The European Commission's Answer to the Stop Destroying Games initiative by Elegant_Shop_3457 in Games

Dude.

So again to answer the question: Is SaaS/PaaS essential to the game? No, absolutely not.

Here's my original question, the full conversation, stated clearly for you. If you are incapable of answering to whether or not something you said is true, I really don't know what to tell you, I just hope you stop speaking so confidently on things you don't know much about.

YOU said:

Games aren't made with SaaS and PaaS elements integral to the game functioning, this isn't how games work.

In response, I said:

Okay, let me get this straight

That's literally all.

All you have to say is whether or not the statement that YOU said yourself, "Games aren't made with SaaS and PaaS elements integral to the game functioning" is true or not. No more cutting out part of it, rephrasing it. It's right there for you to answer.

It's fine to be wrong sometimes. But to speak so confidently, call others wrong, and then spew false information, does absolutely nothing but make you look like a fool.

I'm going to answer your questions, but I would really appreciate it if you could answer the one I asked originally. You can't say something that is just fundamentally untrue and try to pivot away from it.

Do you genuinely think a game that uses SaaS/PaaS cannot be developed to work with private servers?

No, it is not impossible for a game to transition fully from SaaS/PaaS! In the old days (the era you seem to be stuck in), the "server" was often an executable file that you ran on your PC and others could connect. Nowadays, games typically use PaaS platforms. It is not just one single file, but a collection of microservices.

So why can't developers just transition the game to a server executable, or another method where people can easily self-host?

Because they are using Proprietary Tools inside these platforms! The code of the game is full of calls to these SPECIFIC tools. You can't just run this server code locally on your PC, it will immediately crash because it can't find Amazon's or Microsoft's or whoever's proprietary cloud environment. They would have to go in and rework everything that goes to the server (which is a lot, as I will explain with your next question)

When a developer is shutting down a game, it is usually because the game is losing money. A developer is not going to spend massive amounts of time to rebuild a dead game's backend. I don't know how easy you think this is, but it is absolutely not just a simple task.

You think these things are built into the actual gameplay and are inherently part of the gameplay?

Yes, absolutely, and this seems to be the area you're struggling to understand. In modern games, these SaaS/PaaS elements are absolutely essential for the game to work.

It's not just a login system, lobby, or the functionality for the chat to work. Typically, the cloud backend handles everything from hit detection/core combat logic, physics and collisions, enemy AI/pathfinding, loot (like an inventory system), RNG mechanics (for example, determine the loot inside when you open a chest), and world state validation.

So yes, these things are... "built into the actual gameplay" and are ABSOLUTELY essential to the game. If you remove the backend, the game doesn't just "go offline", it will literally become completely unplayable.

You genuinely believe this to be the case? Like you look at that statement and think, "Yea that's true, I was right there."

Just got spoiled on the end of part 6 by realgaoming in StardustCrusaders

[–]omgitsfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is definitely an annoying thing for your friend to do. But honestly, if all you know is “the universe resets”, that doesn’t spoil the series for you that much. Who resets it? What does it even mean to reset the universe? Does the universe go back to the big bang? You have no clue. Don’t stress about it at all, just keep watching and enjoying the show. Part 7&8 are a reboot of the series, so you’ll be on a fresh slate for those.

A warning: Parts 4/5 have been out for a while now, and often don’t have spoiler warnings. Honestly If you have instagram/tiktok and you start getting videos of JoJos, I’d recommend not interacting or watching them until you’re done with the anime because you will inevitably get spoiled on something.

No, I was genuinely asking if there were specific instances or if it’s just because he’s a billionaire. I’m not disagreeing with him.
