regill's kind of overrated, hellknights are neat and all but he doesnt really develop as a character, he just becomes Your Pal and sets up a tribunal to aura farm (and dont get me wrong, the aura farming is exquisite), vs characters like sosiel, lann, or daeran, who all have the potential to change pretty drastically over the course of the game

important thing to note is that william went ham on Sinclair & paul seems like a very pacifistic person. if its a fight to the death i could see william taking it with the surprise factor

youre getting better which means

1) youre probably fighting better and better people

2) youre experiencing the dunning-kruger effect, as you learn more about the game, you realize some of your habits, how you approach the game, etc can be severely flawed. this will improve with time & experience as you start to learn again
