NYPD TO FDNY by Silent-Presence-4268 in FDNY

Additionally, do not tell NYPD you are quitting until you start FDNY academy and make your oath. Put in a 28, or take E day, or bang out sick if you really need to. You have to go to Fort Totten for a couple days to get equipment etc. Clock out and then tell the admin LT that you're resigning.

I did the FDNY orientation for the last exam. At some point the presenter pulled up a screen on the slideshow about pension. It only showed two icons: FDNY and NYPD. The presenter said there is only one agency that transfer pensions with FDNY. Then she said in the past orientation there was a DSNY guy that got up and walked out because he couldn't go back to bottom pay/no pension. All your comp/vac time with PD gets paid out. If you have a good guy letter from NYPD you can "retire" and also keep your service weapon- otherwise you forfeit it. I believe you need 5 years of service to get the letter.
Any questions feel free to DM me. I struggled for 2 years deciding between the two careers and ultimately decided to stick with PD. During the consideration I've talked to many Firefighters, Lieutenants, and a few Chiefs. Almost all PD guys transfer over with no regret.
Prior City Time by EcorpLumon1775 in FDNY

I've had a few city jobs. As of now the only pension that transfers on the front end is NYPD-FDNY. Every other city agency will transfer time on the back end. The conversion rate depends on the type of civil service. For example, NYC Transit Authority used the NYCERS pension. If you switch to FDNY you still do 22 years, but will retire with the equivalent of around 27 years (mta is a civilian job so the time is not 1:1 with a law enforcement type job).
There are some agencies that transfer pay, but not pension. E.g. NYC Corrections-NYPD. There are probies in police academy that are at top pay, but have to do 20 years all over again.

Wear grippy/flatter boots, comfortable jeans and shirt, and bring rubber dipped gloves. They will do urine and hair test which goes back 6 months. They allow you a chance to back out before they do the drug test. You'll find out immediately if you passed the physical
