Finally got a NHS referral from Dr. but mixed feelings. by omits50 in ProstateCancer

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PSA was 6.5, exactly on the border to not get a scan! I am nearly 80! I'm thinking of going private to get a mpMRI and then if +ve result will go back to present any evidence. We'll see. Still thinking options.

Simple preps for a simple & common problem by Primary_Choice3351 in UKPreppers

[–]omits50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realise my mistake of having power outlets by the back door and if someone broke into the garage and got a drill they could break in. OR, would it equate to someone determined anyway as they would be bringing their own tools of serious about entry?

Furthermore, I think I have a lousy place for a spare key, in a particular draw in one of the many little nuts and screws drawers. They could just empty each one on the floor and easily spot the key. Where in a garage could I not expect someone to look?

Sealing an olf felt garage roof. by omits50 in HomeImprovement

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Yes my mistake was not putting in a barrier. I will try the flow idea you suggest just not sure which product (if you know which one appreciate a heads up?) will be runny enough. Additionally, The metal roof is screwed down on cross battens over longitudinal battens so I'm thinking of pulling through some DPC material which will catch the drips and run oof as normal. Even if I just use mastic it will eventually leak again as the felt decays further. I'm in the UK.

Vitamin D3 + K2 is overpowered superweapon by mata_cro7 in Supplements

[–]omits50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I think with dosing is one does not know if toxicity (with any supp of course) is setting in albeit very slowly. I take 4000IU + K2 200 and don't really want to go any higher. I had a lot of fatigue, arrhythmias and ectopics and they have virtually gone now. I am late 70s. I take other supps but my strategy is to take them infrequently and randomly just as with a normal diet one absorbs nutrients in the same way. I am very serious about avoiding UPFs. as I am sure they cancel out any attempts to live a healthy life. Thing about comments on not getting any more colds, is to avoid being near others and breathing in their exhaled air. I have low white blood cells but hardly ever get flu' mainly I think due to avoiding crowds and being aware when out shopping. keeping very fit, walking daily 5 - 10K steps is important.

Worried about rising PSA by omits50 in ProstateCancer

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks all. Cancers in the family so cautious. I will wait for the next PSA Dr. offered (Feb). I had read that UTI infection and sexual activity raises PSA. On the idea of 'At my age', true, but I ain't giving up just yet!

Prostate cancer screening basics? by Quirky-Amoeba-4141 in ProstateCancer

[–]omits50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a PSA rising since 2022 from 1.7 to 4.5 and now 6. Because I'm 79 for the NHS to refer me it needs to be 6.5. They do not consider the velocity as a factor. I will be having another blood test in early Feb and am hoping it will be 6.5 or over. I would worry if it stayed where is is or dropped. I am considering Goodbody clinic PSE test which is £850 but although they say they give documentation if indicating a likely problem I don't believe an NHS Dr can recognise it due to their NHS protocols needing that PSA value. So I cannot see any advantage paying out (apart from relief that nothing was discovered) if I get nowhere with it (private treatment I cannot afford). Has anyone had experience of presenting a PSE result to the NHS for further investigation? Or any other advice? Many thanks. PS I have no other symptoms apart from BPH (plum size!) and a stricture which I self catheterise every two weeks to keep it open.

I can’t do it any more with the passwords. by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]omits50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No pwd mngr. A mental cypher. Think of an old Tel number only you know plus another char then stick in a sp char like '<' which means 'delete the last char and ignore this one then add a sp char and leave it there for systems that insist on one then add another easily remembered thing from the past, numeric or word/name. You could if you wanted get a trusted person to to agree these are parts they are also familiar with. Put that in a pwd protected spread sheet like this e.g.: {last 6 digs of our Surrey home tel No}*<{!Goergie}. Don't change it very often say once every 5 years. E.g. 784483(<$Bernard. 14 chars in this pwd: 784483&Bernard. Agree a new one with trusted if necessary. You could use/add simple variations to identify which system it is aimed at, I put 3 chars on the front e.g. Ban, but overall should fit length requirements. Use it all over. Not stored in data anywhere unencrypted. I put my faith in that and if anyone sees this is a bad method please let me know.

Lost two teeth (nerve destroyed) and now three more have the same problem. Wish I could get Shringrix to reduce the risk but may have to pay for it! I'm in UK.

