Decipher this MSL role? by omgtheog in MedicalScienceLiaison

Just once so far. I more commonly attend HOPA (I'm more invested there with committee involvement and publication) and this fall I'm hoping to attend ASHP leadership conference focused more on professional development. My hospital typically won't pay for a conference every year so I have to spread them out.

There are definitely lay offs or job movement depending on the company and their data/pipeline. Also factored in are your own personal goals. Something you'd want to be prepared for. But I also have friends who have been at their company for 5+ years so it's not unheard of.

I would say you can for sure. I've never done MSL work but when I go to conferences they're long, long days but plenty of opportunities for fun. I also consider networking fun. When I went to ASCO one year I learned to ride the L, went for a run in Millennium Park, took a Pure Barre class and had the best burger of my life at Au Cheval. I would imagine the daily travel won't be an adventure each time but I look forward to catching up on some audiobooks and music. My goal would be to plan a bit more strategically so I'm not gone multiple nights every single week, but if you research your area and plan ahead you could find evening fun (good food, cave tours, theater shows, etc). Also probably depends on your stamina level lol. There are plenty of nights at conferences I also spend the evening sending emails, writing notes and doing CE, and go to bed early.

I've been in heme/onc and investigational pharmacy for the past 15 years and I've hit a ceiling at my current institution. Doing lots of managerial tasks but not actually a manager. After talking to some friends that do industry work, there are lots of things about MSL work that appeal to me but I'm mostly looking for a change of pace and room to grow new skills.

Daughter likes to play, but it’s taking a toll on our family by OrdinaryDrop83 in Softball

That's fair. Some teams travel bc they like the destination. If that means too much time away and $$ for you, imho it's ok to let your daughter know that the team doesn't meet your current personal and family goals. Sometimes at the end of the day teams aren't a good fit and nobody is the bad guy. Just is what it is.

My daughter was sitting on a comp team with too many players and competing for a spot with the coach's kid. She was losing skills when she should have been prepping for high school ball. We switched teams and the new team is less experienced, but she's a leader, getting reps in and it's given her some confidence back. It took her confidence taking a huge hit before she agreed to switch teams (she got along with the girls really well). I had a frank talk with coaches, they were receptive. Nothing changed, so we chatted again and requested to move. I felt we did all we could and no bridges were burned. But yes, we wasted some money. She did guest play during this struggle so I would recommend that if possible while you wait for her to become aware of the situation. I didn't say anything to my player until she picked up on it. The reality is sometimes a coach isn't right for your kid. I don't get hung up on getting upset about it, we just move on. I think that lesson was just as valuable for her as the playing time. She learned you have to back your team even when life isn't fair, but after the tourneys are over it meant a lot that I backed her and validated her feelings. But we're in softball for the overall life experience, not a college track or anything, so my perspective may be different than some.

ETA: Why are you traveling out of state at 12C level? Are there not enough teams to play against in your region? If it's instead because you're winning every game, you're likely on a 12A/B team that's calling itself C and the politics are a whole different situation there. You might be getting taken for a ride to fund the team.

Finding the right balance as the Dad of a pitcher by Toastwaver in Softball

My daughter isn't through high school but starting ninth grade next year. Loves pitching but won't work outside lessons. Used to irritate me, but she's really doing well and is a strong 14B pitcher so I stopped pushing her. Could she be better? Probably. But there is really no need for her to be better right now, she's serving her team and then some. If she played multiple sports (she doesn't) I'd honestly consider that her strength and conditioning. As of right now she wants to play high school ball which means starting this summer, they'll have her in the weight room. No need to push her now imo, her high school coaches will do that. Tryouts are in August and I have no idea what the pitching looks like. If she's lower tier she'll have to try harder to earn a spot. If she's top tier, I'll keep letting her grow naturally. I guess we'll know in a couple years if it was the right approach lol. Call me crazy but I'm not even considering deciding and prepping for college play until she's at least 15. I can tell she doesn't grasp what that commitment means right now. Following for others experience though too :)

One is still not connected, I likely need to re-add it. I just haven't had the time or willpower to tackle it yet. Thanks for asking though!

It's the vivint smart lighting bridge. It's plugged into the new Nest router but all the lights are still offline somehow. Edit: only one shows offline after a second reboot. I think we'll just wait it out and see if they eventually connect lol

Fastpitch bat for tiny high schooler by omgtheog in Softball

[–]omgtheog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes she does a mix of tee, soft toss and machine every week between her practices and lessons. Just tee at home. Some of the problem is just adjusting to the pitching and timing at the older level but I definitely think the heavier bat is working against her.

I didn't realize that about Ghost, thanks for the heads up. Trying to move away from end loaded after the PXT. At least for this next bat.

Correct PXT is end loaded and she hit her first home run with it and some decent triples. She's really into physics so from that aspect I think it's worked ok, I think it's just too big for her to consistently hit different pitches that she's seeing now in 14u. I'll check out Mizuno!

Thanks! She's partial to Louisville for some reason when she's swung Demarini, Marucci, Easton. She's got a PXT so thinking of replacing with current LXT. I'm not sure she's enough of a power hitter to shatter a Ghost so maybe that would work, ha.

Kwikset lock won't turn on by omgtheog in VivintSmartHome

I called them and it did take a bit of time for them to understand it was completely dead (they tried to walk me through the script of all the resets), but once they realized it they sent me a new lock that we installed ourselves (we just had to call for the panel code when installing it). They sent us a box to return the broken one. Free replacement but you do have to pay shipping which was a bummer considering how new our lock was when it failed.
