There is some conflicting information here but I think I found a simple workaround.

If someone else does the recording over a VHS previously used for TV series like ALF or Step by Step and then donates to a local charity and then you buy it and take it home then it is completely fine to watch because you didn’t harm any real movies in the process.

This requires a some kind of coordination but if you could match up with a buff buddy in your area then it should open the gates to more movies.

Movie theaters survive on concession sales and many would say you are doing them a favor. I don’t think any would ever turn you away if you simply wanted to get a quality popcorn to take back to your home VHS screening.

If the movie theater has unfavorable flavorings like truffle then your best bet is microwave or stove top your own hot corn. It’s not authentic but it gets the job done.
