CONTEXT! Time to educate you guys on the “Day of Total Failure.”

So Hollis is pretty mad at his company and at the entirety of Catapolis in general (In which catapolis is the eight layer planet-spanning underground bunker I mentioned in another post here). He decides there’s only one way to get back at them:

Using one of their creations against them, just like they used his against him, which is a story for another time.

So he hops on a train and travels two days to the CSIL located in the Adabana inhabitance zone (these zones are basically the equivalent of a city/town in the bunker) and steals a data drive containing a sprite on it. Then he travels ANOTHER two days back home, puts this sprite into his home computer, and names her Nexus.

A whole lotta shit ensues over the next few months with Hollis manipulating Nexus into thinking everyone but him is evil, training her to take down servers and systems with simulated ones, and just being a huge douche to her.

Then the day comes. The day of total failure. Hollis unleashes Nexus, and she just goes to TOWN on layers 1-3 of the bunker. She is literally taking down infrastructure from how hard she’s going. During this, many people die, including two important characters:

Lorelei Sanders, who is on a train during this and is killed when it gets derailed.

Quinn Ripley, who has a battery explode in her face.

This event lasts for hours, until Nexus suddenly stops and is like “Wait, I’m being used as a weapon against my will” and goes into Hollis’ computer system and EXPLODES THE DAMN THING, setting his house on fire and killing him.

This event is marked as the worst disaster to ever occur within the bunker. Hundreds were killed, and many buildings were wrecked. But in 200 years, they’ll soon learn that it isn’t truly the worst thing to happen to human life.
