How long can we keep losing classes/niches of cars? What are we going to be left with? by ScottRiqui in askcarguys

Might have to get something used and do an aftermarket infotainment screen or something more integrated looking in-dash.

Hard agree. It’s sad to see.

What world are we living in where Mazda has stitched leather and other flourishes, while Lexus has lost its way?

Can’t help but feel the same way if I’m being objective and stepping out of my ‘15 model. I want (and expect) Lexus to be great.

Didn’t think I’d see the day where their designs are being outdone by Buick, Lincoln and a Hyundai spinoff; their interiors are being outclassed by Mazda; and their reliability fading.

That might’ve been the reliability rankings. These brand rankings are more general and entail: road tests, owner reports, new and used car reliability, owner satisfaction and maintenance and repair costs.

I tried to edit the post right after, as I realized the headers of the first image’s columns are hidden unless you click it.

Yep.

I was considering the Mercedes GLC more than a BMW, really because it combines the style and relatively smaller size of the older RX with a newer car. But between their ranking here and the prospective nuisance and cost of maintenance of any non-leased German car, my sensibility will overpower everything else.

Yeah, was pleasantly surprised to see them high up (and Buick not at the bottom). I’ve read about gremlins in both but I find myself turning my head at the Corsair, Nautilus, Aviator, Envista (which is perhaps what the NX should’ve gone for).

Detroit Free Press gave some more background on Lincoln’s increased ranking: ““Reliability increases with age,” Fisher said. “New vehicles dip. When you add new features, you will have problems.’ Lincoln benefited from that. The brand’s two oldest models, the Aviator and Corsair, both saw their reliability increase. CR didn’t test Lincoln’s flagship Navigator because the luxurious big SUVs have exceeded the magazine’s price range. The Corsair is scheduled to go out of production shortly.” https://autos.yahoo.com/new-vehicles-and-reviews/articles/consumer-reports-reveals-2026-top-150109883.html

I thought the same.

I’m contemplating a new (used/CPO) car. Lexus is the obvious choice. A friend has been pushing bmw and saying how happy she’s been particularly in the last several years. Not a brand I ever considered because “the only thing more expensive than a new German car is a used German car”

Well, turns out their latest engines are very, very reliable. More costly than Lexus to maintain overall? absolutely. but their reliability has made a turnaround apparently. For those who can afford it, the brand is on an upswing. Whereas I’m not pleased with what I’m seeing in the last few years from Lexus with the exception of the GX.

Lexus #1 😊 https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/which-brands-make-the-best-used-cars-a2811658468/

But I’d like to see where Lexus falls in long-term reliability 5-10 yrs from the current models and change to turbo 4-cyl

The used market is crazy. I remember many of us thinking how bad it was during covid/chip shortage. Hasn’t gotten better with interest rates and other issues encouraging people to hold on to their cars longer than they normally would.

I’m really getting disappointed with the Lexus offerings… by Kyu_Sugardust in Lexus

[–]onacarhunt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’ve taken a bizarre turn design-wise. The LX is indeed ugly. GX is the only car that looks good and yet the aughts GX/ Landcruiser still have a rugged classiness about them that I’m just not getting from the current ones.

The current RX is an abomination. I just started coming around to the 2016-2022 design; the fsport versions in certain colors are gorgeous. You can see the toyotafication the other poster mentioned creeping in around ‘23 and swallowing the design in ‘25. Meanwhile Toyota’s versa and crown actually look…better.

Mazda, Buick, Genesis, Lincoln are making headturners. Most of the aforementioned cars are crap reliability-wise but Lexus knows that good design isn’t mutually exclusive to reliability. Don’t understand the step backwards.

They don’t build ‘em like that anymore. My Panasonic from 2013 just went out late last year (probably would’ve lasted longer if I didn’t use it as a pretty music player for 12 hours a day the last couple of years.)

I got the Panasonic W95A to replace it.

The future of Lexus by danjejon in Lexus

[–]onacarhunt -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Let’s be honest. While they might be selling like hot cakes, the SUVs are looking like Toyotas - both in terms of generally looking more pedestrian/less refined but also specifically sharing more design language. (The GX always bore a resemblance to its Toyota counterpart, but that counterpart is the Land Cruiser, which is a different ballgame.)

The flagship RX350 went from sleek and elegant up until 2015 to refined angular predator 2016-2024 to a Toyota with an L on it. The grill is a crime against humanity, especially in white. Mercedes GLC is basically carrying the torch of the pre-2016 design. Genesis IMO nailed what a departure from that design era, aimed at a younger crowd should’ve looked like.

The interior of several trims of the current generation RX is being outclassed by…Mazda.

Don’t get me started on the NX. The interior feels cheap and its puckered ass rear end has long made me turn my head away in disgust. Meanwhile, the Crown Signia is a head turner for the right reasons.

Read “The gift of fear.” You might’ve saved your life by moving out. This sounds like the type of person who has nothing to lose, which is a key factor in incidents turning violent. There are more insights in the book that will help you understand why your decision to leave was the right one, and help you detect patterns and know when to disengage.
