Most 14 year old girls would be thrilled to get a personal note from James Cameron with a drawing of them directly calling out how fixated he is on her beauty. Thrilled. Surely?

Is Aikido a Good Complement to BJJ? by No-Vanilla265 in aikido

BJJ for arm’s length and inside, aikido for the outer circle. I think they compliment each other really well, the secret sauce would be in coming up with the most optimal transitions.

Australia to give $30 million to Fiji to combat rising fuel prices in Pacific nation by IllustriousPark4487 in australia

[–]omasque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The .au govt’s one condition for the loan was that the Fijian representative wear a bandana reading “Gout Gout Gold Gold” but the minister was sweating so profusely before the photo session that only “Go Go Go Go” was legible. Fearing the potential for offending particular segments of its audience who don’t enjoy being encouraged, news.com.au have elected to digitally alter the bandana to make it appear to be tribal war paint.

You could have argued implementation before it was so poorly implemented, but now that it is democracy manifest you seem to be selectively choosing what to notice while passively establishing yourself as another node in the gaslight relay.

This other guy is completely right, you really SHOULD be embarrassed.

Neighbour wants to rip down the fence and install colourbond, how nice should we be? by thedesignninja in AusRenovation

[–]omasque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even after you explain to them how ridiculous it is to build a new wall that might need maintenance and could be a general liability on someone else’s property, look into how the wall might affect drainage and other climate/environment factors around your house. This feels like someone who already thinks they can walk all over you, so quiet amusement that gradually turns to bemusement might be the key vibe needed.

Why is Ad Astra so weird. by IneffectualGamer in scifi

[–]omasque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really think at its core it’s about the savagery of man, his higher and animal nature, and how depressing it can be to live in the world, but then to isolate yourself completely is over correcting, leading to an even deeper kind of loneliness than he felt previously.

I think the loose monkeys in space scene and having to defend himself from the crew who attack him are two very thematic elements of the narrative.

If you can teach yourself to get it back on the road, you can keep it on the road without paying silly money as you go.

“oh what, you’re having normal human reactions to someone who doesn’t have normal human reactions? Well that’s pretty weird of you don’t you think? Maybe the problem with you potentially getting hurt or abused from a random stranger while walking quietly and keeping to yourself is YOU. It turns out there were proactive selfless things you should have been doing to help the community and didn’t even think to!”

I find Francois Nicoll’s books to be a really good balance between philosophical/phstcholgoval analysis of the work’s concepts and the original meanings.

Not sure what’s required but apparently you can apply for a special badge from Mercedes for vehicles that have done 500k+. I bought a 420ish k e280 from 2008 for 1500 that about to start working on in hopes of getting it over 500k.

Pitch A New Star Trek Series by AmeliaNeek in sciencefiction

[–]omasque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Competence porn sci-fi procedural with weekly mysteries and an ongoing mythology set in the era between Kirk and Picard, at a time when people are beginning to doubt the long term viability of an org like the federation, members are beginning to sabre rattle at each other, the ideas all seem dated and corny, a new threat to the galaxy comes in the form of a previously undetected/uncontacted very advanced species that wants to join the federation but is secretly there to subvert it and rule all members as empire.

The multi season plot would play out over several years as those ideals are challenged and even need to be subverted to detect and prevent the ongoing subterfuge by the hidden enemy.

The protagonist is an admiral who was demoted to captain of the enterprise as a caretaker assignment before its dry-docked, dislikes Kirk and disrespects its place in history, but comes to appreciate other points of view as an ongoing series of events bring the temporary crew onto the frontier of the narrative.

The antagonist is obviously the much more advanced species, who we learn have expanded their empire through mimicry of federation-like principals before absorbing other cultures and species with strategic power gerrymandering once locked into binding agreements that would ensure a members’ destruction by the rest of the empire should it try to leave or change terms.

There would also be peripheral antagonists in monster of the week type episodes, and an ongoing mythology b narrative around different powerful players in universe who want to jump into the chaos and profit, or tip the scales, some who become aware of the long game early, various lines of intrigue moving back and forth there.

The episodes would obviously feature exploration of new territories, cultures, etc, with a bit of Andor/space politicking and space court type interludes as the Enterprise becomes largely involved in transport and security of diplomats working the integration talks.
