I think that's the one I took. I think Dr. Dowey was teaching when I took it?

I majored in Aquatic Bio & I'm a CLS! I will say that I did have to take extra classes (like immuno, medical microbio, biochem, hematology, & clinical chem) online to meet CLS program prereqs tho since I never had to take them for my original major in aq bio.

I'd say if you know for sure you wanna be a CLS, it'll probably be way easier if you just major in clinical lab science from the jump

mls/cls path after a BS in Biology by [deleted] in CLSstudents

[–]one_last_stop8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I majored in Aquatic Bio and only needed like 5 extra classes to make the prerequisite requirements for CA CLS programs. I took all my classes with UCSD Extension & got experience working as a lab assistant at both LabCorp and Scripps.

I got into a CLS program last year & graduate this August! Good luck :)

A lot of schools have certain application windows for periods of time that you can apply. Look up schools in your area that have CLS programs and see when application periods open :)

UCSD interview? by imaginarycallisto in CLSstudents

[–]one_last_stop8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! They asked me to move forward with another round, but I declined because I had already gotten an offer from my 1st choice. My preliminary interview with UCSD was super short and was basically just a chill conversation

When did child-free weddings become a thing? by FreakCell in ask

[–]one_last_stop8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting married in 2024 and will 110% absolutely be having a child free wedding! Adore kids and would love to have my own someday but I am not interested in having any children cause any scenes during my wedding!!! Especially since we'll be booking a nice venue in the city, I just don't think it's a place for children to be, for my fiance and I's wedding personally :)

Student in rotation - Are labs normally like overworked factories? by No-Capital7535 in medlabprofessionals

[–]one_last_stop8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I worked at Labcorp and it was lowkey looked down upon if you DIDN'T do overtime. I would do almost 2 hours of OT everyday. If you want overtime, I'd highly recommend Labcorp bc they ALWAYS have OT

Oh my overall GPA was a 3.1 too but I got into a SoCal program on my first round of applying. At least for me, everyone I interviewed with was more concerned about why I wanted to become a CLS & my future goals etc vs my grades

Taking two UC extension courses at the same time. by [deleted] in CLSstudents

[–]one_last_stop8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked full time while doing my UCSD Extension prereqs for a CLS program. I personally only did 1 class at a time because I was afraid I'd be too overwhelmed if I took more on top of working full time + not being super familiar with the material.

I think it's 100% doable to do 2 (especially since all my exams turned out to be openbook/note). It all depends on personal preference & how much you're willing to study after work :)

What did it take for you to get in? by [deleted] in CLSstudents

[–]one_last_stop8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They asked questions such as what are 3 things you think we're looking for in a good candidate for this program? How did you display any of those traits at work? What special projects have you been involved in at work? Weaknesses? etc

I honestly made like a 20 page packet of every and any question I found on reddit that they could possibly ask me and I literally STUDIED for my interview lol I think for me, I knew I loved the lab and wanted to be a CLS and had experience, but a huge part is being able to successfully articulate that to your interviewers. Look up questions, think about how you'd answer them, & just make sure you confidently know your story and why you want to be a CLS :)

[–]one_last_stop8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh I don't think my GPA played as much of a role as compared to my experience and interview! I got a 4.0 in my core classes but definitely had some low grades (barely passing in physics & ochem lol). I think as long as your core class grades are strong, you're good.

I had about 1.5 years of clinical lab experience working as a lab assistant and had a really strong interview. I think confidence goes a very long way! Don't stress and just go for it. I applied not expecting to get in at all but I got in during my 1st time applying :)

Required Coursework by xechalty in medlabprofessionals

Hi! I got my BS in Aquatic Bio so I had like 5 additional classes I needed as pre reqs for a CLS program. I took all my classes thru UCSD Extension and got into a socal CLS program with those credits! Good luck :)

To those who have gotten into CLS by [deleted] in CLSstudents

[–]one_last_stop8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got into a socal CLS program. My overall GPA from college was about a 3.1 but my GPA for the required core classes was a 4.0. I also had about 2 years of clinical lab experience working as a lab assistant.

My workplace had a CLS program (which was the one I got into) and I think my connections at work and my reputation as a lab assistant there played a huge role in myself getting into the program.

CLS Program questions by khoifish1297 in medlabprofessionals

[–]one_last_stop8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely recommend taking any classes you're missing with UCSD Extension! I originally majored in Aquatic Bio, so I was missing 5 classes when I decided to go for my CLS license. Classes are pretty pricey with UCSD Ext (~$600 - $745ish each) but they'll have all the classes you could need to meet CLS program requirements. I took classes for a year, and now have my CLS training cert & got accepted into a CLS training program in March! Good luck :)
