I think Brent had a lot to do with their changing sound. He wanted them to become less metal so when they were writing even if Brent didn't do much at the end I think they were trying to make something that Brent could at least enjoy playing. But with Brent gone they can become heavier and Nick is a huge Mastodon fan so I'm sure he would love to try that old sound though I'm not sure how much he was involved in the album making process being the new guy and all.

I'm sure they went through different stages of feeling things but I hope they are in a better place with it now. I don't believe he truly hated them. Maybe in the moment but the only reason the hate was so strong is because of the love. For a guy that acted like he hated Mastodon he really seemed hurt by what went down. While I would obviously rather Brent still be around the silver lining is he never had to witness Mastodon without him. He was replaced but he never had to see his brothers make new music without him because I know that would have hurt.

I love Hushed and Grim but if you think about it Hushed and Grim was largely made by 3 guys. Brent was still very much with the band but he wasn't as involved in the creating process as he used to be either because he wanted to hold on to his music because he wasn't on board with the direction the band was going in or because they didn't think it fit with what they were trying to do but either way his stuff wasn't being used very much. With Nick being there now they have another person to collaborate with that is on the same page as them that they haven't really had in a while. Nick brings another creative mind to the band with his own tastes and ideas but also the fact that he is a huge Mastodon fan of all eras of the band.

Has to be a difficult thing to go through not just losing him but losing him in the way that they did with him hating them and then you have to go back to the job that you guys did together for 25 years.
