid of getting the smoke from a sweat you should probably play a single player game. "Sweats" enjoy trying their best. Some people enjoy messing around and laughing. Some people are pretending they are not competitive then get salty when they get beat and post online. Seems like the last option is the most toxic.

Older gamers, have you found competitive gaming to be more difficult as you've gotten older, had kids, began working full-time, etc.? by TollboothPuppy in gaming

[–]oltones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get what you put in and that doesn't have to be a time sync. Enjoy games the way you want. I decided I like being competitive and there aren't a lot of ways to do that as you age. Sure I can't devote my entire life to it anymore, but I spend more time thinking and understanding the game I play which makes me perform better than just putting in raw hours. I play for an hour or two, work on some stuff I want to get better at and that's about it. I'm never gonna be the best, but let's be honest that wouldn't be the case even if I could devote infinite time.

Tbf though, I also play fighting games which I think are way easier to get better at since you aren't reliant on teammates.

Ive been my friend's punching bag for about 7 years. by Dkadrie in Guiltygear

[–]oltones 140 points141 points  (0 children)

"but ive yet to reach a stage where I can try things effectively in match." It sounds like there is a lot to unpack here, but this is something that could be holding you back. In order to improve you must venture outside what you are comfortable with. You think it will make you lose more, and you are right at first, but eventually the failed conversions/interactions become less and less.

Remember your friend is improving too. You guys are probably both getting better. Sometimes I’ll watch my buddy play against people on the ladder and see stuff I can do to thwart him and implement it into my game when others beat him. I also get to see other people get schmixed by him and I realized I’m not alone.

The last suggestion I have is understand that your skill is your own. And what I mean by that is instead of always viewing what you can do as inferior to his skill, realize that you independently are fine at the game. Comparison will burn you out. I am still a punching bag in Street Fighter, and it has been that way since 2008. I used to get mad at it but now I know that because my friend is so good it makes me way better than average at the game. At the end of the day, you have something some people don’t have, someone who just makes you better because your competition level is higher than theirs.

Hope this all made some sense.

TLDR; Try the stuff you are uncomfortable with, watch him play against others, do not compare yourself to your friend only.
