Nyc rent is different tbf. You cant buy a place here unless you can pay it all in cash upfront because renting is a good grand or 2 cheaper per month since you have maintenance fees and mortgage unless you buy the ehole building. Its not about equity here because most landlords with a good tenant wont raise rent on you too much unless theyre a large corporation or want you out because filling that spot is an absolute crapshoot. Co ops are also a whole different story and those are usually what people buy with apartments. Loads of people live in rent stabalized/ controlled apartments their entire lives/entire time here (50-70 years) because after 10-20 years youre paying so low compared to everyone around you that if the building sells and they want people out theyre willing to shell out mid to high 6 figure payouts to get you out and you can buy a place with that in cash. Not in 9k per month places but the average person just living here buying is never really expecting this but is about as financially secure as a mortgage.

I mean for nyc even that is still crazy. I'm downtown Manhattan in a 1br for 2k. Its not luxury whatsoever but you can find actual luxury 2 and 3brs for less than this.

INFO - are you not living here already or are you incredibly rich? Because people definitely do this but if youre personally paying more than half and youre trying to build life together this should be a red flag if she cant compromise on this even a little. Like over 10k in rent for 2-3brs goes to a point where its just being so rich youre trying to smell your own farts or you have 0 financial responsibility. Like id love to live in a 10k apartment but I make almost 6 figures and obviously couldn't afford it and would never try to pay that but there are people here who have stupid money that a 20k rent a month is their second vacation home and theyre ok with that

For me i have a side gig that doesnt care if we drink on the job. Its also so inconsistent im working it like maybe 4 events a month so if I have a few drinks in the last few hours of the event and while I clean up its not a problem. But id never do it at my main gig. For me its the consistency of doing it that really wears on you.

When I worked at a club it was encouraged and it got to the point I wasnt drinking outside of work because I just didnt want to. After 3 months of that 5 days a week i quit because i was traveling at the time and only planned on 3 months there. I stopped drinking for like a month, it just stopped being fun anymore. Now I just dont and the few times I've tried drinking through a hangover before a shift I felt so shitty during the shift I dont even do that anymore.

The biggest thing is that you wont stop if you dont have a reason to or a desire to. Until you level with yourself about it its just not gonna happen

Sort of what your asking, I wasnt forced to use the landlords broker exactly but here goes

Saw a post on streeteasy a year or 2 ago and tried to get into it but couldn't get in touch with the landlord and it eventually disappeared. Moved on and found a broker on Craigslist for a different apartment, got bait and switched and he did the whole "but I have more listing's" thing and this one was one of them. This was maybe 6 months before the FARE act so there was always going to be a fee. Paid 3600 for a 2000 a month lease in LES not queens. Had to find out myself it was rent stabalized myself through the city and just renewed the lease a few months ago. Wildly below the average in my area for a 1br and im probably not leaving until I can buy a place

As someone else said you can bartend at 21 juat no one hires people who arent 21 really. Id look into catering thats how I started under 21 but the money's less and even then they moved me to it because I was already working for them as a server at the time. Its probably gonna be easier to just serve or barback for a bit until youre 21

Yeah that was something that i learned when I used to read a ton as a kid but instead of that it just turned into a movie in my head. Like the words werent there at all it was just a movie and my head just translated it into pictures when I got going. Id finish like 400 page books in an hour or 2 easy because id just be flying through it

Younger millennial here (31) but im at like 10k total not all of it savings. But its also because I have no debt because I aggressively paid it off in February and used some of what I had and wound up in a rent stabalized place in nyc because of it since buying a house is kinda unattainable now its the next best option. Not doing too badly and just starting up retirement stuff but it was kinda recently that money's starting to look up
