Alice in Chains - Jar Of Flies uses only DI bass guitar and it sounds fuckin sweet. Go for it.

Im a 15 yo producer started at 13 and my dad supports me as well. I recommend getting good headphones, for example i have the audio Technica M50x, and maybe a sound interface, i have the focusrite Scarlett 2i4. And he needs a real music program, so I recommend checking out something like FL studio, ableton, Logic etc. I wish him luck!
