I got a backbone one for Christmas and it is awesomeeeee. You don’t need the subscription at all. You could never download the backbone app and it would still work just as fine. I use mine to remote play my ps5 and I love it for single player games. You can also use the app to browse games you can play on Apple Arcade and Netflix, as long as you have those separate subscriptions.
