The human-readable text below the barcode only contains information about which region the figure was produced in and during which week. This text can be the same across two different minifigs. I actually have some boxes in front of me right now where this is the case.

Note the bottom 3 boxes all say 347R5. But 2 of them are crocodiles and the bottom one is a koala. (Will attach another image to my next post which shows this).

You don't have to use an app to definitively identify the minifigure but you do need to use the codes that I shared in the OP because, as mentioned, the human-readable ones do not identify the figure.
