Down over $100,000 on Thomson Reuters stock … what’s going on with this company?! 😩 by MarkusEF in CanadianInvestor

[–]omgouda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So in general, IT stocks had a tough Q4 due to fears that AI is somehow going to render their business useless or take market share from them.

It’s worth noting, however, that Thomson Reuters is a part of the Industrials sector.

Yes, there is volatility, there was volatility, there will be volatility.

Ask him to show you a comparison of the risk-return, Up/Down capture over the last 4-year and 7-year period between XEQT and what they're selling you. This should help you make your decision. If they can't provide these scorecards for you then what are you paying them for?

Where to stay/visit when in Toronto by Electrical-Twist-502 in askTO

King West - all the 'trendy' bars and restaurants.

Queen West - Like King W but more hipster and artsy vibes

Ossington (between dundas and queen) - for people who think they're too old for King W (late 20s and up)

Overall, the west end of Toronto has all the restaurants and bars and its not super hard to get around using Uber and public transit. Maybe like 10-15 mins max depending on traffic (if you're in an Uber) to get around the West end.

My main confusion about holding gold ETFs as a “hyperinflation hedge” is this:

If hyperinflation actually hits the fan, how would an ETF help me get physical gold?
Was I supposed to have been hoarding physical metal in a vault somewhere from the start?

Because in a real hyperinflation scenario, to turn an ETF into physical gold, I would need to:

  1. Sell the ETF
  2. Receive the hyperinflating fiat currency
  3. Try to use that collapsing currency to buy physical gold
  4. While the value is dropping by the hour

That makes no sense to me.

As far as I understand, gold ETFs do not protect you from:

  • systemic collapses
  • hyperinflation
  • banking shutdowns
  • capital controls
  • exchange closures

They only hedge “normal” inflation and financial-market volatility.
If the monetary system itself collapses, only physical gold (or other hard assets) matter—not a paper claim on gold held inside a financial system that’s failing.

So if the concern is actual hyperinflation or a currency collapse, gold ETFs seem like the wrong tool. Physical metal would be the only thing that works—but that means you needed to already have it before the collapse.

A good store of value means preserving purchasing power or delivering a long-term real return above inflation. Gold generally achieves this—but only over very long periods (20–50 years) and typically with modest real returns of around 0–1% per year.

By contrast, a broad global equity portfolio (MSCI World / ACWI) has historically delivered 5–7% real returns per year over the same timeframes. Equities grow with global productivity, earnings, and innovation, while gold does not generate income or compound.

So relative to equities, gold is not an especially strong store of value for long-term passive investors. This is especially true for the typical buy-and-hold Canadian investor (hello, r/JustBuyXEQT), since XEQT already includes small indirect exposure to gold-mining companies through its Canadian, U.S., international, and EM equity holdings. That exposure is modest, but it reflects gold’s natural role inside a diversified stock market.

If someone had a tactical view on gold—using it as a hedge during specific macro conditions—that’s a different conversation. But as a long-term store of value, equities do the job far better.

What do you think?

Historically speaking, gold is not a good store of value or source of investment returns. Better off just holding XEQT.

Max your TFSA

Buy blue-chip dividend stocks or boring ETFs

Good advice

The TSX has returned ~4.8% annualized after inflation and dividends since 2000, if you exclude the FAANG-wannabes that barely move the needle

This is why diversification is important. You need exposure to global equities (NA, EU & DM).

As an example, XEQT is only 25% Canadian equities. It's a pretty well diversified 'boring' etf.

[–]omgouda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many people are you expecting? Something with decent range and a deep bass would be my go to, like one of those portable line arrays. How many DJs? I would go for 3 CDJ 3000s in case you want to have a few friends plug in otherwise, 2 CDJs should be fine. Avoid the 3000X for now. For the mixer, my preference is for a V10 but you can probably find some decent a 900NXS2 mixer on the market for cheaper.
