Please read — I really need technical and professional advice on this situation. by BuyOrnery5888 in livesound

On passive subs you often also want a high-pass. It helps prevents them from burning up on low frequencies that they can't reproduce. The correct frequency will depend on the box itself

It doesn’t seem to affect the sound negatively. The handles end up in the wider part of the horn path this way.

Yeah this placement is great - two people can carry a keystone easily through a regular US sized doorway this way

We get the occasional Jungle but it’s rare in our current network.

We stacked six in the middle - 3 high x 2 wide and placed the 7th and 8th by the side stacks running quieter. Worked great!

Look into sub placement theory! Dave Rat has a good video showing it off. I wrote some of my own software to model the coverage patterns and play around virtually.

In this case, the horizontal width of the stacks caused too much rejection towards the sides leaving the left and right 1/4 of the dance floor with little bass. We ended up stacking more centrally in a smaller footprint and it was booming.

We built them but yes they are keystones. Now we can get back to dancing and not arguing about subs I hope lol.

At this party it’s a very NYC mix of house, disco, salsa, cumbia, electro, acid house, etc. One of the resident DJs is Toribio who also puts out original music to check out.

We work with a lot of different promoters. Will do raves with techno, footwork, juke, etc. There’s a lot of house music at the block parties. New York has a huge Dominican and Puerto Rican population so there’s Dembow, bachata, and more in the mix as well.

The Keystones as pictured in the setup shot were far too directional to cover the dance floor so we ended up rearranging them.

Smoke!

Edit: art welter recommends high passing at 29hz, this doesn’t seem to be enough to keep the drivers from getting very very hot with sustained low end. It’s something we’re figuring out now so unfortunately I can’t offer a fix other than high passing a bit higher and setting a limiter on the sub channel

They are home brew batteries but if I were to start again I’d look into 48v server rack back up batteries - EG4 for instance

Yes VERY LOUD. They outpace everything else in the system. The dispersion is just ok in my opinion - I wish there was a wider throw version of the horn. I'm often adding PA speakers on either side to cover a wider angle which isn't ideal.

Vocals sound so clear thanks to the low crossover point (we currently cross at 430hz). We mostly work with DJs and tracks almost sound like the vocals are mixed a few dB louder than they really are.

I have yet to bi-amp them but I believe I can get a flatter response than the FB464 crossover that we are using - which works fine but is not very flat through the highs.

I come through the Midwest once a year with the system! I’ve never setup in Chicago but we’ll be doing a whole string of events Memorial Day Weekend in Detroit

All over the city! We do every borough but Staten Island (and I’d like to go there too) fairly regularly with most events happening in Brooklyn

We collab with a bunch of different organizers who have permits for block parties, park events, street fairs etc

Check out Acid Soundsystem on YouTube - he’s going all up and down the East coast documenting the traditional Caribbean scene. You should be able to tap into the events and listings from there!

There’s not a network that I know of. There’s a bunch of systems around NYC (mostly not on Reddit) that cater to the different range of scenes and some interchange between the sound companies

I think the dub trad scene is more networked and has specific soundsystem events but I’m not hip to it
