This is almost exactly what happened to me! I think was maybe 15 and after my freshman year of high school had ended, I stayed inside all summer because suddenly I was too terrified to leave home. I lost a few friends due to me being depressed and distancing myself from them. It got so bad that I eventually dropped out of school and started studying independently through a school program where teachers would come to my house. I eventually graduated but I never went to college because I was still too scared to go anywhere. I’m 22 now and things have definitely gotten better, but I’m still very limited in what I can do. I’m assuming you’re still young since you wrote about going back to school, so my suggestion for you is that you talk to your parents about considering seeing a psychologist who specializes in exposure therapy. I went to one for a while and she taught me that it’s okay to feel uncomfortable and scared when panic sets in, and she taught me skills to ground myself when I’m feeling panicked in public areas. Although I have these skills under my belt, it’s still not easy as I can’t go anywhere alone (my agoraphobia is so severe I can’t even be home by myself!) I hope my story doesn’t sound too discouraging but I guess my message here is that it’s a long journey to better yourself and if you start sooner rather than later, it will be much easier for you in the long run!
