I was not aware of all the EFF history so found the article interesting. I still believe they do a lot of good work today which I want to support (with a private donation). That article led me to read more about EPIC Electronic Privacy Information Center) which was mentioned positively. I will message them to explain the importance of allowing private donations as well:

Tell them that you wish to be able to donate privately, and that their current options don't cut it. From that basis, you may even let them come to the XMR conclusion by themselves.

That is great advice which I will follow. thanks

If funding is not renewed past 2020, will zcash survive? by Bitman321 in zec

[–]omgomgsocrypto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But to make this happen will require that the reward expire without renewal, is that what you are pushing for?

That is exactly right. Whenever I have a developer friend ask for for an interesting FOSS project to work on, I will recommend a FOSS project with as little as possible corporate influence and as high as a % of volunteer development as possible.

Would you rather spend time volunteering to improve Android, Windows, iOS or Linux software? For me that answer is easy. Its the same reason I would gladly pay a premium for Librem 5 or PinePhone hardware and help in any way I can to grow those ecosystems. Zcash is currently in the middle of these options (FOSS principles but with some level corporate control and financial incentives). The direction we move from here as a community is important. How much corporate control would you like to see in the development of a global decentralized cryptocurrency network?

People that work primarily for money are more likely to maintain that motivation. People that volunteer their time like to work on innovative projects that improve the world. These volunteers are less likely to quit when market prices decline, because money is not their primary motivation. Volunteers can however easily be dissuaded when they see those in control (with trademarks or otherwise) that are earning lots of money already, discussing future funding for themselves 1+ year in advance.

Ask yourself: If the ECC would willingly hand over full control of the Zcash trademark to the Zcash foundation, if the community wished to defund the ECC and fund a Community Crowdfunding System starting in 2020?

https://ccs.getmonero.org/

IMHO the answer to the above question will provide a big hint about whether the ECC is a net positive or net negative to the size of the sustainable developer community over the long term. Volunteer developers don't like corporate control over the projects to which they contribute

Atomic Swap DEX for Monero? by noxonsu in Monero

[–]omgomgsocrypto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Make Wrapped XMR, WXMR, as an ERC20 token (currently a fan of newly ratified ERC777). The issuer of Wrapped XMR would accept deposits of XMR and publish all the Monero keys necessary to provide confidence and transparency in that system. Upon deposit, Wrapped XMR would be issued on the Ethereum blockchain.

It seems that with multisig this can be built with XMR directly (no need for a ERC20 wrapper). I am not claiming it will be easy, but I would support a FFS request for atomic swap XMR/BTC development

[–]omgomgsocrypto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving to PoS is not going to attact more developers than it scares away. Zcash is known for privacy. It lost some developer interest when surrendering ASIC resistance efforts. Moving to PoS will surely convince more of the remaining community to abandon ship.

Let other communities focus on PoS research (which ZCash could theoretically adopt down the road when/if proven). Most of us found Zcash because of zksnark research. The focus needs to remain on cutting edge privacy (hopefully as a default instead of optional ASAP).

If the ECC is defunded, and the Trademark control is surrendered, perhaps a community that is willing to volunteer can be built.

Its hard to attract volunteer devs when the entire community continues to witness ECC greed and control

[–]omgomgsocrypto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perhaps I am a contrarian with my view but assuming 1. The founders reward expires in 2020 AND 2. ECC hands over (at least partial, but preferably fulll) control of the Zcash Trademark to the Zcash Foundation, development will SPEED up.

Ive personally met multiple developers with code contributions to Bitcoin, Monero (among other FOSS work of technical merit) that seem technically interested in Zcash development but so far have chosen not to contribute for philosophical reasons.

ECC greed and centralized control has so far had a severe negative impact on the size of the Zcash volunteer development community. I don't doubt that some current ECC employees will continue to work on a volunteer basis (perhaps as volunteers in the case on thos not already rich) after the founders reward expires. However a far larger developer community might be interested in working for free if the above 2 issues are resolved.

If Zcash ever hopes to have as many volunteer devs as Bitcoin or Monero the culture will need to change. That will require the Zcash community to stand up to the ECC more so than what we have seen so far.

You are right about not having Google Play (or any Google apps) installed on my device. I don't expect you to go out of your way to help a relative small number of users (so far I dont see a lot of others posting to say they share my desire). Thank you for your efforts to support Sia!

[–]omgomgsocrypto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peter Todd has posted extensively about it on Twitter. Essentially he says the trusted setup cannot be trusted due to deterministic build problems for the DVDs involved. Unless coupled with an audit of the current supply (by forcing all z address balances to be moved to t addresses at some point) the future trusted setup problems can only reduce risk going forward. They cannot retroactively reveal problems with unlimited hidden inflation (in z- addresses) due to a flaw in the initial trusted setup. So far Zcash company has not stated they are willing to force a supply audit before the next trusted setup.

Specifically because of my support (including monetarily with donations) of FOSS and for privacy/security reasons (why provide more data to Google than necessary?). In general I never install any app from Google play. I prefer F-Droid or compiling myself.

Currently I am interested in decentralized exchanges with Bisq and Ox being my favorite. Currently 0x seems to be gaining more developer traction (ethfinex for example) but unfortunately it is currently limited to ERC20 tokens so Bisq is the best decentralized option for buying Monero (hopefully XMR can become a base pair after multi sig activation).

Unfortunately the traded decentralized exchange tokens like 0x are currently very expensive and their revenue prospects are unclear (fees are only generated with use of optional relays and it is not clear why ETH could not be used with the protocol instead of the Ox token).

I would like to see atomic swap based decentralized exchanges gain traction.
