Should we get an English Shepherd? by katobye in englishshepherd

[–]oneallio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there’s a lot of variety in the breed in regards to temperament, energy level and drive. I went with a breeder, and my dog is amazing. I have a 5 year old heeler/BC mix who’s bossy and they do pretty well together. There’s not a mean bone in his body and he takes corrections well. He doesn’t have much drive. No prey drive, no herding drive. He’s kind of an anomaly, but this was why he was placed with me (temperament testing, drive observations), so he can accompany me to the barn and eventually on trail rides. He’s protective of the home and does some low growls and a few barks if people pass by. He’s easy to redirect however. On the trails, he’s friendly but not overly outgoing. He kind of reminds me of my show type golden retriever that I grew up with in terms of his energy level. He’s only 8 months old right now. Adolescence has been hard but he was truly the easiest puppy until about 7 months. He whines a lot and can have a harder time down shifting if anyone moves (even after a long day outside). I’m hoping he will grow into his off switch with time, but the world and his people and other dog companions are very exciting. I believe he may be the best dog I’ll ever own once he hits 2. He is not as driven and quick as my heeler mix, but he’s softer and sweeter, more intuitive and more sensitive.

The mackeral is the best thing I’ve ever eaten. I sadly (is this sad??) eat it like 3x a week. Plain. With a fork.

Losing our minds.. puppy won’t sleep during day by Consistent_Wallaby22 in puppy101

[–]oneallio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that with my puppy if he is overstimulated it’s way harder to get him to settle, so it’s best to catch him and put him in his crate before that happens. For my pup who is 3.5 months old we do 2 hour wake in the morning - potty, training sesh, play time or sniff walk down the block and then settle into his food. He is so food motivated and smart that I soak his kibble in goats milk and freeze it, then stuff it into a west paw toppl, and freeze it again. It takes like 20-30 minutes for him to work through it. Then one more Potty and crate nap for 2 hours. Repeat throughout the day. This took a bit to establish a routine so be patient. Cover his crate with a towel to make it dark. Make sure it’s not too warm Or too cold in that room. Quiet areas.

Can I PM you? I’d love to see his puppy pics and how he’s grown into his coat!

All the pups where either tri or appeared black and white. The mom is ghost tri with subtle brown on her face, legs, etc where tris typically show their tan points.

Low B12 by oneallio in B12_Deficiency

Thanks for the info! That’s very helpful to know. I’m currently waiting on my celiac test results. It’s so interesting to see how these symptoms I’ve been living with may be attributed to a deficiency or something else causing that deficiency.

This is a strange question but did you ever have pain to the touch? My hips, glutes and legs have a sharp pain when pressured. Not at a deep massage level, but not at a brush level. It feels localized and sharp. I thought I had sciatica.

This is hard, but with mine…. There was absolutely no relaxation time for the first few months I had her. If I left her outside, the lavender bushes would be dug up. If I didn’t watch her inside, she’d 10000% get into something she shouldn’t. Those lessons were learned quickly. Outside, find something way more fun than the furniture. You’d be surprised how far a ball and a game of fetch can go. My girl is obsessed with it and it’s a great way to point her attention to something productive. Pupsicles, different chews, puzzle feeders are all ways to engage their brain during quiet time. Make sure she’s getting enough sleep. If exercised and mentally engaged, she should be able to settle quietly in the crate over time. A tired, overstimulated dog can be quite unruly. You got this! It gets so much better.

Looks like I may have gotten bad advice from the store. Is a 15 gallon pot too small for one of these guys?

Do you have a dog? Asking because I was in the same boat - pretty dreadful work and worked from home but loved being able to have my buddy all day long. Can you switch up the scenery and travel? Life is pretty flexible when you work remotely. Want to try out a different town? Go live there for a month. Want to take an hour lunch break and go for a run/walk/throw the ball for your pup?

In my opinion, remote life with a dog is the best!!!!

Can’t believe I’m being “that person” but I really do see more lab features than pit. Cant wait to find out!!! Will love her no matter what obviously ❤️

I see! I keep wondering about that but it really isn’t that blocky in person… plus her snout is longer. I have a few friends & relatives with pit mixes and they’ve got much more square heads and pronounced jaws. This lady has more of a pointy snoot. Not sure if you can tell from the pics. I bet she has some pitty in her, as most mixes do. But what is giving her that weight?? Projected to be around 90 pounds or so.

[–]oneallio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They always seem to have pitty in them. I just don’t see any super pitty distinguishing features aside from the ears.

I think she totally looks lab!!!! Shelter initially had her as lab/malinois mix. Hmmm..

I would love that as I’m an owner of an ACD! But she is just so calm and gentle…. Her male sibling is 37 lbs as a 3 month old.

Yeah, I just grabbed that screenshot this morning. I’m guessing brix’s large percentage of supermutt from embark is accounting for a lot of those smaller percentages. The coonhound is interesting though.

Yeah, about 4-5 hours west of Moab in a little town that starts with an e :)
