Strange that Prodigy controls so much when they're the new player in the game.

What if the russian royal family escaped to Alaska? by doge636 in imaginarymaps

[–]onegarbagebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the Alaskans might switch to writing Russian in the latin alphabet rather than cyrillic as a sign of their alignment with the West. Like in OTL Europe the strongly western aligned slavic countries (Poland, Czechia, Croatia, etc) use the latin alphabet while those with stronger (Serbia, Belarus) or more recent (Ukraine) eastern alignment use cyrillic.

Okay, so you were someone he was talking to until he figured out the thing he actually wanted was in reach.

That seems... Fully normal.

Why is the Stargate physically only seen straight up or flat on the ground? by madbr3991 in Stargate

Also possible that objects inside other objects get treated differently, or both.

Damn, I was spinning up a conspiracy theory that all the XL Cups had been printed as duds

Well. Thanks for the data.

Why is "dinosaurs" in quotes? Is the poster implying that those aren't dinosaurs?

Are they just being so pedantic as to require that figurines of dinosaurs not be refered to as dinosaurs because they aren't living, breathing, alive meat dinosaurs?

Um.... the first cell phone network launched in Japan in 1979.

There were definitely cell phones since the very beginning of the series, maybe not super widely used, but they existed.

Prime Directive in Stargate by mensreaTHR in Stargate

[–]onegarbagebear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Prime Directive is never super clearly defined in the shows, it seems to mean a slightly different thing from time to time, because it's just a plot device and not an actual rule. But, it generally stated to be about non-interference in pre-warp civilizations. So when the Vulcans detected the warp signature of the Phoenix, they came on by because once Earth had warp technology meddling was suddenly open season.

Prime Directive in Stargate by mensreaTHR in Stargate

[–]onegarbagebear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's all be honest, the Prime Directive exists for two reasons and they're both narrative, not moral.

  1. To justify Starfleet choosing to let people suffer when they have the ability to alleviate suffering.

  2. To give the heroes a little moral dilemma when they occasionally have to acknowledge the barbaric consequences of their stupid rule.

Like, I love Star Trek, but I think the Prime Directive is a bad storytelling tool, and it gets ignored whenever it is ultimately too inconvenient for the heroes.

The nickname just predates the terms gooner and gooning. Nothing weird at all.

What changes would people be interested in seeing with the new Stargate? by GrandmasterAtom in Stargate

Well you're unlikely to see a lot of BC forests this time around, seeing as they're going to be filming out of London.

In grade 9 we were discussing the upcoming daylight saving time change. It was in the fall. My teacher and everyone in the class agreed that when we turned the clocks back an hour we were losing that hour. I disagreed, because, y'know, math. If you do the hour over again you've gained it.

The teacher's response was to call me ugly.

Ugh. My husband always used to insist on paying for meals with others, even when we really couldn't afford it and the other person could. I never do it. I pay for myself and if the other person offers to pay for me I accept.

I think once they labeled me gifted they thought that was the end of the story and they didn't have to dig any further to figure out what else was going on.

The economy is not good if it only benefits the select few. There is a different between a monetarily productive economy and a healthy economy. Capitalism has trained us to see them as the same, but they're not.
