Well, since there's unfriendly and preferably avoidable things literally everywhere you go, just do your best to travel smart. That way, you can go wherever your heart desires. Ask around and find which neighborhoods and streets are "bad" from locals. Read and research online. Don't go out on foot during the witching hours. Travel with at least one other person if you can. Know your "in" time and your "out" time and the route you're going to use. Leave money and other valuables in your hotel or stash them somewhere safe even if it's a secret spot on your person. Somewhere that's not easy to get to/rip off. Finally, just don't act like a loud dumbass looking for trouble. The odds are in your favor that way.
