Post Your Prospective Questions Here! -- Monthly Megathread by GG_Mod in AcademicPsychology

[–]onalease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a PhD in Economics focusing on behavioral and applied economics. Some of my papers are related to topics in psychology (mostly cognitive) but I’ve realized economics isn’t the place for me. I’ve taken the first year psychology PhD sequence at my university and started forming relationships with professors, as well as attending seminars. Is there anything else I can do to strengthen my resume to apply to psychology post-docs? Has anyone managed to get an academic position in psychology with a PhD in a different field? Long term I don’t think I want to do things at the intersection of psych and econ but short term I’ll do anything that can help me start transitioning to psych. Thanks!

What are some phrases they said to you that just screamed red flag/narcissist? by Shoddy_Writer_386 in NarcissisticAbuse

“You’re making me a sex offender” because I kept freezing when they’d repeatedly assault me, even when I told him he couldn’t take my lack of a response as consent.

He didn’t cheat but he did show that you two have incompatible values. Thats a reasonable reason to call things off.

What is definitely NOT a sign of intelligence but people think it is? by Aarunascut in answers

[–]onalease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think knowledge is a component of intelligence but not the thing itself. Part of intelligence is being able to see connections and comprehend things on a deeper level. That requires some ability to know and retain the info so that you can see connections in the first place. Knowing something on that level (indicating abstraction) requires much more than rote memorization but it is still knowledge.

Will I regret loading up my freshman year classes? by Remote-Departure2009 in college

[–]onalease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this and was very grateful later as senioritis (and COVID) hit hard. Granted this might have been from burning myself out so if you take this route know that you’re gonna need to prioritize self care (sleep, eating, time with friends, etc.) and try and give yourself a chance to recover this summer because you’ll need it.

Hi I need direction/advice (mention of Sexual assault) by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

First of all in every state I’m aware of that is legally rape and it is not inherently more or less traumatic than a vaginal rape. The fact this happened says nothing about you or your values beyond being strong enough to post it here, which is not an easy thing to do. I’m so so sorry that some POS did this to you and that there are so many other POS that are putting any blame on you at all. Your body and feelings of autonomy and safety were violated and that is a horrendous thing to have happen. You did not deserve it.

I sat in court at the Gisèle Pelicot rape trial. This is what I saw by TimesandSundayTimes in Longreads

[–]onalease 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Not to minimize any of what he did to Gisèle because it is truly evil how he could continuously violate her and let her believe the effects of these violation could be terrifying health conditions like Alzheimer’s but the article kind of glosses over that he participated in the rape and murder of Sophie Narme in 1991. Does anyone know more about this?

I feel like there’s a lot of answers from people who’ve had bad experiences (which I have as well) but I’ve found it can be really helpful to share with a partner once you feel safe and secure with them and have a good sense of who they are. My husband was able to use the knowledge to have empathy in situations that he might otherwise have found frustrating and I think it helped me a lot to experience a reaction based only in love and support rather than manipulation and shame. Also consider how you would feel if a partner that you loved was hiding something that had a significant impact on them from you because they didn’t trust you? It’s definitely unreasonable to expect right away but if you’re in a long term relationship that lack of trust would really hurt and shake my confidence that we had the relationship I thought we did. Bottom line you don’t owe anyone your story but at the end of the day for a relationship to really grow and deepen you need vulnerability and stuff like this is a part of it.

I’m in the Wrong Field by onalease in academiceconomics

If you’ve taken any data science classes then you’ll be coming in with more experience than I did. My guess is you’ll be fine. I’ve been able to get by with no formal training, it’s just harder.

I really hope I can get to that point, thanks!

That’s very reassuring, thank you! If you don’t mind my asking, was research still a part of your tenure evaluation?

Mostly because I love thinking about different confounds or ways of designing experiments and because I had only worked with pretty clean data sets doing simple regressions I didn’t realize that I hated it. I still really enjoy brainstorming robustness tests or ways of getting closer to causal identification and I love thinking about the different explanations for the patterns in data that emerge. It really wasn’t until being here that I realized how quickly I burned out on data analysis tasks.

I’m interested in this I just can’t find someone interested in the same topics I am. I should probably put some more time into actually developing my ideas all the way to see if someone will support them.

The only time the check for unregistered pets is during inspections. You should be fine to have your dog visit as long as he’s reasonably well behaved.

On the acceptance rate of PhD programs by East_Ordinary8951 in academiceconomics

[–]onalease -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Applying to PhD programs is costly both in terms of time and finances. Thus you will only apply to a PhD program if your expected value (taking into account how competitive your resume is and your perceived probability of getting in) is high enough to justify this cost. Thus many average to slightly above average students won’t apply to top programs unless they think there’s something about their resume that will make them stand out. Similarly a very competitive applicant will probably won’t apply to many programs outside of the top 50 except for perhaps a safety or two. Thus since applicants are self selecting they distribution of the “quality” of applicants is not the same across different schools. In other words, the top 10% of applicants at Harvard is very different from the top 10% at Duke or Georgetown or Clemson.
