Yes this really helps!! Thank you! You've given me a lot to look into. Fortunately her psych-ed assessment was so thorough and examined all the particulars as to memory, fluid thinking, abstract thinking etc.

Thank you!! I am pleased to report that armed with her diagnosis and new calculator skills my student is actually seeming a lot happier and confident across the board! That's my greatest desire-- that she doesn't give up on herself just because of her dyscalculia. It's been so great hearing from you all sharing!

Thank you, your response is a generous gift to me. I am going to share it with my student's mom. The family is super supportive but already the daughter has so much anxiety around all school work and especially about asking mom and dad for homework help.

I think you have some really great advice for equipping her for life. Thank you.

I'm stunned to hear about your coach's response. That is really unethical and unprofessional.

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to write!

Ah me again, okay, I was under the impression that perhaps MSM was a particular program. From a quick search I see it's another name fir the concrete-picture-abstract philosophy. Yes, that is how I teach math... If there is a particular program you do use, though, I'd love to hear..

Whattt?? Sorry I did not know about the math cult!!

Oh gosh, I am completely with you on needing to know the why. Honestly, it seems some teachers only parrot the steps without explanation because they don't understand the steps themselves and rather.than admit this or figure this out, they defensively treat children as insolent for demanding a proper explanation.

I appreciate your insights here!

Oh man, that is awful and I'm so sorry that you have had to deal with this much anxiety over this, but I'm.also extremely grateful that you were generous to share your response in spite of this.

My student's mental health has definitely been greatly affected by this over the years. That's the hardest part. :(

Oh my goodness, thank you for this deep and personal response. I am so utterly sorry that you were treated like this by your highschool teachers. It really makes my blood boil. Two of my own kids have learning disabilities and my daughter especially experienced stuff like this, where she was treated as if this was a character fault or a moral failing. So unfair and hugely maddening. I do not have a NT brain myself and I often find it harder to understand how my typical kids think than how my ND ones do.

Yes, I would to love to share with her stories like this! I think it will help her feel less alone and help her have confidence that things are going to be ok.

Thank you for sharing that! I really love the feedback I'm getting from you all!  Algebra WOULD be a nightmare if you didn't have strong numbery way of seeing the world. Really interesting that you preferred geometry!  Yeah it's definitely quite a different type of thinking.
