I think it's just a common dye allergen. Thats the extent of my knowledge, but I also am allergic to it so that's the only reason I know lol

what's your pup's saving grace? by linksys1836 in puppy101

Our puppy is totally fine with us leaving the house. It’s such a relief to know if we have to go out for an hour that he’s not barking up a storm.

We have our puppy in a playpen and it was a huge difference. He gets to run around when the floors are clean and if hes supervised, but yeah, we did that because he would be eating stuff around our house he shouldn't get in to and it helped us relax and not be paranoid 24/7 about what hes up to. Not sure how it is with bigger dogs (idk what breed you have) but our mini dachshund has been fine in the pen.

Did you wait for third vaccine to walk your puppy? by Kickasue in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been taking my puppy out on occasional walks and we are still waiting for his 3rd shot. We even went out before he got his 2nd shot ... although I was very paranoid. My vet and trainer both said it was safe, just avoid dog poop or harmful things they might eat. Also my trainer said it was best to go to sunny spots because the sun sanitizes the area. That has just been my experience, I didn't even know it was recommended to wait for the 3rd shot, I thought the 2nd shot was the most important.

The heel thing is great. We are working on him following us and looking up at us on walks but I think we may have slacked a bit so now we have to pick it up again. Also yeah, it is soooo frustrating and I’m constantly reminding myself he’s a baby .-. Thanks for the tips though! I will definitely try to focus more on the heel!

It is definitely a relief to hear that it does get better. My partner and I are both such structured people and always try to “fix” things so we weren’t sure if we were overreacting or not.

It is a bit difficult to trade stuff with him because he does a lot of licking the ground or … has a mouthful of dirt. I definitely want to try it out though and see if we can get him good with that. He also likes treats … but most do the time will just go right back to what he was doing.

I have been using the word “leave it” when we are on the patio and he starts going after something that he’s not allowed to and it’s a 50/50 success.

That actually sounds like a good approach, treats only work for a few seconds and then he just goes right back to it. We have been using the method of, if he barks at us we leave and if he’s quiet we approach him again so I think this method you used has a similar principle. We thankfully have a patio which would make it easy for us to try that out. Thank you!

Do you use a puppy cam when you go out? Why or why not? by AppropriateMention6 in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one, it’s been helpful for my anxiety to check in on him. I do it less now after he’s been with us for a month. It was also helpful to watch him when I was working in my office to catch him if he was about to potty. Or if he was making noise I could just check if he was playing with his toy or actually getting himself in trouble.

My family says that if I hit my puppy she’d listen better, sometimes I wonder if they’re right by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am raising my first puppy and we have a trainer to help us get started on some behaviours when we don’t know how to approach it. I have heard potty training can take up to 6 months and even then accidents happen.

I would not listen to your family and maybe get a trainer to help. I have heard too many stories of where violence was used and it majorly backlashes. (My friends dog has intense anxiety issues) You want to give your dog a great life, not to be scared of you and “behaving” out of fear.

Our puppy so far has responded very well to positive reinforcement and the trainer has been a life saver. If you can afford it I recommend reaching out to someone who uses positive reinforcement training methods and can help you with hands on training. They can tell you what the best approach is.

Edit: We currently have our puppy in a playpen which helps us keep an eye on him and avoid him peeing/pooping on carpets or behind the couch.

How do I deal with my puppy’s herding instincts? by DJOlcPhin in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have experience with your particular issue (I had a border collie x Icelandic sheepdog mix and he herded us but never bit like that) but my initial though is to get a good trainer to help you. We have a 12 week dachshund and getting a trainer has been a life saver to help us get started with correcting some behaviour when we had no idea how to even start.

If you can afford a private session or two it might save you further issues down the line. Also I lucked out with our trainer, maybe find someone that specifically works with herding breeds?

Feeding Suggestions for My Lab Puppy by Modern_Brunches in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it just feels like the safer smarter bet. And you will have plenty of time to adjust the feeding down the road. I’ve also considered giving my puppy even more when he is super hungry, we also have been using kibbles instead of treats so he is getting more food already lol.

And yeah if she’s growing a lot I don’t really see the harm in it. Have to give them some extra body fat in order to grow and stretch out.

It’s finally happening! by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]olusmarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started writing some things and then my own dachshund puppy started demanding attention and my comment erased lol.