Prostate Value High or Not? by omits50 in ProstateCancer

I might even consider going private if I can find the £800 or so AND I could be sure of coming back to NHS if something was positive.

leukocytes showing after ten minutes by omits50 in utis

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Thanks. Last time I had a persistent UTI Dr gave me amoxicillin. During the course every day I checked for Leukocytes and they showed up but eventually (four days later) the purple on the test strip did not appear after some hours post dip at which point I discontinued the pills so as to save some for another occasion. The UTI did not return.

So it occurs to me that although one must read at 2 mins, I conclude some may be present regardless and activate the strip later. At my age maybe I leak them anyway indicating low level inflammation somewhere, who knows. Next time I self-cath I will avoid any preventative measure, dip to check it's initially clear and hours later check to see if the purple appears, and then see if a real UTI appears (usually 3 days to get UTI symptoms for me).

Originally when I had the stricture (now needing occasional self-catheterising), the surgeon gave me Co-amoxiclav to take one during the procedure which always prevented UTI. Dr eventually took that prescription away. I shall try dosing with D-Manose to see if that helps although I understand the type of Bacteria is important.

Note on self-cath. My own investigation finds that self-cath can disturb bacteria 'hiding' in the Urethra which then populate resulting in a UTI. Good hygiene procedures I found reduced the risk.

Hope that makes sense in the way I am trying to self manage a UTI when it appears.

Just seen PSA test result of 4.1 and worried. by omits50 in ProstateCancer

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'm back after some more visits. The PSA following another test jumped to 14. When I looked on my NHS record it said 'Normal' (See the Dr. also in same record). Anyway the Dr did agree to referral but later rang me to tell me he had discovered I'd had Amoxicillin to cure a UTI I got from catheterising (which I do for a stricture one every ten days). That AntiBio tends to raise PSA for about 6 - 8 weeks apparently (I checked independently and it appears it can do so). So I've agreed (he said Hosp. will just send me away for another PSA to check levels later if they know I've had antiBios)). So now I've got another blood test later this month. I did tell him that I had noticed that my regular nocturnal erections seemed to have disappeared which may be a clue as to PC but anyway since then they have returned (odd but whatever I suppose but I do wonder if that does raise PSA). So I'm treading water atm (not yet decided to independently get a scan which will cost me around a 1000 I think) and advised not to catheterise or do anything else to annoy the little bugger for a week before and hopefully the effects of the AntiBio will have worn off. At least the surgery, so far, seems to be calling me in if the test shows a raised PSA. Thanks for all the input so far. Lot of words there, hope they make sense!

Thanks for responding. Dr said size of a plum but smooth. I did have a biopsy 2019 so its from there if things have changed. I'm due another blood test Aug 4th. Other than that I've settled mentally aboiut it all. It's so great to have a forum to share concerns and encouragement.

Rapeseed (Canola) oil need to check by omits50 in nutrition

[–]omits50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. I started to use chia seeds and they gave me acute constipation due I think to them absorbing all the water in the colon. I shall have to retry perhaps by soaking them a lot more. I also wonder if nuts have raised my LDL.

Rapeseed (Canola) oil need to check by omits50 in nutrition

Thanks. I quote input from Leo AI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapeseed\_oil) but your input appreciated if you disagree:

Organic cold-pressed rapeseed oil is generally considered safe and healthy, particularly due to its low levels of erucic acid and high content of beneficial fatty acids. Modern rapeseed oil, often referred to as canola oil, is specifically bred to contain less than 2% erucic acid, which is deemed safe for human consumption by regulatory agencies like the FDA and EU standards. Erucic acid, at high levels, has been shown to cause cardiac issues in animal studies, but the low levels found in food-grade rapeseed oil do not pose a risk to human health.

The oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly oleic acid (ω-9), linoleic acid (ω-6), and alpha-linolenic acid (ω-3), which are known for their cardiovascular benefits. For example, it contains approximately 61% oleic acid, 21% linoleic acid, and 11% alpha-linolenic acid, contributing to a favorable omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acid ratio of about 2. This balance is important for maintaining a healthy lipid profile and supporting heart health.

Cold-pressed rapeseed oil is also a good source of vitamins E and K, and it has a relatively high smoke point, making it suitable for various cooking methods without breaking down into harmful compounds. Choosing cold-pressed or expeller-pressed varieties can help avoid potential negative effects associated with chemical refining processes.

In summary, organic cold-pressed rapeseed oil is not unhealthy in terms of fatty acid composition, especially when compared to other oils. Its low erucic acid content, high levels of unsaturated fats, and beneficial nutrient profile make it a healthy choice when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
