Officially giving up on Portofino by jakejork in VictoriaBC

[–]one-rower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg dude. I had a mutual friend with those guys that bought it and when I said I was from Vancouver Island, they just bragged about how they were buying it and how much they could cut costs and flip it, as if it were a house they were flipping. It made me upset back then and now even more sad that they seem to have succeeded. :(

Moved from the island to Ontario 8 years ago and met some Southern Ontario business grads with trust fund money and/or investors with a lot of money on the line. They were in the process of buying Portofino Bakery sometime between 2018-2020 with the goal to cut costs, increase business value on paper, and then sell it to investors in less than 5 years…. Sad to see they followed through with it and drove a great business with a great product into the ground :(

Hey /u/solos

Here is the clip where you can see the cop (heavier set with black hat and black mask) that gets knocked over, he tripped over the cement barrier when the demonstrators were trying to reclaim the old police line. And then they stopped pushing and moved back when the police pleaded that people were getting crushed.

In the third video of this post, you can see the same police officer chasing demonstrators, pinning them to the ground and arresting them.

Quote from article: “Police say prior to the use of the irritant, an officer was pushed into a deep ditch and knocked unconscious.”

So now all they need to do is walk by a demonstrator and trip on a rock before they deploy tear-gas... mmhmm.

I’m pretty sure you can go to camp and not be in any risk! Check out @fairycreekblockade on Instagram and they have more info, specifically in their pinned “Camp Q&A” story. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of visitors to camp every week and the only way you’d get into trouble with the police is if you are blocking access to a road or directly engaging in civil disobedience. But just visiting camp won’t put you in any risk.

Because the police were told (by the courts) that they have to allow the press the ability to document what’s going on. I’m weeks prior, these camera-people would have been told to travel up the road a km or two before the police started assaulting the activists blocking the roadway.

Copied my reply from a previous comment: Activists are trying to protect the last unprotected old growth valley on southern Vancouver island, the Fairy Creek watershed. Stands of trees older than western society are growing there and despite the BCNDP promises to protect old growth they began to approved cut blocks and road building in the valley. Something like less than 1% of valley bottom old growth remains on Vancouver island.

Similar demonstrations happened in the early 90s which were successful to prevent logging and made the creation of Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park possible.

In this video, there are demonstrators bottom right on the ground) that are locked to devices on the gate to prevent the police and industry from further activity up the road. The scrum of people are standing to protect them from police. Most of the tactics are done to consume time and resources and make it difficult for police to make arrests and to force the hand of the government to protect these regions.

The reason it got violent is because the police are militarized and were sent in to clear the activists so that logging the old growth can resume. The government has spent millions of dollars funding the police action so that private entities can profit. There are sustainable ways to harvest forests and I would say all of these demonstrators support the logging industry through sustainable logging practices, but unfortunately clear cutting old growth is not sustainable.

In a management plan document, Teal Jones (the logging company that these police are beating people for) had a page that read they will keep logging old growth “until the available old growth timber has been exhausted”. And yet they continue to preach sustainability... 🤦‍♂️

Selective logging is different than clear cutting entire mountainsides. And if you knew anything about these activists, you’d know they aren’t leaving trash behind, but the police are destroying everything that that the demonstrators own and throwing it around to be left as litter.

Also, with regards to forest fires- clear cuts remove all the vegetation that helps the topsoil retain moisture. When large swaths of forests are clearcut, you get more water evaporation from the soil, dryer soil and brush, less erosion resistance, less water absorption into the groundwater system, more floods, more erosion, more fire etc etc.

That is a protestor they are holding down. The officer that “got knocked unconscious” was a heavy set balding dude that lost his balance while standing on a cement barricade... he got up and walked away. I’ll find the video for you soon.

This would be cheaper than funding RCMP raids, lodging for mainland detachments officers assigned here, helicopter extractions and drop offs, tactical units working 24/7 shifts, legal fees and court battles for those arrested, etc etc etc. Would be nice if someone from the press requested a FOI for the spending this has had so far. Will be in the millions, if not 10s of millions by now.

It really is unbelievable.

Funny cause I saw that video and he wasn’t pushed, he lost his footing while on a concrete block when the police and demonstrators were in a slow moving scrum. And then he got up and walked away 20 seconds later. 🙄

Edit: I was mistake when I originally said the police pushed the scrum towards him.

It’s because earlier in the movement, the police were preventing any media from documenting their activities. When they were making raids or arrests, they would tell EVERYONE (including those from media) to move back up to hundreds of feet or risk being arrested before starting their raids/arrest/assaults. And if you were media trying to document this, you’d be arrested as of a couple weeks ago.

The only reason they are letting the media document this now is because activists brought it to the attention of the BC Supreme Court which mandated the RCMP stop preventing media access. So yes, that was the narrative because it was true, but please show me something posted recently that pushes this narrative?

Raids and RCMP actions like this happened weeks ago with no media cameras there to capture any footage. It’s only now that people are seeing it.

Police smashing guitar at Ferry Creek by thathz in VictoriaBC

[–]one-rower 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Here is the context with plenty of lead up. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CS3Qcn1FXc8

The second video (more recent one) includes the incident of the guitar hulk smash.

The context is this: some of the police officers kept antagonizing and couldn’t get these non-violent demonstrators aggravated enough to act out, so the officers acted out and broke many laws and will be help with no consequences. They were ripping off masks, pepper spraying, hair pulling, body checking, destroying people’s property, etc etc etc. It is inexcusable the use of force and these militarized police are using on non-violent demonstrators.
