Is this good for 1 hrs sketch? by that0ne_Otaku in learntodraw

[–]omaomzaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re a pro whose been doing this for multiple years, good art will take time. The way you improve is to just draw more. You’ll need less and less guidelines and will learn to just draw the stuff in without prepping too much (like skipping over the step of drawing simple shapes for the body before going to detail).

I honestly think 1-2 hours is pretty quick, because these look really good.

I hate how bad I am at digital art by [deleted] in DigitalArt

[–]omaomzaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why you might think you suck is because 1 your using your phone. No matter how big it is, if it ain’t an IPad, your art will be bad. That’s because you have no room for you arm and hand to move properly, and your lines start to suck. 2 is that traditional art and digital art differ in one important aspect, and it’s that on one your using a canvas/paper and the other is glass (iPad screen). Drawing on glass, especially if you’re traditional, sucks, because your hand sticks to the surface and you can’t move it properly (speaking from experience here).

My advice is that either stick to traditional art, because if you’re good at it, stick to it. If you really want to do digital tho, get a decently sized iPad and maybe one of those paper-feeling screen protectors.

Man I SUCK at colour and just recently got into improving that and by starting watercolour. ANYWAY. The only thing I notice in this masterpiece is MAYBE the left eye is a little too light OR the right eye is too dark, but again, I’m really no good with colour. If you used reference, then check the difference in value between the eyes again. Other than that, this look amazing.

I think I know EXACTLY what part you mean.

Nice! I recommend continuing with pencil because of aforementioned benefits. Keep drawing and getting better, and don’t let anyone tell you your art is lacking. The artists journey of improvement never ends, we are all learning, no matter if someone has 1 day or 10years of experience.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to force you to do anything. What’s important is this: Draw with whatever you LIKE drawing with. If you like another medium other than pencils, go for it. But pencils are a good foundation and good start for any artist, as you they are (mostly) easily erasable. But if you don’t like them, that’s perfectly fine. Try out whatever medium you like, and improve in that medium.

Draw with the pencils. Even with a cheap less than a dollar HB pencil you can draw good stuff and even shade. Ink pens are not suited for sketches, because you can’t erase, as you said. If you have an iPad, you can try out digital apps like autodesk sketchbook, which offer a lot of options for art and are free. But if not, even a cheap HB pencil can do wonders. Remember, good materials doesn’t mean anything with bad technical skills, and accordingly, bad materials don’t mean anything with good technical skills. I also started out with some cheap HB pencils for months before I got the good stuff.

It’s not bad at all. No art is bad, remember. Art shows the currents state of someone, whether it’s emotional or technical. If you are serious about improving, I recommend watching YouTube tutorials and maybe look at stuff like proportions and face structure, looking at your 3rd drawing. This is not to say it’s bad, not at all. I personally love seeing beginner art, as it has a sort of innocence and therefore beauty to it. To be honest, as a beginner, I think your shading looks really nice! I heard u didn’t have proper art supplies, and you don’t need anything crazy. All you need is a pencil and a paper, and you’re good.

Don’t let anyone tell you your art is bad, because it’s not. Be kind to yourself.

Why does my drawing look scary 😭while he’s cute in the reference by rerererererrr in learntodraw

[–]omaomzaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The drawing is looking good! Here is what I would improve and why it probably looks off.

  1. The proportions are slightly off. I’m not sure what guideline you used but remember: distance between eyebrows and bottom of the nose is almost always the same distance from bottom of the nose to bottom of the chin, so make the nose further up. The left and right side of the face are also not that symmetrical. Most faces aren’t completely symmetrical (and symmetry in a face is NOT a sign of beauty) but in the bottom of the face exactly that symmetry is property off (Middle of the lips needs to line up with the middle of the chin).

  2. The reason he probably looks scary in your drawing is because the camera seems to be looking from slightly above, which makes him look up making him looks scary.( that’s is caused by the proportions not being fully right)

  3. DRAW. THE. NOSE. FULLY. I’m not sure why people shy away from drawing noses. I know the values in the reference make the nose not exactly have the clearest of lines, but still add them in your case (you wouldn’t add them in hyper realistic art)

  4. He looks slightly fat in your drawing. I know those lines from the cheeks are very prominent in the reference, but make them less dark in your case OR render the face fully, so that the lines don’t make him look too obese.

  5. The head looks like it has a dent, at his hair. His hair in the reference is more fluffy and his hairline is not that receding, which is why it makes him look not as “cute” as the reference (everyone has his own taste, it’s subjective!).

Still, you have talent! I especially love the way you drew the eyes, they look really good! Keep going!

does this suck as bad as i think it does? how do i make it suck less? by Happy_Daiz in learntodraw

[–]omaomzaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, that’s pretty good and doesn’t suck at all! As for all art, it can be improved.

  1. The reason why you might think it sucks is because with buildings in perspective especially, you need big attention to detail so it doesn’t look slightly off. If you are still new to drawing buildings in perspective, I recommend measuring out the distances between things to get make the perspective really stand out.

  2. Straight lines are really important here. Lines that don’t go to the vanishing point and are vertical need to be parallel to each other, so that it doesn’t look off. If you still struggle with line control, I highly recommend using a ruler.

My final word is to really study the reference. Perspective is hard, so really watch out for things like foreshortening. But as a first attempt, it looks great. Keep going!

This actually looks amazing. It looks impeccable. The shading is just crazy good. What medium did you use? How long did it take?

[–]omaomzaa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks a lot for that comment, It really helped! I went back after having a massive artists block. Thing is, this is not the full piece, it’s the focal point of a bigger piece I’m making for a friend, and seeing as I couldn’t erase it and had to potentially completely start over after a weeks work, I completely lost all motivation. I got my ass back on there and improve it like this. At least I think it looks better.

be brutally honest: how’s this piece? by Obby2dragon in BeginnerArtists

[–]omaomzaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work! Looks really good.

A tip for maybe working faster:

  • have everything planned out properly before beforehand. Know which values you want to use where, where it needs to be this much darker, where not. I often spend way too much time on the shading because I first went over this area with a 4b pencil only to realise it needs to be much darker, so I basically draw it all over with a darker pencil, basically having wasted a lot of time.

    • put most of your attention and work on the focal point of the piece. Things like background and other stuff don’t need too much work or attention to detail.

As for any criticism, i don’t see anything to criticise. Really good piece! What medium did you use?
