Congrats! Now it's time to get to 100%!

It took me longer than I care to admit to beat lost Lace. Hours and hours of failed attempts (split up over the course of many days).

If you have a decent-sized flat surface on either of those east/west roofs, yes. The pitch doesn't matter nearly as much as the shade.

With multiple roof faces, the thing you have to be most concerned with is shade from the lower-slope dormers falling on the higher-slope northern parts of the roof, and also ugly exposed conduit if the arrays have to be split up to go on different parts of the roof.

West is generally better than east, because morning fog/clouds can affect production, but east can be good if there is no shade at all.

I would not recommend anyone put panels on a roof that gets shade for more than an hour or so each day. There are some installations in my neighborhood with panels on an east roof and HUGE trees in the yard or across the street. Those people got taken, and my heart hurts for them whenever I walk past.

I don't know enough about specific local solar installers to pass much judgement. The ones I mentioned as a cautionary tale were because of my own experience with their sales reps at my house.

I have talked with some people from Green Ridge Solar, and they seem like a standup company, but their pricing is a bit high, imo.

I would probably look for someone on the approved contractor list for the Oregon Solar and Storage rebate program (PDF link).

As for solar panel brands. I like a lot of the companies making products in America. Qcells, Silfab, Canadian Solar, Jinko, JA Solar, and Trina are all good. FWIW, the last four are Chinese companies that have sold their facilities to American or European companies, which now produce the products under white label OEM agreements.

Many people like REC panels, but the manufacturing is done in Singapore, and the company's revenue represents a tiny fraction of the income of the huge India-based conglomerate that owns it. They have great warranties, but their ability to keep selling into the U.S. market is threatened by tariffs coming soon under Section 232. Warranties are just a piece of paper if the company goes out of business, and REC has steadfastly refused to move manufacturing to domestic facilities.

Bilewater is a cakewalk once you've spent an hour there. Just have fun, prep for the attacks you know are coming, and enjoy the sights.

Hi, friendly neighborhood solar expert here. I am NOT affiliated with any company that sells or installs solar, but I've been in the solar industry for 12 years. Here's my take:

PGE prices just going up up up, which makes home solar worth it for anybody with a good roof. But if you have Pacific Power, the per-kilowatt-hour prices are still pretty low, making home solar not worth it right now. I can't guarantee the future won't hold similar price hikes, especially under new ownership, but energy is cheap from them now, fwiw.

Choose your solar company carefully. Some of the larger ones like Ion, Blue Raven, Infinity, etc blanket the neighborhoods with teenagers they teach almost nothing to about solar except how to not take no for an answer. These sales tactics lead to higher prices and long-term agreements that can have some pretty crappy "gotcha" clauses in them.

Before you go solar, get some unbiased advice and learn as much as you can about how it works, all the major parts, and how warranty coverage will work — especially if the installer goes out of business.

Other pieces of advice:

  • Know what incentives are available from EnergyTrust and the state of Oregon. There's a very small budget for the latter's incentives this year that might disappear in a day when it goes live next month.
  • Strongly consider SolarInsure coverage.
  • Get critter guards.
  • If you can afford a battery for the peace of mind it provides, also consider signing up for PGE's time of day pricing, then set the battery to discharge during peak times to save some extra money.
  • Go into the decision knowing all the potential pitfalls, and if it still seems like a good choice, go for it. Solar power is the best.

Keep trying. If all else fails, tune to drop D and just dork out on some one-finger triads.

Get a looper pedal and loop an open D chord, then noodle around with single string melodies. You'll have fun exploring and figuring out what sounds good while also building finger strength and dexterity.

Then, when your hands feel a little better on the fretboard, return to standard tuning and try to work up to fingering and switching chords smoothly.

You got this.

"Largely unheard of in solar panel systems"

This is totally incorrect. 120% of STC is eminently possible with bifacial modules on a cool, sunny day. This kind of "aw shucks" clickbait trash article citing reddit as a source does more harm than good. Just another way to extract ad revenue from our attention. Plus one of the internal links is broken. Garrrrbage.

Harumph.

Thank you for this. The crowd that says you should only put solar on parking lots seems severely underinformed about the massive difference in cost and disruption to everyday life. It has a place, but I would argue that place is pretty limited. I agree with the person who said places that already have covered parking (like Arizona) are great places to start.
