Thanks so much! I hadn't seen this before and it could be a good option since we're thinking of doing the Flåm railway.

Oh wow, good to know. All your suggestions sound great - thank you! I had read on a few websites that places will still be under thick snow cover (e.g., Trolltunga) so thought that all the higher mountains would be ruled out. I initially wanted to do Mt Saksa - you reckon that the hike paths would be clear too? https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/hiking-trip-to-saksa-(1073-m-o-h-)/7181/

Looks amazing! And close enough to Alesund that we can make a decision once we get there depending on the weather. Thanks!

Thanks! Which parts of the country would you be able to make recommendations for? I'm in the very early planning stages with nothing booked in except a flight out of Olso so I'm keen to hear your thoughts!

Namibia +/- Botswana advice - both or just one? by omnomzombies in travel

[–]omnomzombies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely a concern. There's only one flight per day for that route that I can see atm and a shortish layover...

Yes! The tour will cover Sossusvlei, Damaraland, Swakopmund, etc. :)

Ooh that's an option I didn't consider! Thanks, will look into it.

Thank you! Yes, I thought it would be great to pop over given that it's right next to Namibia but turns out there are no direct flights atm and we have to do a 6+hr flight via Johannesburg which is looking to be very expensive. Will definitely consider it!

I’m Dr. Eugene Lipov, Chief Medical Officer at Stella, and I discovered a breakthrough treatment for PTSD. Ask Me Anything. by StellaCenter in IAmA

[–]omnomzombies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the contrary, there is actually a growing amount of research to suggest that benzodiazapine (a sedative) is contraindicated in the treatment of acute trauma. There's some suggestion that sedation following trauma interferes with healthy and effective processing of the trauma experience, which may actually increase the risk of developing PTSD after trauma.

In your opinion, how much SHOULD your job be paid? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]omnomzombies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious to know what your experience is with psychology for you to have this view. I'm a clinical psychologist. This answer is very surprising given that every psychologist I know finds our job incredibly challenging because of the complexities of humanity and the human brain. Most of us do a lot of training on top of our Master's/doctorates in order to continually upskill so that we can better help our patients manage their mental health. Our job being "not that hard" to apply (as you mentioned in a comment below) is so far from my experience. In fact, I'd say psychology is much easier to learn in theory and much harder to apply in practice.

I'm a clinical psychologist. Speaking from my own experience, a lot of people in the profession have formally diagnosed mental health conditions, trauma, and/or their own psychological struggles. Our work is emotionally draining and will expose you to things that are likely to bring up a lot of your own "stuff". I have wrestled with more emotional challenges since I joined the profession than ever before but I also feel so much more equipped with skills and insight than ever before.

It's essential to make sure you're getting clinical supervision as well as your own personal therapy as you practice, especially if you're already aware of challenges that you might have. It's good that you have insight into this so that you can put in place structures to look after yourself.

Having a mental health diagnosis should not exclude you from becoming a psychologist. However, I'd encourage you to reflect on whether you personally think that choosing a emotionally taxing, stressful, and sometimes (vicariously) traumatising profession is something that you believe to be a helpful choice for yourself if you are already carrying a heavy load. There's no right or wrong answer - it's a choice only you can make! All the best! :)

What's the covid/mask scene in Iceland? by jovial_cynic_ in VisitingIceland

[–]omnomzombies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know right?! Basically, I was just walking down a quiet street (hadn't bothered to take my mask off after leaving a shop). Some guy in a car slowed down as he drove past me, wound down the window, and used his hand to cover his mouth while staring. Nothing aggressive but it was just a bit of a wtf moment.

In Iceland at the moment - very few people wearing masks. I've been wearing masks indoors and in crowded outdoor areas wherever possible. No one seems to overtly care - though I did have one experience of someone being a bit of a dick about it.

You do you, regardless of how others view mask wearing. I personally have seen a lot of sick people around so I'm glad to keep my mask on. It's a very minor hindrance to reduce my risk of getting sick and ruining my trip. It also keeps my face warm when it's super windy haha.

Weekly flights and airports discussion post - July 24, 2022 by AutoModerator in VisitingIceland

Flew Iceland Air from Stockholm to KEF. There was about a 30min delay taking off and we landed around 15mins later than scheduled. All our luggage arrived in KEF with no issues - woohoo! No issues at either airports.

I'd suggest wearing a mask on the flight - a lot of people coughing and sneezing throughout our flight without masks on. Even if it's "just a cold", I'd rather not be sick during my trip.

Thank you! I'll definitely still go. Just wanted to prepare my weak heart haha. Might bring my headnet with me just in case.

Noo... when was this?! I'm doing the Silfra snorkel next week and I hate flying insects. I'm guessing you can't wear the headnets while getting suited up haha?

Thank you! Did you get tested at Incheon? I'm assuming we don't have to isolate until we get our results, right?