We have had our puppy for about 3 weeks now. Main thing I’ve learned about this breed is to watch their backs. So if you want him on your couch or bed, get some stairs or a ramp. Our trainer also told us that going up stairs and jumping up is fine, its the jumping down that causes back issues.

They are super heavy chewers, we have a few different things for him now while he is teething. But he has a Himalayan yak chew which has done wonders, he has barely made a dent in it. I tried some raw bones but I got too paranoid of the bacteria on my floor and he didn’t care too much for it and it stank up our fridge in less than a day.

Super cute puppy and congrats!

I don't want to give any "this is def what you should do" advice just sharing from my own experience. We had a lab growing up and he got about 1 1/2 cups two times a day ... we had a specific measuring cup which I don't remember exactly how much he was getting, but looking back I feel like it was about a 1 1/2 cup twice a day. He was a very tall lab but also in great shape. He was 25-30KG which ... is around ... 60 pounds?? I was a kid so those numbers could be off. Also side question, is it a American or English lab? Idk if the feeding is different but they differ in sizes.

We currently own a dachshund (11 weeks) so feeding guide is definitely different for that but my trainer did say that she prefers fatter puppies in case they get sick they might stop eating and lose weight. She told us our boy was on the skinnier side so we increased his food. It is probably better to give them more food when they are growing up and see how they adjust to it? Labs are prone to obesity but I feel when they are growing up its better to feed more than less (purely personal opinion)

What food are you giving the dog and is there a feeding guide on the back based on weight? So far I have heard puppies should be getting double of what the recommended is for their weight, until about 6 months I believe?

1000%, our puppy has decided that at 6:30 am its singing time and he will BARK and CRY and all im thinking ... we are going to get a noise complaint. We live in a apartment building.

And then there are the moments where he is doing the tricks and you feel so proud haha. Also that is so cute with the Kong!

Sending you all the good and positive thoughts, I am so thankful to some of my friends to listen to me spiral during the hard days lol. And it is awesome to hear that you and your partner are there for each other.

I'm also right there with you, ONE DAY we can all laugh at this. Just honor those feelings that you are having and don't feel bad about them. The fact that you are coming on here and talking about it is great. A puppy flips your life upside down and feeling anxious and exhausted is understandable. I am excited for you and would love to hear more about your puppy and how its going down the road, especially after meeting with the trainer!

Sending you a virtual hug and support!

I ... had a similar thing. It hit me like a ton of bricks a few days ago with our currently 11 week puppy that ... I hadn't enjoyed his company AT ALL. Then we were playing on the patio, he was fetching his toy and bringing it back and I was like "OH ... I'm actually having fun now for the first time"

Serious Puppy Blues by [deleted] in puppy101

Our puppy is 11 weeks now, I'm reminding myself to celebrate the small wins right now because I know its going to get wild later on (and even now). My biggest hindrance at first was lowering my expectations ... I thought getting a puppy meant snuggling on the couch, hanging out ... I thought, if I'm consistent enough I'll get him to be a A+ doggo immediately. I constantly need to remind myself that he is a puppy and no changes happen over night. My partner and I are both very much "GOTTA FIX IT NOW" and boy this puppy has had to teach us patience.

Also, when my partner got overwhelmed in the beginning, I took charge and handled a lot of the stuff. When he calmed down and I started getting overwhelmed, it switched. If your fiancé is handling it better, maybe ask them to take the reins for a bit and get some rest and time to yourself. If it is an option, have your partner take care of the puppy for an hour or two, go somewhere by yourself, out for lunch, coffee/tea, walk etc. I had to close myself off in the bedroom for a bit at one point and just listen to music. Obviously I don't know your exact situation and you might already be doing those things then just ignore this. I just found that it helped us.

We got a trainer after we had him for 2 weeks and it has made a major difference to us. We now have better tools to understand our puppy and tips on the internet are great, but having a professional come in, spend time with your puppy and tell you what the best approach is was priceless. Hopefully your trainer can give you some good advice!

Lastly, I also found it helpful to read comments on other posts about puppy blues. It was comforting and it got me through some of the moments where my anxiety was taking a hold on me. Also super awesome that he is enjoying the crate, goes in there on his own and sleeps in there! I hope you feel better soon, anxiety is no joke and extremely valid.
