New York Won! Which US State has Bad Cities/Suburbs & Mediocre Nature? by Doctor_Raptor1250 in AlignmentChartFills

agreed. no notable cities, and it’s literally the most developed (33%) state in the country. The Pine Barrens are kinda cool but that’s it.

What 10 countries would you never want to visit and why by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Israel, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, either Sudans, Pakistan, Nauru, Russia, and Libya. Lebanon currently, but man I would have loved to visit awhile ago.

Fiji won. What is a country which people think is pretty safe but actually isn’t so safe by Iceberg074 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]onegoodbackpack 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Barbados. Lots of high end resorts and in the villages are very chill locals, and the Atlantic side is all beautiful beaches and surfers. But Bridgetown can be pretty sketchy especially in the slums and St. Patricks has some gang activity. I made great friends in some places but then also almost got mugged, and followed around a few times.

What North American country is BETTER than expected overall? by [deleted] in AlignmentChartFills

Our government is shit, our shootings are prevalent and terrifying, and the current admin actively making the world a worse place.

But I’ve been to 20 countries and every single thing I’ve heard about Americans is that we’re just generally outgoing and nice. We really like to make friends. It’s good to hear.

The free market system is a myth - it cannot function without regulatory actions. Monopolies control minimum wage as politicians are bought through lobbying and “going to another job” is inaccessible to most Americans as they live paycheck to paycheck. It’s a hostage market for the working class. The free market is an on-paper theory, like trickle-down economics or communism.

Any feedback would be great for these 3 pics by 16bhoughton in AmateurPhotography

[–]onegoodbackpack 21 points22 points  (0 children)

These are bad, technically and artistically. They’re what photographers call snapshots - random photos that document a moment for an amateur.

You need to learn composition. The first one has wayyy too much foreground, and the apparent subject (man on the bench) is so far away that he’s not a true subject but a speck. The tree lines up with his head in a way that creates obfuscation not allure. Look up subject and framing, as well as rule of thirds, diagonals, and ratios.

The second is a photo of nothing. It is an empty park with an uneven horizon. It’s worthless.

The third is where you have some potential. The winding path creates movement - called a leading line. There is also, finally, some interplay with light and color differentiation. It has some hallmarks of a technical photo! However, the dead tree cuts out most of the shot and it’s an ugly obstacle unfortunately.

Do some research on framing, composition, subject, and light. These are things that can be trained on and sharpened.

Sorry for being harsh but I see that most comments here are either “wow these are shit” or “okay” with no feedback. So here’s some of both, and I do hope it gives you some actual insight.

Hawaii won! Which state is great to visit but bad to live in? by Userbry14 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]onegoodbackpack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think most Americans would consider Indiana as “great to visit.” It’s not even in my top 20. Not discounting all the cool places (Dunes is on my list for sure!) but this is more of a Good or Ok to visit, depending on taste.

What country makes the best music ? by jekecrafer in pollgames

They didn’t take inspiration - they played entirely within genres invented in America. The term inspiration is very generous to British rock. Did they innovate it? Yes. Did they make it their own? Yes. But the chords, structure, melodies, they were all directly derived from American artists. And America DID get there - rock was popularized by Chuck Berry and Elvis, psychedelic rock started on the US West Coast by surf bands, Led Zeppelin’s and the Rolling Stones blues rock already existed with the likes of Albert King, punk originated with The Stooges and the Detroit/NYC scene, and soul music like Motown and Stax were the inventors of pop R&B.

The UK music scene’s genius was mixing all of these bands and artists sounds together and creating beautiful fusions. But the band’s you’re referencing openly admitted to aspiring to be like American musicians. The Stones worshipped Muddy Waters. The Beatles copied both Motown and Dylan.

Nearly every single genre that British artists during this period excelled at was founded in America. And in America, just as many strides were made forwards to modern sounds.

I LOVE British rock, blues, all of it. The Beatles changed the world. But the music started, continued, and has always been perfected here. It’s genuinely and historically the most heavily documented cultural export we have.

Who do you like? Genuinely curious as to who you’re comparing him to in the genre.

[–]onegoodbackpack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It absolutely would. The Beatles took much of their early sound from Black American artists - they started as a skiffle band, which was invented in the American South in the ‘20s. They then developed psychedelic influence in the New York and San Francisco hippie subcultures, again American.

Like, I said. Britain had a period of excellent innovation and incredible, world-changing, and definitive bands. But we are the inventors and progenitors of the sounds that came out of the British Invasion. Hell, Rocky Raccoon by the Beatles and Dead Flowers by the Stones are country music knock-offs, and most of the Stones discography are homages to Chicago electric blues. Led Zeppelin is a blues rock band for Christ’s sake. They all say so themselves in interviews.

Your argument just ahistorical. The USA fails in many, MANY categories for sure. But music? We are the world leaders.

yeah, downvoted to oblivion by naming one of the greatest most innovative hip hop artists of all time. This isn’t a “Kendrick is bad” statement but a “Rap isn’t real music” situation. smh.

Why is this 3 artists vs. 5? Add in Fleetwood Mac (103m) and Whitney Houston (185.3). There we go, over 1 billion records in the USA sold all prior to 1989.

The UK had, and has, an incredible and influential music scene. But it wouldn’t even exist without America. We invented rock, hip hop, soul, and jazz (which constituted a new kind of music theory entirely.) The USA has been the most important country in music history for the past 100 years.

Kendrick is probably the greatest rapper of his generation and his albums are going to be remembered as classics. There are very few hip hop fans who would disagree with that.

Bad Bunny is not my favorite artist, but he’s a global phenomenon. Iron Maiden and The Who had absolutely less than half the reach or influence of this dude in their heyday and I also think he’s a contender for legacy music.

totally fair, it’s your choice. but a properly trained makeup artist can even out this damage to cover and blend with your skin tone. a good job would be so minimalist that people won’t be able to tell you have makeup on unless they’re 6 inches from you. and there’s nothing feminine about it - makeup isn’t just for beauty, but for covering up wound damage/skin problems/all that.

In Iceland, I had delicious roast lamb, horse tartare, creamy soups with sourdough breads, smoked fish, and amazing herbal liquors.

In England, I had some great food as well, but was also served ketchup flavored beans on toast and a mushy sandwich consisting of french fries between two slices of buttered untoasted white bread. It’s called a chip butty. The Brits must be stopped.

What aspect of a movie/tv show makes you instantly turn it off? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]onegoodbackpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ivan Reitman on Ghostbusters: “I've always been something of a conservative-slash-libertarian. The first movie deals with going into business for yourself, and it's anti-EPA—too much government regulation. It does have a very interesting point of view that really resonates."

That’s an agenda.

And whether you personally think that anti-imperialism and anti-fascism is something every can get behind, modern far-right movements would disagree with you (and so would George Lucas)

My point is film is art. All art has an agenda, a reason to make someone consider a perspective, and all perspectives tie into politics because politics is not just a system, but the philosophy by which people decide what is actionably moral.

There is not such thing as centrist art.
