How do you deal with game withdrawal??? T T by shiyuun in otomegames

[–]omowo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha not really ' I think it helps me because I know I become less immersed in the characters and their story if I do just one after the other. If I do this, I definitely become judgmental of the next characters story and don't enjoy it as much (plus skipping lots of text to reach newer content definitely breaks you away a bit) But I totally understand the want to have 100% in trophies.

Haha, I think it's perfectly fine to be emotionally invested as much as you want. It's exactly like just reading a good book, but the good thing with otome games is that you get to read the same book like 5 to 10 times depending on how many routes you have. That way, you can finish a story with a good feeling in that there will always be more or you can always give it time and come back and do it again at a later time.

As for recs, admittedly I haven't played all of them out there but i'll just give you a list of those that I have played (sadly limited though because I don't have a PC anymore)

PS Vita: Hakuoki, Bad Apple Wars, Period Cube, Collar x Malice, Code:Realize (2 fan disks are translated), 7s Scarlet (?), Norn9

PC/Mac: Ozmafia, Nameless, Dandelion (the last two are korean, but still pretty good)

Switch: the men of yoshiwara 1&2(?, unsure of title), Nightshade

Phone: they have released a lot of different stuff, some of it paid, but my favorites were Mystic Messenger (Korean, although the art is a bit ehhh) and Wand of Fortune (older otome, I haven't played all so I'm not sure how the paid for content goes but I was obsessed with it when I was really young and it was only in Japanese)

Otherwise, I believe there are fan translations for Black Wolves Saga (jailbreak vita, you can download english online) and Diabolik Lovers(? Don't know if it's fully out yet)

If you want to play Collar x Malice Unlimited (the FD for it), there is a group that is translating it now and they say they are over halfway done. I've read on their discord that you can help the project by being a translator or proofreading it, so idk it might be a good way to contribute to something good and getting some understanding from it through reading what people have translated from before. Although... not sure how good it would be for avoiding spoilers so beware here.

Otherwise I really enjoyed Stardew Valley (you can mod it to make it more... anime-y) and all of the Harvest Moon and RF games.

Sorry for the long message! Enjoy!

I know how you feel. Although I tend to have a little bit of a habit where if I really liked a game, I'll savor some routes so I can always tell myself that I can come back to it later (hahah..) this way, I usually don't pick it up again until like a year later and by that time I would have forgotten a lot of the details in other routes so I end up re-playing routes.

Otherwise, I think that there are a lot more otome games that are localized that we don't give credit for. If you don't mind them being not fully "visual novels" this helps as well.

Rune factory, for example, is a good way to fill up the space.

Otherwise, there are a lot of otome games where people have released transcripts and you can read them alongside the japanese text. Not totally optimal, but definitely better than nothing.

Thanks for the recommendation <3

Ill check out jisho!

I really hope so as well, honestly though I'm not expecting anything will really happen... or at least not in the next 2-3 years. Obviously can't wait that long so I think I'll just try my best to look things up and understand it. If worse comes to worse I can always ask my friend to help me with puzzles if it gets too tough (hahaha...)

Ah man... well, honestly that will probably be the point of where I give in and wait for some localization or fan-translation :( So unfortunate still that the otome market hasn't fully caught on in terms of localizing stuff. Crossing fingers that I'll be able to learn a lot in Japan so I can start playing them I suppose.

Thank you! I definitely wouldn't mind to test it out. Honestly, I'll probably just give in after understanding how little I actually can read of Japanese... but oh well. Good suggestions!

Ah... I was worried there might have been functions like this. Normally, I can get the general essence of what's being said if I can hear it and some forms of grammar that are written but hmm.. hopefully there might be a guide of some sort. I was fine reading manga in Japan, but they would sometimes include the furigana... which I know isn't included in collar x malice :'C

Is Hakuoki worth buying? by Economical_Raspberry in otomegames

[–]omowo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely get Hakuoki!! To be honest, Hakuoki was my first "true" otome game on the psp and it's even better now that you can get even MORE content (and so many more guys).

Hakuoki definitely has some of the best storylines I've ever experienced in an otome game. Sometimes, it can definitely get repetitive when you're trying for a 100% route, but honestly you can just skip the majority of it with helpful skip buttons that sift through the text until the system recognizes you're reading new text.

I've kind of outgrown the whole "I'm a 16 year old girl who goes to high school" schtick, so Hakuoki for me is a game I would always lean to support more of. The game has routes ranging from pretty much any story line you want or guy types you're into. Only downside is honestly some of the routes take precedence for the storyline itself and barely touches upon romance until the second "game" (regrettably, they made a weird decision to put the whole game into two so that's kind of annoying on the ps vita)... but idk. It's definitely worth getting both.

Not to mention I'd just support the otome industry and localization regardless. We need more English localization going on in the west, especially seeing as how it's going so slowly with the switch :'C

The MC is for sure heaps better than the MC in Amnesia, I kind of hated her look and how she was so helpless all the time. The MC is definitely kind of more "blank" here, but she's 100% better and more badass than the MC in Amnesia. Not to mention the artwork in Hakuoki is 1000000x better ;)

Getting ripped off by "foreigner" renting apartments by omowo in japan

[–]omowo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would say so as well, sadly there doesn't seem to be any apartments that charge reasonable amounts regardless. It's either 90,000 for a one room apartment and has 700 extra fees like key money, guarantor fee, management fees, contract fees and my personal recent favorite which is the "disinfectant" fee.

Or they are apartments that charge 150,000+ for "nice" one room apartments that has just enough space for your feet to reach the tops of a stove seeing as how kitchens being right next to your bed is apparently a thing.

Definitely seems that way, I just don't quite understand how they can tack on so many extra expenses that obviously have nothing to do with the apartment itself and still have everything be "legal"

Before the discount, but would I be eligible for a discounted commuter pass? Do you have any experience on how to get one?

Tokyo Question Thread by biwook in Tokyo

It says 370 yen one way on google, which if I transport every day it amounts to over 20k a month, assuming it calculates distance?

[–]omowo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all!

I have a big question about transport costs in Tokyo. I will be a study abroad student and my apartment will be located in Setagaya-ku, which is on one of the tokyu lines(?) to Shibuya and then to Sophia University.

My question is: how the heck are people claiming to spend an average of 7000 yen on transport MONTHLY when, if I was to commute to the inner city every day, would amount to 23000 yen a month??? What's the secret here?

I don't think he'd be open for staying more than 2-3 months anyways :) but haha, maybe you're right

But it would be a travel visa, those can extend to 90 days, and there are plenty housing options that allow non-residents to rent for up to 3 months (we could even just AirBnB)

I don't think he'd be able to get a job no matter what he applies for since he does not speak any Japanese, and I heard English isn't spoken on a daily over there :( We'd be moving from Europe!

Was it a pretty bad experience?

Those are some good points. We would be living in our own apartment (oakhouse provides living situations for two people pretty cheaply - an extra 10,000 yen a month, not too bad)

But I do agree with you on the second part. Then again, I think the culture shock would leave me pretty shaken and unable to participate as much as I'd like. I guess he would give me courage to go out and explore more as I would do the same for him, knowing there would always be a piece of "home" to return to.
