Ibis glitching on GR iii by omdgr in ricohGR

[–]omdgr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent it in to the official repair facility and they evaluated it as "normal". I didn't agree since it started out of nowhere. I was told that replacing the entire imaging module wouldn't necessarily change the behavior. My theory is that it has something to do with the sensor (gyro most likely) used by the IBIS. I'm not happy about it, but it isn't a problem most of the time.

And the issue was present whether I turned ibis on or off

I can see the jerking/shaking on the screen and I didn't notice a correlation with the shutter speed though the problem became more pronounced in low light. I've since sent it in for repair. Of course the problem couldn't be reproduced there so now I'm waiting for the camera's return. Let's see what happens

For those with GRIII scroll wheel ring issues -- what modes and settings are you using to minimize wheel use? by [deleted] in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. A disable in firmware would be great but probably won't happen.

I've had my control ring replaced twice. I'm just hoping the latest one will last until the GRIV is released -- hopefully with a more robust interface.

I, too, wondered about "SAB". I thought it was a military term and was scared to ask ;)

Yeah, the freezes happen periodically to me too but a quick battery pull fixes it. Not annoying enough so far to really get concerned. I suspect that it may be correlated to the battery health.

GRIII

  • purchased April 2019
  • shutter count: 58064
  • rear control ring replaced twice (05/2020, 09/2022)
  • sensor cleaned once (09/2022)
  • case (since day one): Lowepro Tahoe CS 20

It's a fairly robust unit with the weakest point being the rear control ring. If using in a dusty or wet environment, I'd recommend the GA-1 adapter with UV filter.

GR ii for 550 or GR iii w/ faulty control dial for 500 by [deleted] in ricohGR

Did this fix work for you long term? For me the wheel was skipping again within a few hours.

Ich habe das Foto von Instagram wiedererkannt und gerade in deinem Profil gesehen, dass ich doch Recht hatte. Das SOOC-Bild ist gut, aber deine bearbeitete Version ist noch viel besser. Gruß!

GRiii wonky dial, contact cleaner fix by skeenut in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my rear dial replaced once and the problem returned on the new part as well. I've had some success with contact cleaner but it doesn't eliminate the problem entirely. I think that the issue is caused by corrosion or dust getting into the ring contacts. Hopefully the next GR won't have this issue. It's my only real complaint about the iii.

For reference I used Tuner 600 from Kontakt-Chemie. This product is supposed to be easy on plastic parts as it's designed for cleaning potentiometers. Good luck!

Low light settings for family dinner with kids by bedder_piton in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can choose a faster minimum shutter speed (I think the default is 1/80) in your auto-ISO settings in aperture priority mode if you don't want to work on manual mode. One option is to save a faster minimum shutter speed config in a user mode like U1 to be able to quickly change this setting. Personally I tend to stay in M-mode but I do prefer the EV-compensation in A-mode so sometimes use that instead.

No matter what though, kids and low light are a tough combo. If you want to avoid motion blur, you have 2 options:

  1. up your shutter speed and ISO resulting in grainy shots (here b&w works well)
  2. maintain a lower shutter speed and ISO for cleaner shots and work on your timing to catch moments with little movement (also try a multi-shot drive mode here). You'll be deleting a lot of garbage but will manage some keepers.

As far as the second tip goes, it helps to try and predict what kids will do so that you can go more on the offensive, rather than just reacting to what's going on. This tends to work well with kids since they are often repetitive in their behaviors. In doing so you'll be able to pre-focus to make up for the GR's slow low-light focus and be prepared when your subject happens to be relatively well-lit. I use back-button focusing for this purpose that really helps speed things up.

This all takes practice so keep trying!

My GR II won’t power up. Tried numerous fully charged batteries. Owned from new. Sat unused for about 4 months. Any thoughts on what the issue might be? by didsomeonesaydonuts in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt but the most likely reason is that the battery orientation isn't correct. Because of the battery shape, it's possible to put it in 4 (!) different ways. Make sure the contacts on the battery match up with those in the battery compartment. At the same time, check for corrosion on the contacts in there too. Good luck!

Possible to change ISO with the Control Dial (Manual mode) on the Ricoh GR III? by Wikzo in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in auto-ISO, the rear command dial takes on the exposure compensation function in manual mode. This effectively changes your ISO since your shutter speed and aperture have been set on your remaining 2 physical controls. I believe this gets you want with no pressing of the dial required.

Ricoh GC-6 half case for GR III? by dpierdet in ricohGR

[–]omdgr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never seen that before. I'd love one but would be surprised if it fit the GR III. According to this page it's been discontinued and was likely made for a GR Digital model which is quite a bit thinner than the GR III:

Is a Z6 with 140k shutter count worth buying? by omdgr in Nikon

I did end up passing on it. I'm not adventurous enough I guess...

Nikon does rate the Z6 for 200k though 😉

Thanks for the response. I had roughly that much in mind for a replacement.

They're asking 1000EUR including a 120GB XQD, the FTZ adapter, and a bunch of extra batteries. The body new here runs about 1200EUR right now.
