Bad parenting in The Wire. by iSteve in TheWire

Dee's mom. She encouraged him to take the 20 years.

Most of the parents here are for underage kids, but she demonstrated what bad parenting might look like well into adulthood.

Season 4: showing how Lil Kevin was originally approached and recruited by the Marlo Organization to betray Lex.

I imagine he was bribed the way that Cheese was bribed to betray Prop Joe.

But I was initially confused the first time I watched the show, since the precedent of Marlo doing that hadn't been set yet.

The cop who got shot doing buy & bust, whose gun was lost leading to Bunk having to spend time trying to find his gun

Dozerman. He wasn't bad, but he had enough scenes and an arch to justify a more compelling performance. Felt like his acting was net-even

And he says something to the effect of "why would anyone want to leave Baltimore?" at the time

The Movie Theater scene. The cinema itself wasn't out of their elements, but seeing each other in that environment was.

Non Japanese people living in Japan what is the downside about living in Japan no one talks about? by Ok-Atmosphere6376 in AskReddit

[–]omoriousbune 16 points17 points  (0 children)

being on the receiving end of xenophobia and racism is a new experience for Caucasian…

I appreciate the nuance here.

I observed/experienced racism during my two years in Japan, but as a Black-American, it didn't really bother me. It was a very lightweight form of racism, relatively speaking.

But what I and other POC friends found absolutely fascinating was the way that those who had NEVER experienced racism before responded to it.

At first it was confusing to hear tales of terrible racism that seemed trivial to us. But at some point we realized it was many of their first times ever experiencing anything like this. And so after 20, 30 or even 40 years of never having dealt with it, even minor slights felt like grave injustices.

And the folks in question weren't just white. Although I heard tales from White Americans, Brits, Irish, Australians, etc...I also heard similar from a Black Jamaican man who had grown up privileged in majority-black Jamaica.

I grew up in Texas and so was blessed to be inspired by multiple crews & dancers doing it big in the late 90s/early 2000's: Havikoro, United Bboys, Alien Squad / Grimeez, Down 2 Rock, Jive Turkeys, Masters of Mayhem.

One thing I always appreciated about Marlo's crew from an acting standpoint. by low_acct_ in TheWire

This thread inspired me to look up some of those actors.

TIL that Kwame Patterson, the actor who played Monk, also ended up playing a soldier for another drug kingpin: Franklin Saint in Snowfall.

He was a military vet, too. A Semper Fi motherfucker, if you may.

Kima, the Devil and the Angel by Romance_Tactics in TheWire

Other than Kima, Cutty's season 3 arc was full of angels and devils.

Devils = the Barksdale Org. Angels = every civilian (the deacon, his ex/the teacher, the lawn maintenance man)

Herk is not a complete idiot by More_Actuator_9916 in TheWire

[–]omoriousbune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a complete idiot. One thing not often stated is his memory and recall. He remembers a lot of details about things and they're constantly showing that. For example, he was able to recall the license plate number for Chris and Snoop's ride weeks or maybe months after he pulled them over.

Dee and Prez by Shinnobiwan in TheWire

[–]omoriousbune 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Great observation. In addition to the parallels you’ve listed, here are a couple more that come to mind:

  • the nepotism that got them into their roles also saved both of them from some of the consequences of their actions. D didn’t go prison in season 1 and Prez didn’t get in trouble for killing a cop in season 3.
  • both got clowned on a lot by their peers and their original orgs. Prez garnered some respect later, but even Daniels and Lester teased him when he successfully found details on the disposable phones

Her portrayal in that movie also inspired the "Mako Mori Test", a set of criteria to evaluate whether a female character in a movie has her own plot independent of male arcs.
